She still couldn’t believe she went through eight years of medical school for this.

It wasn’t like Aki hated her job as a school nurse, but the times she had felt actually useful and that she was making a difference in her career like she’d always wanted were few and far between. Besides a passing recognition, she hardly even knew this ‘trouble maker’ student. Whatever it was he did that got him into trouble so many times, it certainly wasn’t picking fights with other students or he would have ended up in the nurse’s office sooner.

Pinching the bridge of her nose, Aki let out a sigh before remembering where she was and that the student in question is sitting right in front of her. She straightened up immediately and gave the kid a tired smile.

None of this made any sense, and he could only rub the back of his neck in frustration as he tried to keep things at least a bit more lighthearted. But it…Was difficult to try and reconcile their circumstances. Crow himself had lived a whole different life, with a whole different set of people. And he remembered everything, so Aki must, too. They had basically spent most of their lives together, and that kid…

It must mean that kid was someone they would run into, too. Was there another copy of him? Probably…

And looking at Aki, while he was already struggling with it, he couldn’t imagine how she was feeling.

“Yeah…Though I’m way more worried about that kid than I am about either of us. Even in a whole other world, we can handle each other. He could be out doing anything, being a teen and all.” He frowns. “And we don’t have a quick way to get there.”

…Unless - he’d left most  of that behind him, buuut…

“You…Don’t think anyone would mind if we borrowed a car, right Doctor?” He looks almost sheepish about it. Almost. But he absolutely knew how they could easily ‘creatively borrow’ a vehicle, and he’d fill it up with gas and return it! It’s an emergency anyway!

Aki looked at Crow, surprised. “You don’t think Yusaku was a hallucination?” It felt a little strange to say his name now that she wasn’t sure he was even real. “I thought that- I mean logically, it makes sense that he would be part of the hallucination too... but if it wasn’t a hallucination-”

Shaking her head, she took a deep breath. She didn’t like the idea of her mind being toyed with again, but there were other things to worry about at the moment. “Either way, first things first. We won’t be able to help anyone if we’re dead.”

“And just ‘Aki’ is fine.” She smiled despite herself, “hearing you say any term of respect is just too strange for me right now.”

When Crow mentioned taking a car she hummed thoughtfully rather than disapprovingly. “Hm. I don’t see why it would be a problem so long as we bring it back. It is an emergency after all. One minute.” Patting down her pockets, she found a pad of paper she usually used to write prescriptions and jotted down a note: “We’re borrowing your car. If you have a problem with that call me at ###-###-####. -Dr. Aki Izayoi”

Part of his duties as an assistant were organizing everything at the end of the day, and making sure the inventory that up-to-date so the end of the week order would be accurate. But as he heard his mom call for him, he nodded and walked over, holding his clipboard. It was a tough day - it usually was - but it wasn’t rare for them to take in a last-minute patient.

It was, however, rare for them to take in a non-humanoid patient, if not abnormal for non-humans. But, at the end of the day, he didn’t find it surprising that she had taken in a stray. She had taken in him, after all.

“Of course. He seems calm enough…” He walks over, giving the dog a little pet as he places one hand on his back. It should be…Simple enough. He nods up at his mother, signaling he was ready, before adding. “Have you been in contact with a shelter yet? Are they expecting us at a particular time?”

“He was a little nervous at first, but he seems to have calmed down now. You know, I don’t have a lot of experience with animals but I’ve read that they can read fear in your body language. I felt like you might have a way with them since you’re always such a calm presence.”

It seems she was right. With two quiet and peaceful people in the room with him, the dog gave a trepid little whine when Aki started to change his bandages, but quickly settled when she gave his scruffy ears a pat.

“...I actually haven’t called a shelter yet. I guess I didn’t think that far ahead,” she admitted with a small laugh. “Maybe we could keep an eye on him for a few days to make sure he’s healing well?”

Maybe something in Yusaku’s expression gave him away, or maybe looking after a stray simply reminded Aki of herself, Yusaku, and her friends -- either way, Aki felt like she had a pretty good idea of what was on Yusaku’s mind.

“The poor thing doesn’t have any tags, so he probably doesn’t have a family... but that doesn’t mean he won’t. He’s very sweet and I’m sure lots of people will love him once they get to know him. Sometimes it just takes a little longer for someone to find where they belong.”

“Well, your blood pressure is good, if a little on the low side.” Aki removes her stethoscope and writes a few notes in Baizhu’s file. She has a smaller one which she brings to her patient’s house for visits, and a larger one back at her office which includes most of her research notes.

“Have you had much fatigue lately? Dizziness upon standing? Oversleeping?” Gently, she removes the cuff from his upper arm while she speaks and places it back into her travel case.

Aki pauses to give him time to answer and looks out of his living room window. There was a small flurry of snow beginning to come down.

“I hope the weather is treating you well. My roses started their dormancy a little late this year... I think they’re telling me that we’ll have a bitter spring.”

“I know you’re almost done for the day, but could you help me with one last patient, please?” The doctor opens one of the doors to reveal her “patient.” Inside, laying on the exam table, a scruffy grey dog with floppy ears and a bandage on his foreleg perks up at the sight of them.

“I know he’s not really a patient, but I found him outside this morning and he looked so lonely! He was good for me when I put the bandage on, but I wanted to take a closer look at it. Would you mind holding him while I change his bandages, please? I want to at least get him all fixed up before I bring him to a shelter.”

“You don’t have any signs of a concussion, which is good.” Aki stops shining her pen light into the teen’s eyes to sit back and sigh while she writes a note on her clipboard.

“Your worsening headaches are most likely caused by frequent use of the Intraspace.” She stops writing for a second to glare at Kaito over her notes. “You must know the side effects from Intraspace overuse; they’re posted all over Fibbonacci.”

The doctor puts her notes down and gathers some bandages and an antiseptic spray.

“Luckily, that,” she gestures to a nasty scrap on the teenager’s forearm, “I can make sure is treated hear and now. Hold out your arm for me, please.”
