Since that first day, the story says, the flame has burned perpetually lower. One day it will burn out entirely, and magic will disappear from the world forever, taking with it the brightness that creates new life. Until then, it fades slowly, too slowly for mortal beings to sense, save for perhaps the dragons who are said to live long enough to see the stars themselves change.
