During Jeb's long way home, night fell over Innisgreen. The house lay dark and still, only a flicker from the living room gave away someone was still awake.
And really, Francine seemed to have lured poor Jack into watching 'The Royal Channel' with her. They've even made tartes and cakes and stuff.
For a moment Jeb pondered to rescue Jack, but Jack was capable to speak for himself and Jeb was too tired anyway.
So after saying a brief hello and taking a brief shower, Jeb fell into his bed and fell fast asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
He had wondered since this morning if Saiwa would visit him in his dreams like last night, and it didn't take long until he held him in his arms again.
Jeb was so happy, pulled Sai even closer and inhaled his scent to make the most of the dream before it would be over.
But Saiwa looked worried when he caressed Jeb.
Saiwa: "I'm so sorry. But you must sleep now."
So soon? Jeb wasn't ready to let go of Saiwa so soon.
He felt so right in his arms - it felt so right.
Them together felt so right it almost hurt, and Jeb felt tears burning in his eyes.
Saiwa intensified the sleep spell on Jeb and Jeb's eyes blinked slow and heavy.
He felt himself slipping from the dream, but he tried to hang on as long as he could.
There was something he needed to tell Saiwa before he surrendered to sleep: "I love you."
"Jeb, I . . ." Saiwa stiffened, his fingertips tore into Jeb's shoulder, his nails piercing his skin, but these were only the portents of the pain that would hit Jeb before this night was over and there was nothing he could tell him to make it easier for him.
Eventually Jeb's breath evened and his arms fell from Saiwa's hips where he'd held him tight.
It was better this way. Like he tried to convince himself earlier this day, ripping the band-aid off in one short tug would spare them prolonged suffering. How were a lust demon and a pure being like Jeb supposed to work out in the long run? Jeb would only be hurt and Sai couldn't bear it.
Saiwa left Jeb, but before he went through the door and over to Francine to also intensify her sleep, he turned around and whispered:
'I love you. And . . . and don't forgive me.' With a sob he left Jeb's room.
Saiwa stepped downstairs as silently as possible - which wasn't easy with hooves! - to let Jeffrey in . . .
Jeffrey sneered at Saiwa: "That was a brilliant idea to put them asleep while I use the house for my spellwork. Much cheaper than buying the whole shack. Now let's discover the secret and get to work! I must admit you didn't look much when you stepped through the portal and I was expecting something - much - better than an Incubus, but you're quite useful and clever - and pretty. I think I'm gonna keep you."
Inside, Jeffrey let lose a glowing green-blue light ball that started hovering through the hallway, as if it was searching for something.
It didn't go far and flickered, and Jeffrey started to curse.
This was probably another of his inferior spells.
But in its last sputterings it revealed an opening in the floor and a ladder leading down.
Jeffrey: "Seems you're my lucky charm, Beautiful. You go first."
Sai made it down safely and Jeffrey followed.
This seemed like an ordinary basement.
"Open that door", Jeffrey commanded.
Saiwa obeyed and stepped carefully around the hole in the floor and did as he told - just to face a Werewolf!
Poor Saiwa's nerves were on the edge and he took cover, Jeffrey just laughed at him.
But the Werewolf was just a drawing on the wall and this was also just a standard basement workshop.
Jeffrey muttered under his breath, dissatisfied and angry.
Saiwa just hoped he wouldn't take his anger out on him.
When they went back to the first room, they heard muffled shuffling and voices behind a wall piled up with junk.
The skull relief on the wall emerged some poisonous looking haze and Saiwa wasn't so sure anymore of his gorgeous plan to keep Jeb and Francine out of troubles.
But power-hungry Jeffrey was impatient and relentless and asked him to get going to remove the junk.
So Sai got to work - and really there was a hidden door!
Of course Jeffrey asked already coughing Saiwa to go first and he stepped into a strange scenery:
Jeffrey still had his first encounter with Saiwa's evil Little Goat and Horse vividly in his mind and so he demanded Sai to put the Little Goats asleep as long as his operation was going on.
But then nothing could keep him from entering the room, he pushed Saiwa aside and stepped into the magic circle to claim power over this place. . .
A hollow chuckle rose from the altar and the surrounding creatures came to life nd turned towards Jeffrey.
The skull began to speak: "We don't serve you, Jeffrey Mays! Leave this house and this village as long as you can before we unleash DEATH upon you!"
A rooster with burning eyes materialized and stepped through the fog towards Jeffrey and the creepy eyes of the duck and the Gnome followed his every frightened movement.
This was when Jeffrey realized this was - by far - too big for him and he had to seek his luck in another place - far far away from here.
Saiwa and Jeffrey just stumbled out of the house, when a certain werewolve's ear twitched . . .
Apparantly - after wolving down all those cakes and tartes - Jack had fallen into a food coma and Saiwa's slumber spells had seeped through the floor somehow so he hadn't noticed the intruders.
But now he was wide awake again! He scrambled up, saw the trapdoor in the hall, smelled the fouly scent of Jeffrey, put one and one together and ran outside to hunt the intruders down!
Jeffrey was followed by Tyalindo . . .
. . . so Jack ran after Saiwa to ask him what the hell he was thinking by letting Jeffrey inside the house and put Francine and Jeb in jeopardy!
But he also was a very loyal and faithful Wolf, and his remorse drove him back to the house before he could beat Saiwa, the traitor, up.
Jack was mad at himself.
It was unexcuseable he'd failed to protect his friends!
He had to make sure they were safe before anything else!
Jack found them unscathed, woke them up, filled them in about what had happened and they descended down to the basement.
Where the talking skull introduced himself as 'Skully' . . .
(We've met Skully already in our main story. -> Here is his chrono.)
Francine was utterly perplexed. She - and Jeb too - were powerful witches, how could this whole subterranean ritual site exist right beneath their feet without them knowing about it?
And how did the Little Goats - among them even Jeb's own - get in here to perform weird rituals?
Skully had an easy but very unsatisfying explanation:
Because it wasn't necessary. They liked to have their peace down here, the Little Ones and Malfoy, the cock with the burning eyes, entered the basement through the portal whenever they liked, sometimes they met for their parties. There was simply no need to reveal themselves or this basement.
Though, it was a bit concerning that Jeffrey had knowledge of this place and its powers . . .
Before he could usher Francine and Jeb upstais to get some much needed rest, Jack noticed three tarot cards lying in the center of the circle and he asked Skully about the meaning of them.
Skully: "That's pretty self-explaining, isn't it? The first card is 'The Fool'. See, Tarot does not start with card #1, 'The Fool' is card #0."
Quote: "We begin with the Fool (0), a card of beginnings. The Fool stands for each of us as we begin our journey of life. He is a fool because only a simple soul has the innocent faith to undertake such a journey with all its hazards and pain.
At the start of his trip, the Fool is a newborn - fresh, open and spontaneous. The figure on Card 0 has his arms flung wide, and his head held high. He is ready to embrace whatever comes his way, but he is also oblivious to the cliff edge he is about to cross. The Fool is unaware of the hardships he will face as he ventures out to learn the lessons of the world.
The Fool stands somewhat outside the rest of the major arcana. Zero is an unusual number. It rests in the exact middle of the number system - poised between the positive and negative. At birth, the Fool is set in the middle of his own individual universe. He is strangely empty (as is zero), but imbued with a desire to go forth and learn. This undertaking would seem to be folly, but is it?" (found -> here)
Skully continued: "This is obviously you, he even looks like you, doesn't he? The little dog shows your current wolf shape. And you're about to go on a Journey, right? The second card tells us this, it's card #7, 'The Chariot'."
Jack's head was spinning - how was this even possible? "Uh, right."
He wondered how Skully could knew about that, and how he knew how he looked in his human form ö.Ö'
Sully: "You will have two companions on your Journey. The white llama is your companion for the upcoming Pilgrimage and the black one is your companion through your journey of life, your soul mate."
Stunning - a soul mate? That was hard to believe - but the other foretells had been correct, so. . .
But a companion for his Pilgrimage. That wasn't planned.
Except Skully was talking about his Little Goat? How long was this little brat even attending these parties down here? It was obvious the little goats were running off quite often without being found for hours, but this?
Jack was almost afraid to ask but the anticipation was killing him:
"And the last card?"
Skully: "I'm not quite sure about this one. It's 'Temperance', card #14, and it's a bit out of context, since temperance is not really your style and the card itself marks one of the more advanced stepstones in the Fool's Journey, far out of reach for you in the near future since you're just starting, huh. So I think you're actually going to meet a Mermaid! How exciting!"
Skully had nothing more to tell them and asked Jack to set up the record player and turn it on so they could continue with their party.
(And this is how Skully brought the music back! (Skully was already the DJ of many episodes in the main story.))
'It's cold outside - The night love died
On the night you murdered love
It's cold outside - The night love died
On the night you murdered love
. . .
I see love walk away
Didn't use a blade
A bullet or a gun
You poisoned the moonlight
When you put out the sun'
ABC - The Night you murdered Love
(we already had this song for an episode in the main story almost exactly 2 years ago)
And poor Jeb just stood there, barefoot on the cold stone floor, he didn't care. He was in shock over Saiwa's betrayal and rather succumbed to numbness than feeling the agony of his stone-cold heart.
Saiwa when I logged in, as if he knew what's about to come.
The way Jeb looks at Sai, I always loved how aware they are of each other.
Saiwa lost the love of his life, but hey, it's raining!
Sure, Tyalindo, make friends with the enemy -.-
