Hi, I have been MIA from this account for while. Life got busy as I was in my final year of architecture school but I am back now. I will try and be active here and post on a weekly basis. Writing has always been a sort of comfort zone for me. I created this account with the hope that it will inspire me to continue loving architecture but I stopped posting due to many personal reasons. I took my time to tend to them and now I will be more disciplined and get back on my feet again.

GOAL: I will start a series in here, where I will write about my 10 famous architect and how their designs have inspired me in my day to day life.

The word “floating city” has been used for several centuries  , from the chinampas of the Aztec Empire to the canal city of Amsterdam (1). The concept of a floating utopia on water isn’t inconceivable. Architects are usually familiar with the term Amphibious Architecture, hence floating cities aren’t too far for the human settlement. Settlement  constructed on a huge waterbody for the benefit of ecosystem and survival of humanity can be termed as floating city, thus increasing the chances of the idea of sustainable urban, ocean-based communities with an aim to grow, adapt and transform over time.

                   Recently due to threat of climate change and the introduction of new technology a lot of stress has fallen over manmade civilization on land, hence to reduce such problems architects and other UN dignitaries have come up with the concept of floating cities.(1)

                    The prospect of floating city is much beneficial to human civilisation as they will be protected from environmental disaster such as Tsunamis, floods, tornados etc. They would be resilient to climate changes such as rise of water level causing flood as they will be inclusive of buoyant designs. They will also have  lower carbon emissions as it will be using renewable sources such as solar, tidal, hydro and wind power. These cities will also be banning the usage of high carbon emitted cars and waste trucks carrying them in turn they will be using pneumatic trash tubes which would transport trash to a sorting facility, where they would be recycled or repurposed (1).

                    On April 2019, the UN-Habitat discussed the possibility of using floating cities to reduce the damages associated to climate change. The Oceanix floating city in South Korea is a project that is helping coastal cities that are threatened by sea levels. The floating city intended to house people whose existing communities are most susceptible to the threat of rising seas. The proposed city would not only be built on water but would also have a harmonious relationship with it. It is designed from scratch to be climate-neutral and completely sustainable. It is the world’s first sustainable floating city prototype. It is made of hexagonal platforms to provide more space for communities in coastal areas. The Oceanix project aims to create these cities, which are designed to float through the water about a mile away from a coastal city (1).

The lift house, Dhaka Bangladesh, by Prosun architect is a project where amphibious architecture has been used hence the practice of proposing site on water has been continuing for ages but rather than holding back the land from sea some new generations architects have proposed the idea of embracing the sea with its own benefits and to incorporate it as a resource for the betterment of this hungry, polluted, and apocalyptic environment                     

                  While the concept of floating cities have yet to be implemented in reality, one might come across certain challenges while building it like the whole idea is based on the fact that people migrate to these cities to avoid overcrowding in the land but this can also encourage the idea of overpopulation rather than minimizing it as it might become a coping mechanism of human being to again exploit the ocean. Another important challenge one might face while building a floating city is the huge costing required to build it. A city on a scale on a larger scale that should have sewage, transport, agricultural and other necessary factors. To implement this on a city while maintaining it’s low weight and buoyancy and other physical component one might need high end products which can be highly expensive. Even the usage of prefabricated materials in The Oceanix while implementing it costed a lot too.  The most recent assessment of the project, which occurred in 2013, concluded that a small floating city for up to 300 residents could cost as much as $167 million as mentioned in the 2017 interview (1). Lastly floating cities are being built to be climate conscious, but one might forget the dent it is making in the huge marine life beneath it. With the increase in pollution with it, one can only imagine the atrocities it might cause to the underwater flora and fauna in the subsequent decades.

                    For keeping the settlements afloat, architects would use large pontoon structures filled with air to provide buoyancy to the platforms, mooring piles must be designed to adequately and safely resist all lateral loads resulting from the most adverse combination of loads which are likely to act on the flotation superstructure of the floating building and any vessel attached to the floating building or mooring piles (2). These platforms would be hexagonal, as it’s considered the most space-efficient architectural shape. The city would not be floating freely , but would be secured with the seafloor and anchored off the coast of a major city on the mainland. Ideally, these floating cities would eventually make up a circular network of communities which in turn would harness natural resources to provide the necessary socio-economic communications.

                     If such a city is ever to be realized in the near future, with the given scenario it might highly boost people’s moral for the people residing currently in the overcrowded coastal cities. It could also act as a refugee area by saving people from the traumatic experience of loosing homes due to environmental crisis. But as we know every good opportunity has a flip side to it. While the idea might give human civilization a boost in their wellbeing , it might also encourage over population with no repercussions.

                   Hence, whatever may the consequence be for the concept of floating cities, the ideas of it existing aren’t that farfetched anymore. With the rise in climatic problems sooner or later mankind needs to adapt with the ongoing global crisis and this seems like a good opportunity to follow through as it might keep the consequential damage to a minimum while providing for a greater futuristic settlement to live in.

Perhaps the most ambiguous concept in all of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work is the notion of “organic architecture,” something he struggled to define (and redefine) throughout his entire lifetime. The term organic architecture was first coined by the eminent architect “Frank Lloyd Wright”. He wrote that “the ideal of an organic architecture …… is a sentient, rational building that would owe its ‘style’ to the integrity with which it was individually fashioned to serve its particular purpose—a ‘thinking’ as well as ’feeling’ process.“

            But to understand all this one must first understand the phrase organic architecture.  Organic architecture is a type of architectural design where built forms are inspired by, built around, and blend in with their natural surroundings such as in mountains, dessert, forest, water etc. An organic architecture refers to its relationship with nature and its simplistic use of styles and natural materials that create a cohesive whole. One of the defining principles of organic architecture is achieving a harmonious balance among shells (built structures) , Anthropos and nature.  Few of notable organic architectural structures among us are :

Sustainability is a word that, like organic, is used nonchalantly quite often. A sustainable ecosystem is one where nature, the built environment, and human life, and their component coexist as a family without having a negative impact on their other self. Sustainability is colossal term meaning ,meeting our own needs without compromising on the future generation. Sustainable architecture is architecture methodology with a conscious state of mind. Sustainable architecture must fulfill all the needs required in today's growing world, while working on sustainable architecture one must think about the correct approach into the materials, technique, Space and the environment in one has to work. Sustainability usually becomes difficult while trying to maintain a balance in the project as it is quite an unique arena.

But in a world prominent for urbanization, gentrification and deforestation, organic architecture may offer a sustainable solution to the everlasting battle between mankind and nature. It may help to reconcile our continuously expanding cities and mass constructions with nature and our biosphere. People define organic architecture in today’s world by the connection between interior and exterior in their surrounding environment or the practice of abstracted plant geometries,  a form of architecture embedded in nature’s forms and principles. Some people believe  it relies on the juxtaposition of natural and modern materials, while few feel it  follow Wright’s vision of characterizing contrasts and volumes.

Organic architecture does priorities a type of local or regional construction, using traditional materials and resources from the area where the building is located. It is closely related to its context and is aware of the specific geographic features and cultural aspects of its surroundings, being strongly influenced by them. For this reason, they are unique to different places in the world, becoming even a means of advocating a sustainable identity. While organic architecture itself alone wont solve the world problem of sustainability when plunged deeper into it, vernacular architecture might. Given that vernacular architecture is a subpart of it.  Today, many of the buildings throughout the world are made in organic architecture style as it  influences those looking to build homes made from sustainable materials and congruent with their environments.

If I could ever associate architecture with my feelings then it'd be something like this vibrant purple building. It'd be a concoction of all my affections and even my indignation. Every little intrinsic detail of that building would be something out of my tiniest imagination. Maybe the building itself would be something so majestic that it would remind me of home , the one I always wished for. It would be the most perfect art for me, it would almost be a part of me.

My grandmother visited her old home after 20 years of selling it. She came here with her husband (my grandfather) in her primary years, sadly it's been 19 year's since he is no longer with us.

I could see the sadness in her eyes, and the emotions she was feeling while walking through that familiar road that led to her old life.

Functional Furniture

These are probably the most 2022 idea right now according to our designers.  What better than a chair that usually acts as sitting place but in its free time can multitask as a book shelf?  The furnishings are simple and streamlined and very well go with empty spaces in one’s room. For this very reason, furniture is designed in such a way that it doubles up as hidden storage, best way to boost its efficiency and décor.

Neutral Colour Palette

According to the new year  the new neutrals are as blend able and versatile as the ones already that were already prevailing from early ages, but they branch out beyond the expected and increase the range of options for your neutral décor like muted blue, sage green. Neutral colours give the rooms more of a warm appearance which usually calms the mind in an subconscious level.  With little saturation, neutral colours seamlessly flow from one colour into the next. Most neutral palettes also reflect naturally occurring colours, shaping a living area into a relaxing, nature-based space.

Open Interiors

To put it simply, an open concept is a type of plan where walls and doors are taken out and living spaces merge into one. This gives the room, lot more to walk in and has more of a seamless flow in it and connects it more to nature like an open field making our mind feel more relaxed subconsciously. The allowance of open space and natural light greets the room with minimal elegance. It involves the use of bare essentials to create a simple and uncluttered space.

Choice of element

Styling of room in a particular accent plays a wide role in shaping the design. The king of décor , furniture makes an impact in the whole process. Thus our designers always advice to for a certain one look than a haphazard all for nothing.  Multifarious materials, dominating artwork, quality fixtures, functional and simple furniture, and pieces of light as a décor element are the things that create minimal interior design. 

Pattern less Décor

Gone are the days when a lot of patterns and colours were used in the walls decoration, now days people approach more to an unified solid colour.  The key to the design is to keep the spaces spare and well-edited with print-less fabrications. There is no room for patterns to take place. But, it is necessary to incorporate textures as those will be the only complimentary factor in creating a space.

In Indian homes traditions are much different that western norms. Starting from our roots, cultures to even flooring patterns we have quite a distinguished façade than western houses. Eclectic Interior Design for Kitchen

Eclectic interior design is a style that artfully mixes elements of multiple design styles into one space. 10. Scandinavian Interior Design for Kitchen

1. In the number one position we have the very best Mother-In-Law’s Tongues. These are low laying indoor plants which require almost no sunlight. This plant earns its unique name because of the sharp edges of its leaves. Not only does it grow exceptionally well without sunlight, it also purifies the air at home. Standing stiff and tall, it stores water in its foliage. Over watering these plants can cause their early demise. Other than that these plants are very much hassle free but they should not kept in pet acquainted house holds and they shouldn’t be held by bare hands as they sometimes can cause unnecessary irritations.

2. Coming in number two spot we have the lucky Bamboo Plants. Though it is not a bamboo plant, the lucky bamboo instantly captures hearts with its bonsai-like proportions. They are especially suitable for zen-like minimalist interiors and are commonly sold in two ways — potted in soil or suspended in water. According to feng shui, the lucky bamboo plants attract auspicious energy, depending on the number of stalks clumped together. These low light indoor plants that grow without sunlight are available in various sizes to suit any corner of your home.

3. On number three we have Peace Lilies. These beautifully aesthetic white variety of plants are those that don’t need sun and they purify the air at the same time. The peace lily does need regular watering and are needed to be kept away from direct light as its leaves can get damaged. they usually give a calm yet modern look to your desktop.

4. On number four we have Thriving Spider Plants. The chaotic way in which the spider plant grows makes it an attractive option for house plants, the way their leaves swirl and fall in their sides are a beauty to look into. People usually keep them in hanging pots or as normal decors. Keeping them in moderate to zero sunlight makes them thrive the best.

5. Up on number five we have The Maidenhair Fern. Talk about the close relative of the beautiful touch me not plant at your own home, well we got it covered by introducing the maidenhair fern. These plant prefers small containers and dislikes repotting. It is also intolerant of low humidity or dry air from heating or cooling vents when grown in the home. Therefore, it is better to mist the plant daily or set it on a water-filled pebble tray.

1. Balance

Balance is used to illustrate the visual weight of an image. It can either unite a photograph or create division. A carefully balanced image lends a sense of stability to a photograph. An unbalanced image creates disunity or unrest

2. Rhythm

The rhythm dictates the recurring or organized/disorganized distribution of visual elements throughout an image. To introduce a sense of rhythm to any photography, always visualize musical notation in the picture. The spaces, correlations, and differences between subjects in a photograph like this one reflect notes on a sheet of music.

3. Pattern

The pattern makes sense of the visual world through regularity. From man-made objects to organic material and abstraction. Elements of design can be organized in a predictable manner to form a pattern. These work in unison within a single frame.

4.Movement

The term ‘movement’ in photography often describes the relationship between the camera’s shutter speed and a subject. When it comes to art and design, movement refers to the path the viewer’s eye takes while reading a photograph.

5.Contrast

Contrast is created when two or more opposing elements are present in a photograph. Light against dark, warm against cool. Contrast includes physical elements too. The texture is another way to utilize the principle of contrast in photography. Including two or more textures in a photograph not only introduces tactility, but it also creates a sense of place.
