People bitch about not having patients and then when they have more access to patients, they bitch about not getting paid enough cuz the system is evil. "Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) introduced the Acupuncture for Heroes and Seniors Act. The bill permits members of the uniformed services access to qualified acupuncturist services without the requirement of a referral and requires that acupuncture services be offered to all veterans. The bill also ensures that qualified acupuncturist services are covered by Medicare so that seniors have another effective treatment option available to them. In addition to increasing access, the bill recognizes the important contributions of this medical field and makes acupuncturists eligible for appointments as Commissioned Officers in the Armed Forces and in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps."
This is HUGE news for acupuncturists! Unfortunately the hippies will probably come out and complain about the âSystemâ or something about how evil insurance companies are.

When I get to talk about professionalism and cultural appropriation to acupuncture students
Unlike plenty of other mystic beliefs, the practical nature of acupuncture has the benefit of making it readily falsifiable through the form of a sham study. In a sham study we can compare genuine acupuncture, in which real acupuncturists provide treatment, to sham acupuncture in which researchers go through the motions, randomly poking or randomly pretending to poke their patients with needles. More research has been done into acupuncture than practically any other kind of alternative medicine, yet the evidence from thousands of studies points conclusively to the fact that acupuncture, at worst, is completely ineffective and, at best, is no more effective than a placebo. Astoundingly, the benefit of acupuncture is so poor that in plenty of studies, even compared to no treatment, the benefits of acupuncture are practically impossible to noticeâŚ
Hmm provide me some studies and Iâll critique their design and provide you with larger and better designed studies. Here are some points to take:
1. Acupuncture isnât some mystic medicine. Itâs been portrayed that way thanks to hippies who brought it over and mistranslations. Its not about magical energy.
2. Sham acupuncture varies study to study. The sham can be puncturing random points (which can be other traditional acupuncture points), puncturing gently, or using a needle that doesnât puncture. Sham acupuncture doesnât make sense to begin with. People donât know the exact mechanism of action of acupuncture, so how can you make a fake version? Acupuncture canât be treated like a pharmaceutical. The best type of studies are comparative studies of acupuncture vs standard care or meta-analysis. Kinda like the Vickers study which looked at over 17,000 people and stated there was a âmodestâ difference between acupuncture and sham to show that itâs not just placebo. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22965186
3. Letâs say sham is a legit thing to do in a study, who said the ârealâ acupuncture was designed well? Each study has a protocol for treatment. In the real world, there is more than one protocol to treat a specific symptom and you have to factor in needle gauge, insertion depth, retention time, and manual/electric stimulation to name a few. There are a lot of variables that go into an acupuncture treatment so the terminology is used incorrectly. Itâs not that acupuncture doesnât work, it is the acupuncture protocol in the study that didnât show to be effective. Do you ever hear of a study that proclaims all pharmaceuticals donât work?
4. There are studies that show how acupuncture affects local connective tissue and fMRIs showing how it affects the brain and various systems in the body. Some of them are open source so you can read the full article online.
5. You donât need to believe in acupuncture for it to work. You just do it. Acupuncture for low back pain is commonly studied. Low back pain is also one of the easiest conditions to notice a difference with acupuncture. If a patient leaves not feeling at least a little better than when they came in, they had a bad treatment.Â
6. Acupuncture works. To an extent. Itâs more effective in treating certain conditions than others. Itâs also not an alternative medicine. Itâs always been part of integrative medicine. Thatâs how it was introduced to many Americans from China. Yet when it came over to the U.S. it became East vs West for some reason. In the end, itâs not about any particular medicine, itâs about the patient and what works best for them.

Whenever I see a media article about acupuncture describe Qi as âvital energyâ
I had a woman in my anatomy and physiology class who seemed to believe that learning anatomy wasn't "necessary" for the field. Oh my god. I could not even formulate a response I was so dumbfounded. In what world can you study this profession and believe that? Whilst there are quite a few serious and genuine students, ones like these make me want to stick my head in the sand. It gives such a poor impression of the field. I hope I can be one of the people to change that!
I had those types when I went to school also. For some reason, people assumed whatever practitioners knew of the body thousands of years ago is the end all be all. âClassicsâ such as the Nei Jing was written to get the medicine out of shamanism and something less woo woo. Those practitioners/authors would be rolling in their graves if they learned of the mentality of some of the new age practitioners we have today. You need to learn anatomy. People who wrote the Nei Jing did to their best knowledge of the time. How else do you get all those organ measurements?
Hi there! I am a relatively new student of acupuncture up in Canada, where the profession (at least in my province) is strictly regulated. Even students are required to have a student license -- which is just great. I just wanted to thank you so much for running this blog - it is fantastic, and I really get a lot of the frustrations that you post about (particularly with some of the "new age" types that you seem to see drawn to the field here and there).
Hello there! Thanks for the support! The field definitely has a long ways to go and it is sad that so many in the West are the new age types. They are the ones bastardizing this medicine by explaining it and possibly practicing it improperly. If we as acupuncturists donât call out on the issues that plague our profession, others will and when others do it, it can be much more damaging. The most we can do is volunteer for our acupuncture associations. Network and get involved with the profession as well as argue with hippies and so forth :)Â
Been seeing this on my newsfeeds. This is what makes my profession look like it consists of a bunch of dum dums. This community acupuncture org sounds like an entitled, bratty, whiny little kid who thinks he/she should be treated like royalty. They want the NCCAOM, the org that does the board exams, to address the âethicalâ issues of the profession by lowering tuition and lowering board exam cost because acupuncturists are poor as fuck.
1. You didnât know how much acupuncture school would cost you despite signing off those loan papers? TOO BAD. Donât go to acupuncture school. WTF are you thinking? Did you check income stats or how fucked up the profession is the US before applying? You shouldâve know the debt youâd be having before going into school, not after. RESPONSIBILITY. English is my second language and I know what it means, do the hippies know?
2. Price is not the issue. Quality is. Considering the quality of education of this medicine in the US ranges from the shittiest of shit to just plain shit, a lot needs to be done. There are over 60 acupuncture schools in this country and none of them have a similar curriculum. Blame the shitty accreditation board for that. A lot of acupuncturists should not be able to treat people in my opinion. There are a lot of idiots out there tainting the profession as well as a lot of people who shouldnât be teaching. The people who taint the profession are those who donât improve their patientâs condition, refer when necessary, and/or explain the medicine in some esoteric hippie ass way no one in Asia does.
School wise, a lot of faculty in schools are pretty much people who couldnât cut it in private practice and became TAs who moved up to teaching positions. Thereâs not many who do it for the love of the profession, but the ones that do, I admire. For real. After most of the schools get shut down, then there will be real competition for faculty positions.
3. If you want to speak ethics, what the fuck about POCA Tech? How do you justify having a âtechâ school that tries to JUST meets the shitty accreditation standards? Iâm all for these âtechâ schools but graduates better be working under a licensed practitioner and not be able to get licenses themselves.Â
Federal Acupuncture Bill
There is a proposed bill in the works by the AAAOM (American Association of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) to get acupuncture into medicare. Just take that in for a minute and imagine how much that will open for the profession. More access never hurts.
Sadly there doesnât seem much support. Either people donât know about it, or they are a hippie opposed to having acupuncture in medicare coverage. Yea I donât understand why either, maybe they think less people will come to their overpriced bullshit seminars.

âHe said we do too much biomedicine, the truth is in the classics. I said âyeah, but I donât live in ancient China. Then later in the same conversation, a friend was saying he was going to China & the guy said âIs it one of those hospitals that sees 100 people a day?
