Crack Headcanon: this is because the van minigames are planned solely between Sly and Murray, who are both too honorable.

Murray: “These dogs want me to race them three times around a track for a key :(.”

Sly: “here’s my strategy: get in there and drive your best! It's all you man. Drive the van with the left analog stick, and if you manage to pick up any nitro power-ups, you can get a boost by pressing the square button. Go get 'em! I’m sure you can win this and prove you’re truly and fairly the better driver.”

So a lot of things just started falling into place at this point. There's a difference between writing and sketching and putting things in comic format. Got to show a lot of things that worked in my head, and play with concepts that didn't come about til drawing.

Also, I love Nyabootmon. She's sarcastic and incredibly petty, but has a soft spot for kids.

I ship JP and Zoe, too lol. In this AU I figure that Zoe is JP's initial choice. She's not interested. JP likes Clem on a superficial level. BIG acknowledgment that she's pretty as all get out. Clem is fully aware and not above using this to her advantage. Totally makes him carry her when she's tired. Juniper? They get along later. JP doesn't hate or love her in this moment. He thinks she looks cute. She and Clem have the same face and all. She's just not spunky like Zoe or peppy like Clem. She's kinda just there. JP has no strong opinions about her one way or another.

So Jokermon and Sirenmon were going to be two of the villains in the original version of this story. Crazy carnies kicked out of the circus for increasingly scary, creepy acts. Didn't vibe with that version, so now they're just two dudes.

So this was when I finally got access to Webglaze! No more marks!

I love this page. The kids don't ever get a chance to sleep in cozy beds in the series and man I just wanna be nice to those kids.

Speaking of nice, Takuya goes out of his way to make sure Juniper feels included and happy. She notices and appreciates, even though his attempts and reasoning isn't always on the mark. Juniper likes his kindness.

She has, for the beginning of the AU, a crush on Takuya. It's not canon, but personally I see the "Are you still worried?" moment as the moment where she started feeling that way. Juniper feels terrible about herself but dammit does she appreciate that kid's kindness.

Also no one at this point knows her name is Juniper and not Nini. She hates being called Nini. Rocking the boat doesn't feel worth it.
