CRISPR is very dangerous and I donât think humans are ready for that kind of power. I donât think we ever will be.
CRISPR is a gene editing tool. Itâs still in its early stages but it can, or will soon be able to, genetically modify anything. It could edit diseases out of DNA. It could edit in resistances to certain things. It could potentially snip out mutations that cause cancer.
Itâs already been tested on mosquito populations in Brazil and no one seemed to consider what would happen to the ecosystem when they did it and it fucked stuff up. They modified mosquitoes so that they would be sterile. The terminator mosquitos bred themselves out of existence and the remaining population that interbred but didnât go sterile developed resistance to such methods and experienced population booms to even out the loss of the sterile mosquitos.
This can be very fucking dangerous if it gets into the hands of bad people - and it WILL. People that would want to use it on humans. Sure, it could edit out mutations that cause babies to be stillborn. On the other hand, whatâs stopping someone from say.. sterilizing people that have the genetic markers for certain hair colors. Eye colors. Entire fucking races of people. Itâs eugenics at the push of the button.
CRISPR has the potential to do a lot of good but humans have to realize itâs a power that we are not meant to wield. Humans cannot be trusted with it. Itâs playing god where you donât even know the rules of the game.
chiming in as a nerd/scientist who has seen a lot of amazing and awful things done with CRISPR and other gene editing tools:
- Iâm pretty sure it was the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but there have been people whoâve called to use similar mosquito gene drives in parts of Africa, without consent from locals. White-saviour complex or treating people as test subjects, either way, itâs Bad.
- Itâs not just racism, but also ableism because there are still an awful lot of people who believe disability is oh-so-awful and would rather remove the variation in human experience from the population, instead of trying to accommodate it.
- monocropping has and will continue to fuck us up. Aside from financial fucking over of farmers, monocrops are vulnerable to the same diseases, which means that instead of losing part of a population, you lose the whole crop.
- if you can wipe out a species of mosquito, you can just as easily develop a bioweapon and destroy a crop.
Iâm really excited for a lot of the wonderful things I could potentially do with CRISPR, but at present, we donât have thorough enough guidelines, procedures, or enforced restrictions and we need to be cautious.
That said, genetically modified foods (GMO) are safe to eat or at least, being genetically modified doesnât make them unsafe.
The perfect aesthetic
Not only is the public's perception of ASPD horribly skewed, actual psychiatrists often have numerous misconceptions about what the disorder is and how it can present. Actually, that statement applies to many mental and physical illnesses, not just ASPD. And clinical diagnoses aren't always right. Even the diagnoses themselves are updated, and some are created or discarded entirely.
What I'm trying to say is, psychiatry as a whole is far from perfect, and psychiatrists are human beings who make mistakes like everyone else. ASPD, and its cousins CD and NPD, are incredibly misunderstood disorders, and while that won't likely ever change, at least I myself finally managed to get a proper diagnosis.

M42: Inside the Orion Nebula : The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby starbirth region, is probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Here, glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away. In the featured deep image in assigned colors highlighted by emission in oxygen and hydrogen, wisps and sheets of dust and gas are particularly evident. The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye near the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries. These nurseries contain much hydrogen gas, hot young stars, proplyds, and stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun. via NASA

Project Monsoon Clever colorful street art that only appears when it rains
After the Superhydrophobic Street Art, which uses a superhydrophobic coating to create designs which appear only in the rain, here is the Project Monsoon, which uses the same concept, this time with hydrochromic painting, which reveals its color only when wet. This amazing and clever project was designed by a Korean team of designers, in collaboration with Pantone, to provide color to the streets of Seoul during the rainy season, while paying tribute to the Korean culture. A brilliant idea! Source: ufunkÂ
The world is filled with such wonderful things.
:O
Thatâs cool!
Imagine, if you will, a street mural composed of both. Thereâs one artwork visible only when dry & a complementary (or counter) visible when wet. Oh, the possibilities!
Example: in a town near me; a mural of spinning when dry & a mural of weaving (when wet, because the early mills were powered by waterwheels).Â
sm bg redraws!

One could say that if we are all special snowflakes, we are also all part of the avalanche, and yet there is a key difference between us and snowflakes:
A snowflake in an avalanche doesnât get to decide where itâs going.
You do.
Therein lies your freedom, and your responsibility.
