Band update: week ending 2014/04/06
Band meeting!
Here's a quick update on happenings for the week ending 2014/04/06.
- Cryptorush, the exchange that handled FUNK, seems to have our coin stuck in "maintenance": https://cryptorush.in/index.php?p=trading&m=FUNK&b=LTC. I've mailed them, but they don't seem to respond.
- We have some other exchanges ("venues") in mind: https://www.mintpal.com/voting & https://comkort.com/vote/#FUNK. Remember to vote!
- We have new songs out! Soundposition added his usual dose of electronica. Gevelot added some prog rock to the mix. https://soundcloud.com/groups/the-cypherfunks. Cheers guys!
- We've been discussing the Timewarp exploit on the KGW on IRC [whether it is such a bad exploit as they say it is]. Any opinions are welcome: https://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=cypherfunks or https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=469407.0.
- I've been busy on the Android wallet, and getting a DNS seed up online. It's been slow. Running into really non-descript errors. If you want to help with that, please do: https://github.com/simondlr/cypherfunk-seeder <- code.
- n00bnoxious put up a new blockexplorer: http://funkexplorer.n00bsys0p.co.uk/. Thanks nox! Next beer is yours.
- Our hashrate seems to have stabilised around 4-5 MH. #strugglingband. Remember to spread the word!
- Florian, our bandmember who helped build out the p2pool node infrastructure got a new job that takes some time to get used to. Give him a virtual high-five.
- Soundposition has been thinking of sites that we can use to stream online gigs. Give us thoughts about which one can work.
Things planned for the week:
- Getting that DNS seed node online.
- Figuring out whether we need to hardfork for the TW exploit.
- More music. More is coming.
- Vote!
- Start design on a flyer we can hand out at the upcoming European music festivals. neuromode has been adamant about this. I think it's important!
- Spread the word. Spread the music.
Anything else? Let me know once we get the beers out.
Band meeting adjourned!
Cryptocurrencies as decentralized crowdfunding for communities.
Why is a cryptocurrency used as the basis for "The Cypherfunks"? What makes it different from using just any other currency [Bitcoin, USD, EUR, Rand, etc]?
This is a question we've often received [even on live television], and I would like to explain and emphasise why.
It comes to down to one important fact: ownership of both is not centralized.
Imagining a band that anyone can join from across the world, where anyone has equal freedom to affiliate and participate, means ownership should reflect it as well. For a project that is supposed to scale globally, using fiat currencies (dollars, euros) wouldn't work. It also means that currency doesn't represent ownership in the community. You could have gone the way of a traditional company and created equity & stock in the idea. But disbursement for this would be completely unrealistic, centralised and unfeasible (again) for a project that is supposed to be global.
You could've gone and used new innovations that cryptocurrencies provide such as the creation of coloured coins. This means, that you use Bitcoin as a token to represent something else. In real life it would be the equivalent of taking a dollar bill, making a tick on the one corner. Everyone would know it represents something else [not the actually value of the dollar in question]. The problem again with that, is that issuance is centralized. Someone has to create them and give them probably in an IPO-type process to individuals who feel vested in the idea (early adopters).
This makes the idea freer and fair. There's no reliance from anyone to take this idea to escape velocity. It is using cryptocurrencies as a new way of community funding. It is a global, freely and easily transferable liquid equity in an exciting grand experiment for making music in the digital age.
Looking for separates! Donating 100K FUNK per pack.
To kickstart creativity in a decentralized band, a cornerstone of it, is to have lots of samples/separates lying around for people to use and play with.
I've donated 2 million of my own FUNK to an address that will be used for payouts.
http://cypherfunks.tuxhosting.de/address/CZceCPycB2BCLayQ9jsgiijYb67h1Hfcg7
You donate to that address as well, so we can do more payouts.
For each separates pack, I will donate 100K from that address.
For more information, check out the thread on the subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/thecypherfunks/comments/1z9cti/separates_bounties_for_remixing_100k_funk_per_pack/.
If you are new to this, I suggest downloading a wallet from the official site and reading the Starter's Guide.

Looking for band members: We need at least a 1000 more people. Vacancies inside.
This one is for the musicians. We've started an exciting new experiment in music: a truly digital era project.
We are looking for band members. Currently, we are about 2-4 people. We need a lot more: like at least a 1000 more people to join the band.
Our band is called: "The Cypherfunks". We are the first 'decentralized band', 'open source' band, or 'cryptocollective': whatever works for you. It's a band anyone can join. It's a band anyone can make music for. Everyone IS the band, and can perform as the band at any live gig.
It represents the wonderful chaotic creativity of the internet: people from across the world coming together from their bedrooms and garages to make music.
As musicians we have a passion for letting our creations grace the ears of others. It brings us immense joy to see a smile, or an emotional response to music we created. The internet and technology has brought about a way for us to create and share the music to others across the world. But we've always been restricted by space and time to perform, to gig and spread the wonderful atmosphere of a great sound system and live music. "The Cypherfunks" attempts to destroy that barrier: we all create music under the same name, we can all gig under the name, playing our songs to audiences across the world, whilst still using the power of the internet to spread it.
Here comes the kicker, that allows us all to share in the success of the band: "The Cypherfunks" is backed by a cryptocurrency of the same name.
What is a cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrencies are one of the most exciting innovations to occur in the 21st century thus far. It allows anyone in the world to transfer value without the need for any central institutions for basically zero fees. Pioneers such as Bitcoin have proven it is possible to sustain an economy of $10 Billion. Currently, about 300 cryptocurrencies have come along, representing different networks of value.
The currency represents the collective: but it also acts as stock. Value of cryptocurrencies are simply the size of the network effect it enacts. If the band becomes successful, the currency becomes more valuable.
This is how we will also commend others in the collective for making awesome contributions: tipping them, buying beers at gigs and so on.
Okay, how do I get FUNK?
With a cryptocurrency, you can either mine it, or buy it from others who have already mined it. Yesterday, 21 Feb, "The Cypherfunks" was launched. Miners are already mining it. I will put a guide on how to mine it soon.
In order to receive FUNK, you will need one of the wallets for your platform (Mac, Windows, Linux). They are available on the website: http://thecypherfunks.com.
One synced to the network, you have an address that you can give out to others, with which they can then transfer FUNK to you.
Another way to acquire FUNK is to buy it from others. Once it becomes available from an exchange, it usually traded against Bitcoin (until other fiat currencies pairs becomes available down the line).
I will expand on this in new posts.
Let's do this!
There's 2 songs already out:
There might be some loopholes in the idea down the line, but I venture for the sake of the internet, and the amazing world we live in, it's a worthwhile experiment to try!
At the very least, we hopefully get to meet cool new musicians along the way.
So. We are looking for band members to join. At least a 1000 more. Bassists, guitarists, keyboard players, singers, producers, djs, the whole works! Let's go. If you have any questions on how to start, ask away in the comments below!
Also, check out the subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/thecypherfunks. This will be the best place to share music, remixes and so forth.
