Jan had decided to take the babysitting job for experience. The chance to see the world through a kid’s eyes. As a theater major at the local college, being able to put herself in anyone’s shoes was a benefit. But to be able to do that, you had to observe.

When Tony had described Peter, she was quite eager to take the job. Peter was clearly smart, witty, and sounded like a lot of fun. She hadn’t expected a kid who seemed like a wallflower at a middle school dance. Poor guy seemed like he just wanted to spend some time with his dad.

Luckily, Jan was great at improvisation.

“You know, I think you’re right. You seem like a pretty responsible kid. I could go. But…I was hoping you might wanna play LEGO Indian Jones 2.” Jan waves the package containing the game enticingly in her hand.

Peter eyed her, and the game she waved around.   Either she was smart enough to look up what kids might like, genuinely liked the things, or his Dad tipped him off.  “I know what you are doing.”  He stated with a reasonable tone.

Looking down at his books he tilted his head to the side as he considered.   Well she was actually here.   Wasn’t going to just leave.   So he could sit here and work on his books or have a crack at a new game.    While both ideas had some appeal what would give him the most benefit over time.

“How about we make a deal.”  Peter flipped the book close and looked up at Jan.   “You don’t treat me like a stupid kid and I won’t try to pull a fast one on you.  I don’t need a babysitter, I’m not a baby.   But would like to play the game, and I don’t mind hanging out with people.”  Very equatable terms he would say.   

“Also if Dad ends up having you come next time could you bring one of your collage textbooks?”  Okay he was curious.   He wanted to get a leg up on some more challenging stuff.   He couldn’t quite pull off the calm veneer he wanted to.  Under the table his leg jiggled with nervous energy.

Jan blinked a bit in surprise, but nodded. Mr. Stark had told her that Peter was intelligent. She hadn’t expected him to ask about her textbooks.

“Sure. I can bring some of my text books next time. They’re mostly about acting and theater.  And don’t worry. I know you aren’t a baby.” She smiled and hoped it was reassuring enough. She could tell that he just needed a friend, not anything overbearing.

“That’s right! We need a name! It should be something colorful and dramatic, like…the Avengers.”

Collage kids did not generally want to hang out with under-aged high school students.  Maybe the did if they were related or something but generally not otherwise.   So Peter fully knew what having Jan there meant when his Dad had a thing and his Mom had a thing.   If they thought he didn’t know what it meant they were all very sadly mistaken.   They didn’t jump him up several grades in school because he couldn’t put two and two together and come up with four.

So he very pointedly had his textbooks out on the table.  His advanced books that were even a bit beyond some of high school classes.   Peter might be a twelve year old in high school but that didn’t make him a baby in need of some more adult type person watching him.  People in high school were the baby-sitters, not the ones being watched.
