A little bump in the road on our puppy journey. The Doberman breeding we were waiting on failed, so no summer puppies for us. We are definitely bummed because we really loved that specific pairing, but hope is not lost! The breeder has another litter planned for this fall. It’s a different pair than we originally hoped for, but we are staying optimistic.
To keep the excitement going, we are actually heading to an AKC dog show this weekend! It will be the perfect chance to introduce my husband and toddler to Dobermans, since they’ve never had one before. We can’t wait to see the breed in action. For now, we’re just focusing on saving money to give her the best life possible.
Torvi does not have the ability to pace herself. Insane puppy. She makes hikes fun/interesting though. (Lilith was also with us, but she was acting like a sane, normal dog.)

They do not hate baths as much as the photos imply, and they are so silky afterward. Until they inevitably go roll around in the yard like idiots.

Ch Tavey's Stormy Objective : Dobermann Dog World Annual 1962
Went to the lake today, took my camera with me. I don’t use it often, I think I’ll have to change that.
that’s my boi 😍🥰
Reuben is starting an introductory scent work class! I kind of feel silly enrolling a 9-year-old dog in a new sport, but I figure it’s never too late to let him do what he was born to do.
Having Reuben and another dog the same age (9 YO) has made me a much better dog owner. It’s taught me that every dog is an individual with different strengths, personalities, and needs. Looking back, I realize how much I’ve learned because of him.
While Reuben may be getting older, we’re both still learning and growing together. I’m excited to give him something that challenges his mind, lets him use his incredible nose, and, most importantly, gives us another opportunity to enjoy this stage of life together (less activity). Here’s to our next adventure.
Rueben just made nine. Time has flown.

“Dobermans have actually gone backward in their breed because they are now just pets they are rarely used a protection dogs which was their original purpose their breed has been watered down now a herding breed can out preform Dobermans in the job Dobermans were bred for.“
Herding v.s Working- misconceptions
Imagine dog breeds as specialized athletes. The Working Group (which includes the Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, and Boxer) and the Herding Group (like the German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois) were built for completely different sports. Working dogs were originally created to be bodyguards, watchdogs, and heavy lifters. They have a natural instinct to protect a specific person or property, and they are wired to stand their ground against a threat. Herding dogs, on the other hand, were created to control livestock. Their brains are wired around a "chase instinct." Instead of guarding a fixed spot, they spent centuries running miles a day, using precise movements to herd sheep and cattle.
Today, many dog trainers argue that herding breeds have actually become better at protection work than Dobermans. There is a good reason for this. Because herding sheep requires endless energy, breeds like the Belgian Malinois have a relentless, high-speed work ethic. They are also incredibly easy to train because they spent generations listening to farmers from across large fields. On top of that, herding dogs are mentally tough; they were bred to work through freezing rain and harsh terrain. Meanwhile, over the last few decades, the Doberman has mostly been bred to be a handsome show dog or a gentle family pet, which has accidentally watered down their original protective instincts.
However, there is a big difference between a flashing sports competition and real-life personal defense. A herding dog excels at chasing down a running target at top speed. But that is not what the Doberman was made for. The breed's creator, Louis Dobermann, was a tax collector in Germany who needed a personal bodyguard to keep him safe from angry citizens. He did not need a dog to run away and chase people down; he needed a fearless defender that would sit by his side silently, acting as a quiet deterrent until an immediate, close-range danger appeared. While herding dogs might win modern athletic competitions, Dobermans are still uniquely suited for home defense because they are naturally wired to stay close and guard their human without needing hyperactive energy.
