Midnight Whisperings.
No one could have guessed that the apocalypse would have been silent. But it was, right this second in the instant that they were all living. In that small tent that they shared, barely space for both of them and they still made it work somehow. Maybe the sky was trembling with dark clouds and the air was humid and smelt like iron. Silence still reigned.
Lucas had tried to convince her to stay up there, with their parents. But Max didn't listen to him. "Of course I'm not staying here, I'm going" and with a defeated sigh Lucas could only nod and accept it.
Everyone else had already gone to sleep, or at least that’s what they could guess as the only thing that could be heard was the rustling of the ground beneath them both as they moved to a position in which they both could see the hole that was in their tent, the reddish night sky peeking through it, not a star in sight just clouds and more darkness.
“Will we ever not have to be here?” The question was not directed towards Max specifically, maybe to the world, the world they were in now at least.
“We have defeated things like this in the past, most probably we’ll be able to do it again” she sighed her answer, she couldn’t speak with certainty even if she was quite stubborn, but she knew first-hand that it wouldn’t be easy for a group of teenagers to defeat an outer-worldly creature that is out for them specifically.
“Most probably” he turned his head to her even if she was still focused on the sky.
“You know I can’t assure you a single thing.”
“I’m not blaming that one on you, you’ve suffered enough to tell me that we are able to do it just ourselves.”
“Right” Max breathed out, turning her head and finding her nose touching his, her breathing getting a little caught up and down to a minimum.
Their eyes were looking into each other’s, mouths agape breathing the cold air of the night as they tried to keep warm without making things worse for them. The apocalypse wasn’t somewhere they could explore whatever feelings they had even if everyone around them insisted that they do, Dustin had even told them to “find a little happiness in this mess”.
But there was too much to talk about when it came to them, even if it was obvious what would happen in the end. The longing glances and the small “accidental hand touches”, the way that when they were in danger they were only looking if the other was fine and the rest came in second, it was obvious that they knew too, neither of them was stupid, they have never been even if he was all too oblivious for some time, and she tried to ignore it for some other.
The apocalypse was too quiet to say something that should be said out loud or that was what Lucas thought. On the contrary, the grumbling clouds were too loud for Lucas to hear what Max felt.

He observed her movements, and he saw her arm and how her nails scratched at it, he always used to stop her, and the urge in his muscles to just move to her and do it was strong. But he didn't move, he didn't think it was appropriate] I know it still hurts, and I should have realized before saying it. But I did and fucked up the only thing that kept me from drowning [you]. And I didn't want to fuck it up [us]. I would do anything to take it back, but I can't and I still [love you]… I still think about it practically every day.
Napkins and Promises.
It hadn't been long since Will started noticing that he would need more money for the supplies that his classes required than he already had in mind. That's why as soon as he saw a "We're hiring" sign in the coffee shop that he frequented with his friends, he decided to go in for an interview and an immediate hire.
His new boss was nice enough giving him good hours so that he could still study and work on his class projects. Maybe he couldn't spend as much time with his friends as he wanted, but that was fixed when Dustin suggested that they make the café their hanging out spot so that they at least could be close to Will, even if he couldn't stop and actually talk to them it was nice knowing that they were there. The other plus that Max commented on is that they all gave Will honest reviews on his coffee making skills. Because they could all agree that the coffee wasn't the best. Maybe that's why they mostly stuck to hot chocolates, milkshakes, or warm tea.
But Will did some research of his own on the matter, also stumbling upon a suggestion that he didn't hesitate on making to his boss, pastries to accompany the clientele's drinks, becasue sure they had those simple glazed donuts and some croissants that were a little bit dry that worked just fine when they were drowned in coffee, but maybe some cookies, or even those little butter pastries with jam on them could be a good idea.
The first day that the pastries were presented on the café it was late in the evening, a few people sat in the cozy spaces that the coffee shop offered, one of them being Will's best friend, Mike Wheeler.
Mike was too busy to notice that he hadn't ordered anything, and Will knew all of his attention was put into his final project for his Creative Writing class, that he was putting all of his efforts in as he had told week some days prior, he was mixing genres here and there and maybe he was also using some of their personal and disturbing experiences to make it the little bit more interesting.
That's why Will made a warm latte, and he put three of those strawberry jam pastries on a plate, bringing them to Mike's table. Mike didn't even seem to notice, his back hunched over, and his face almost entering his laptop screen, writing away and unbothered by any sound as he had his headphones on. Five minutes later, Will brought a stack of napkins to him and he actually got his face up from his screen, giving Will a smile and mouthing a "thanks" before diving into the food that had been brought to him.
Mike devoured the pastries in seconds, crumbs left on the table and on his thick maroon sweater, he took one of the napkins with raised eyebrows as he noticed the blue ink on them "Stop hunching your back and get on your feet, you've been sitting for way too long. -W". And he actually rose from the cushioned chair he had been sitting on for two hours. His legs were grateul for him as he walked to the counter, empty plate in hand and headphones sitting comfortably on his neck.
He patiently waited for Will to finish serving the coffee to a nice old lady that looked like a teacher. A smile receiving his friend, widening as he looked at the empty plate that Mike carried.
"Are you back for more?" Will asked, a small chuckle leaving his lips as he took some more of them from the metal rack, putting them carefully in the plate.
Mike hummed as he looked down at the plate, devouring the pastries with his eyes, suddenly flinching when the door opened and a cold gust of air entered the shop as a client left.
"You should be leaving soon. It's getting colder now that the sun is already down". the brunnette suggested signaling through the door.
"Yeah, you're right," Mike shrugged his shoulders. "I just concentrate a lot more in here, way cozier than the dorm room with Lucas and Max doing homework together," he sighed a little annoyed.
"Understandable, Dustin and Suzie won't ever shut up when on a video call... even if they're just playing games. " Will rolled his eyes, still smiling.
"I'll finish these up whilst I pray for our living situation to get better" the ravenette joked as he went back to his seat after Will nodded, getting back to cleaning his working space as closing up time approached in big strides.
Mike thought about how it would be so much better if Will and him shared a room, and Lucas and Dustin shared another one, so much better for everyone. Maybe next year he could suggest that switch to his friends, although he wasn’t sure if Will would want to share a room with him even if he had just complained to him about Dustin. He shook his head as he quickly stuffed his mouth with pastries, downing them with the last sip of coffee that was left in his mug.
He started to collect his things, looking at the counter to wave Will goodbye, but not seeing him anywhere. He supposed that he was inside the kitchen washing the dishes. So Mike decided to take his fountain pen and leave a note in a napkin as Will had done before with him.
Fifteen minutes and wrinkled hands later, Will had finished washing the dishes of the day, ready to clean the tables and close off for the day he started where Mike was sat at, right by the window, seeing as there was a napkin left he took it to throw it away and before he could he saw the blotchy black ink on it in what he recognized as Mike's handwriting.
"I'll be back tomorrow, thank you.
P.S. The pastries were delicious, and the coffee was way better today -Mike".
He kept the napkin as he hoped that it would work as a promise between them.

No thoughts, just Heavy Hopes by @byeler.
It was such a beautiful read. I even cried because of that freaking moment in the fifth chapter and I would do it again.
give it time.
m. mayfield
The volume of her Walkman had been turned up to the maximum as she skated home, Kate Bush successfully masking the sound of the world around her. Her expression was scrunched up, eyes stinging though the tears didn’f fall, stubborn. Her hair blew behind her in the wind, winter air cold and stinging against her flushed cheeks. A weight was pressed against her chest, heavy and aching. She thought she would have felt better.
Give it time, she tried to remind herself. It was for the better.
The it in question was something that she had deliberated over for a long while. The thought had occurred to her approximately two weeks ago, as she laid in her bed, sleepless. It hadn’t been long since she and her mom had moved into the trailer, and the four walls that were labelled her bedroom felt nothing like it. As Max stared up at the ceiling, eyes glassy and mind swirling with the same memory that it did every night, the thought came to her.
Would it make it easier for him if he didn’t have to deal with me?
Max was not unaware of how much of a burden she had become to everyone in her life over the span of the past six months. Her mom had been pushing for her to see the school’s therapist, but she had not yet given in. She said she was worried for her health – that her clothes fit looser than they used to and she always had bags under her eyes. Max ignored it. Days spent lounging in the Wheeler’s basement turned into three pairs of worried eyes constantly on her when they thought she wasn’t looking. El, whose letters she had stopped returning for a few weeks now, was writing increasingly worried notes. And Lucas…
Max bit down harshly on her lip when the first tear escaped her waterline, getting blown down her face by the wind as she sped up her skating.
I don’t think we should be together anymore, is what she had eventually settled on to say to him. And as much as Max knew it was for the better, because they would all be better off without her around to bother them, she couldn’t get the memory of his heartbroken face out of her head. The sadness and pure worry that had crossed his expression as soon as the words left her mouth. And maybe he was sad now, and it hurt her to hurt him, but eventually he would be fine. Lucas was going to find someone better – someone happier, easier to deal with – and he would forget all about Max and her stupid issues.
Maybe they would move back to California some day. Hawkins had nothing for them anymore, and maybe it would be better that way. Maybe it would be better for everyone.
The wheel of her skateboard hit a pothole and jerked her off of it, sending her falling to the hard concrete floor. Her hands reached out to catch herself and immediately scratched on the floor. Her Walkman and headphones were sent tumbling and smashing into the floor along with herself. With stinging hands and knees Max sat up, stayed there for a beat of silence, before she burst into tears. The Walkman, now smashed into little pieces, was thrown across the pavement in a blind anger, head tipping back with an angry shout.
Rain started falling ahead, cold droplets falling onto her face, mixing with her tears.
Give it time, she tried to remind herself. It was for the better.

Softest Leaves.
Hawkins, fall 1987.
It was virtually impossible not to look around as his friends played around with the fallen leaves. Running around, throwing leaves up in the air and to each other. And Mike had decided too early on the evening that the activity was too childish. Something in his brain told him that he needed to say it, but later on, as he heard the laughter sitting on a bench next to everyone's backpacks he regretted his choice of words. He knew that his friends would say something to him like: "Isn't this too childish for you?" or "Aren't you too much of a grown up?" but then again they would let it go.
That's why he decided to take a handful of dried leaves in his hands, throwing them over Lucas' head, all of his friends looking at him with surprised smiles on, Dustin being the first one to crack and laugh at the situation, at Mike's waiting face and Lucas' faux-offended expression. Lucas throwing himself over Mike, both of them falling to the ground in between laughs and being welcomed by the soft cushion of warm oranges and browns. They let go off each other quickly, Max threatening them with another round of leaves to be thrown at them as they were helpless in the ground. Mike's lanky limbs quickly getting him up and hiding behind Will, holding his shoulders.
"Am I that great of a human shield?" said the hazelnut haired boy letting out a laugh as he looked back at Mike. Mike could only shrug his shoulders a smile on his face as he looked everywhere for possible "attacks". That's when he heard it: "I got you" a whisper followed by leaves and dirt falling on both of their heads, looking back at the culprit as they tried to shake off what had been thrown down at them, encountering El's smiling face behind them, some giggles sprouting out of her mouth as she ran out of their reach.
Mike turned around as he noticed Will's fingers picking things from his hair, the other boy putting a hand to his shoulder.
"Don't move" and he didn't, lowering himself a bit so that Will could reach better and get most of the dirt out of his hair, making a mental note to do the same to the other boy whenever he finished.
"Okay, turn around" Mike followed, his friends coming back into view. Will, coming back into view. With delicate fingers he shook what was left on Mike's bangs as Mike smiled softly at him, all of his features softening for Will. As soft as the leaves which he had fallen on previously, and he wouldn't recognize it, not yet at least. His feelings had become clearer with time, a year had passed and he realized that maybe that sinking feeling in his stomach he got with Will wasn't a "best bud" thing, because it wasn't. And maybe it helped that Will had opened up to them that same spring about the fact that he did not like girls at all.
Feelings were still confusing to Mike, as confusing as a fall cloudy sky, but they brought a fresh feeling to his heart, even if he and El had a great friendship "no hard feelings", as she also wanted to discover who she was out of the whole mess. It turned out for the better on a lot of aspects.
He looked into Will's eyes, they could be easily compared to the moss that lays on top of the tree trunks, focused now on his own eyes, as the corners wrinkled with a smile.
Gazes were soon split apart thanks to Dustin throwing them both to the ground, as they fell on each other they laughed. Sharing thoughts that went along the same lines: "I could get used to this closeness."
A Bubble of Light.
Hawkins, summer of 1987.
After a year of indescribable suffering, everyone was ready to have some peace and quiet and to live their teenage years that they had lost because of things that weren't easy to imagine as real.
June couldn’t come earlier for everyone, especially for Robin. She had decided to keep on working so that she could do as she said, "Some shit with her life, maybe even go crazy and study a university degree." And it wasn't a crazy idea for her. It was what she actually wanted. The idea became more real every time she talked to Nancy Wheeler. Because that is something that she did more and more after 1986. They became friends, as in official friends, and Robin couldn’t be happier about it. Nancy was the one who brought her back to Earth about everything, even when she had to bring herself back as well.
Robin took the time and put in the effort to pay her back in some way. Whether that was spending time with her or leaving her alone, because she had discovered many things about Wheeler, and one of them was that she needed to be accompanied and alone both at the same time.
Company and silence, one Robin was good at, the latter...not so much. But she learnt silence, she learnt small silences with few comments, or silence filled with a small melody playing from the speakers in Nancy's room. Silence with fleeting touches of comfort, ones that Robin tried so hard not to think about, only to later find herself sprawled out in her own bed, Blondie playing in her Walkman, and her fingers caressing that part of her arm where Nancy had touched her, mouth slightly agape as she thought about everything and nothing at the same time.
That's how it was with Robin. You got everything and nothing at the same time, although for Nancy, it felt like everything all the time. She gave so much of herself, and Nancy had learnt to give something back in return, telling her some random anecdote that had happened to her either in the past few days or when she was ten. Sharing had started becoming easier for her, and sometimes she joined Robin in her everlasting rambles about nothing in particular because she secretly loved it, the journalist in her was amazed to have her mind opened to so many different concepts such as... Spontaneous Human Combustion? Just because Robin had read about it in some article in an odd magazine.
They had started to take their conversations to the outside, the heat becoming unbearable in both of their houses as they could only talk with a closed door as the topics varied every five minutes.
That day, June sixth, they left Robin's house around seven in the evening, the sun slowly making its way down, but the heat it gave off still stuck to their bodies. The forest was their objective, and they walked both in summer dresses taken out from Nancy's closet as she had insisted that Robin would be grateful for any breeze she could get.
The soft rays of sun filtered through the leaves as they arrived at their destination, though they didn't stop walking, they wandered mindlessly one beside the other, their skin sticky and their eyes bright. Nancy's eyes scrunched up as she smiled at Robin's impossible hand gestures as she was telling her about some Neurolinguistics theory that explained language acquisition, and they had started talking about how Mike was the tiniest baby that Nancy had ever seen.
Nancy bent down as she started seeing patches of yellow flowers and white fluffy dandelions, collecting some and passing them to Robin who really didn't seem to notice as she took the various plants with her hand, gently. Soon enough, Nancy made a comment about the flowers as Robin decided to quiet down for a second, "needing to breathe in the fresh air." And Robin laughed as she looked at the brunette, of course she had noticed about her putting flowers, but she had thought they were small presents, to which Nancy had replied with an "of course" and a light chuckle from her lips.
Of course, they were little presents, a thank you for making her go back to her teenage years, even if they were already on their twenties. For making her feel those very typical teenage butterflies that she would not admit as they flown around her stomach in the most agitated manner with just some fluttering of Robin's eyelashes, even if it's what she did every time she blinked. It just felt special. It just felt like a breeze of warm summer air filled with crinkled grass under their bare feet, eye wrinkles as the corners of their lips lifted in smiles, and their mouths opening to let out laughs.
They felt like a summer breeze, carefree and back to what they should have had some years ago, though it wouldn't have been the same, Nancy thought. Some years ago, given things had been normal, it wouldn't have been Robin taking her hand as she decided to run through the trees.
Introduction.
Hi! It's Liz and you might know me from @aurumbelis (heads up that's a +18 blog!).
I wanted to separate my works because, well. Look at this aesthetic and tell me if it doesn't suit fluffier content?
Anyways, about me... I'm 19, I go by she/they pretty please and I love daisies If you haven't noticed already (Yes I do also love Maya Hawke).
In this blog you'll find as I said before, no smut. Just fluff, and some angst, maybe hurt/comfort, you know the goods. All taken with a lense of gold if you will.
Requests and ideas are very welcome, so are collaborations and a message to my dms if you just want to say hello <3!
