Founded by Architectural designers Grant Menzies and Bobby Lee, The City of Play is an award winning creative Social Enterprise providing landscape, architectural and urban design solutions for the development of playful, child and family friendly communities. Freedom to 'Play' is a necessity. It is vital in our development as healthy individuals and as a civilised society. It has been said that Planners and Designers do not understand play benefit and rarely take it into consideration: Cities and urban space too often lack in 'free play' opportunities to the detriment of their citizens. Our approach - in transforming those everyday, in-between spaces of the city into vibrant 'places of play' - make opportunities for learning, discovery and an active lifestyle much more accessible and enjoyable. The City of Play believe in consulting the true experts on play - kids! We use their unique insights, perceptions and aspirations to inform a successful design brief and to instil a sense of ownership and duty of care to their new environment.

Before and After: Assemble Recreates Brutalist Concrete Playgrounds in Foam

As the Balfron Tower in east London—originally a product of 1960s social housing—is now being scrubbed up to be sold off as luxury brutalist apartments, the fate of its fantastical concrete playgrounds is less certain.

“The tower itself might have been saved, but we’re interested in what happens to the landscapes around these postwar housing estates, and what they represent,” says Jane Hall of young architecture collective Assemble, Chicago Architecture Biennial participants and Turner prize short-listers. As The Guardian notes, “they are currently rebuilding full-sized chunks of these brutalist playgrounds inside the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, in one of the most radical exhibitions ever staged in the prim surrounds of its Portland Place HQ.”

Kamila Szejnoch - Swing, 2008

Winner of the Szpilman Award, which is an international award for ephemeral/temporary art, Swing was installed on the Berling Army Soldier Monument in Warsaw, Poland.

“To suggest a change in the function of a monument is an attempt to build a bridge between the past and present, to add a contemporary layer distinct from its original function. It is an example of how much history can differ from the perspectives of individual and collective memory. My aim is to make this complexity and ambiguity more conspicuous, to show the relation between an individual and the historical machine.”
