The Matsumoto family lived in Harayama, Nuda, Kimitsu City, in the former Kururi domain, under the family name of Ichishi.
According to the death register, their history dates back to the early Edo period. The origins of their ancestors are unclear, and their origins and personalities remain a source of constant interest. Their names are inscribed on stone Buddha statues, including the posthumous Buddhist name of the Kitamuki Jizo, as donors.
Many of their relatives are former vassals of the Satomi clan. Considering these facts, they may have had ties to the Satomi clan. In Harayama, they initially took the Matsumoto surname, inheriting the name Yasuzaemon until the end of the Meiji period. Each generation read the Analects of Confucius, enjoyed Chinese poetry, Japanese poetry, and sake, and seemed to have a deep love of nature and a devotion to refined lifestyles.
During this time, they primarily practiced medicine, agriculture, and forestry, among other fields. Their family medicine, the miraculous ointment for vipers, was prescribed until the 1950s. Many visitors came from far and wide, but the advent of serums ended this role.
During the Edo period, he was highly trusted by Lord Kuroda of the Kururi domain, and there is an anecdote that he would always stop by during his annual inspection tour to eat his favorite botamochi (rice cakes with botamochi) and take a short rest. Incidentally, Matsumoto Ryuichimoto was a physician from Gengendo in Koito and is said to be a descendant of the 60th Emperor Daigo. The Matsumoto family also produced Matsuzaki Chuhachi, who, despite being from a farming family, became a Kururi domain samurai and achieved success.
With the implementation of the municipal system in the Meiji era, he served in important positions, including town council member and mayor of Kururi. He is said to have spared no effort in promoting the region's development, as evidenced by the commemorative gift commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Meiji era. As time passed, Japan miraculously recovered from the unprecedented ruins of the Showa era and developed into a period of rapid economic growth. Times changed dramatically, and it was difficult to resist the tides of the times, so he decided to leave his familiar, historic Harayama.
