X-Treme X-Men #17 (2001)
I need to take a second and talk about this panel. It is one of my all time favorite Romy moments, and one of those moments where I knew I just adored them, and that was never going to change.
I mean, they've both just been impaled by a giant sword. They've both lost their powers. It's been a real insane few days. They had just been joined together by a giant skybeam in an attempt to bring a bunch of invading aliens to Earth. (It's Chris Claremont and his weird space fetish.)
But this moment is so intimate. So sweet. So sassy. Very much them. Long before they get married. But long after their awkward dance around each other in the 90s stuff, we have this era. (Bless Claremont, despite the space fetish.) Where even as they're finding each other again, there both are always there for each other. Each not really being able to live without the other.
You can say a lot of things about the X-Treme run. A lot of it... is kind of a mess. But it remains one of Rogue and Gambit's greatest runs. (at least, imo.)
