it bothers me when someone brings up misogyny in shounen anime and people shrug it off with "its designed for teenage boys, what can you expect." like well. idk i think its actually pretty important that shows for teenage boys are normal about women. i mean i think all media should be normal about women but teenagers are impressionable i think we could put a little bit of feminism in the teenage boy shows. it might do some good. you never know.
As a little girl, I LOVED Inuyasha. It has everything, it has folklore, it has violence, it has romance, it has strong people both men and women. You better bet my favorite character was Sango (duh). And I also loved Sakura Card Captornand Ojamajo Doremi but part of what I love in Inuyasha was that they were on a quest, they were traveling the world facing enemies.
So I desperately looked for other anime like that. A lot of them I quit very quickly, because even as a little kid I felt so uncomfortable with the under the skirt shots and the big bouncy boobs. Some others I tried, but I got so bored because indeed there was no women for me to see myself in, or they could have very easily been replaced with a cardboard when there was, because they were so inconsequential to the story. And it's easy to say "well can you see yourself represented in a man" but that's always told to women. Why don't men identify with Scarlett Witch, or Tsunade, or Kikyo, or Jean Graley, oh no, cause that would be girly, they'd rather be Wolverine, or Inuyasha, or Naruto. Well the same is true for girls.
Shaman King, Digimon, Jujutsu Kaisen, are a few example where women are a bit more fairly represented. They're not really even fundamental to the story and act mostly as support, but at least they're treated like humans.
The only other anime I can think of where women are as consequential to the story as men, that are Shounen, other than Inuyasha, is FMA:B and it has something in common with Inuyasha: their creators are women.
I also don't get the concept of "designed for teenage boys". An adventure anime where a group of friends embarks on a quest to find a legendary artefact. Dorset that sound like something only boys can enjoy? I understand shojo animes are designed for girls because boys are made to believe they can't care about romance. But what part of an epic adventure seems outside of what women will enjoy.
You will absolutely adore Frieren . It’s an amazingly written anime overwhelmingly centred around women . Our main hero is an elf called Frieren who spends 99% of the time being incredibly bratty and self centred and 1% of the time she is an incredibly wise stone cold killer . Her protege Fern is quiet girl who has developed a LOT of anger issues because instead of being a teenager she spends most of her time acting like a parent to Frieren constantly having to explain to her that no they can’t sleep till noon , that no they can’t spend ten years chilling out in this village because unlike Frieren she is not immortal and ten years is a lot
The only main male character is Stark who is this sweet and innocent boy that shares a lot of similarities with Al from Fullmetal
and we also have some recurring characters like Serie who is the most powerfully elf in the world and Frieren grand teacher who is constantly disappointed that Frieren is such a loser
We have several female mages like Ubel who is technically good but a bit of a sociopath and loved finding excuses to kill people
We have these teen lesbians called Lawine and Kanne who are constantly fighting with each other because they can’t admit how they feel
And we have Methode who is beautiful and deadly mage/ priestess who is really horny for Frieren
I tried Frieren and didn't like it actually. It has many tropes that I've seen a thousand times so I wasn't inspired to keep watching.
Actually you don’t have to pick an aesthetic. I think picking an aesthetic kind of kills your creativity and individualism. No one was supposed to fit inside a mood board. Don’t turn art into a performance. Your expression is supposed to be messy, and felt, and you, not for the algorithm. Your expression is meant to be whatever you love, not altered to fit in.
I've never understood this!
When my cousin was 13 she cut her hair short, dressed as a boy only, watcher a ton of anime, learned how to skate.
Then at 14 she denied she ever did that, dyed the underside of her hair red, started dressing hella punk, and began listening to Arctic Monkeys and Mother Mother.
Then at 15 she denied she ever did that, became extremely girly, wore only flowery clothing. Started listening to Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. Started bullying a girl for watching anime (which I called her out on).
And I get it, I get she is discovering herself BUT.
When I was 10 I loved Sakura Card Captor, Power Rangers, and Rebelde all at the same time. I painted, I read, but I also trained volleyball every day. I would wear pink one day and black the other.
I was bullied from the ages 11-14 for liking anime and getting good grades, but I never stopped doing either. I still played volleyball. I still wore dresses some days and pants some others.
I was the exact same person at 15, I would design lego vending machines while listening to Little Mix and was invited to a lot of quinceañeras and spent most of the year watching Naruto for the first time.
I don't see why people think you have to put yourself in a box, or that you even can. Humans are complex and we can like more than one thing at the same time. I HATE horror movies, but I love creepy circus art. I love Radiohead AND Olivia Rodrigo. My most listened to artist last year was Akira Senju, the composer for Fullmetal Alchemist. You don't have to pick a camp you can do everything.

ALSO ODYSSEUS LITERALLY JUST GOES TO TROY HE JUST GOESSSSSSSS they don’t even TRY to put baby telemachus in the paper shredder he just dips without a fuss. they change odysseus hanging the maids to penelope kicking melantho out for girlboss reasons and they TOOK AWAY MY BAG OF WIND #mybagofwind they also took away the dipshit that falls off of circe’s roof and dies. deeply shallow meaningless movie.
They were at Circe's island for all of 5 minutes I was literally like huh??? In the cinema
I’m mourning how swag Sam could’ve stayed after season two especially if he had gotten together with Kurt
He's such a cool character in seasons 2 and 3. He's level headed, a honorable stand up guy, way less insecure than Finn. Then in season 4 he becomes an absolute cartoon
nolan’s odyssey is such a textbook study on the idiocy and dangers of presentism. yes of course penelope is a modern day feminist who wants to rule ithaca by herself. they make telemachus say that GREECE IS THE GREATEST CIVILIZATION IN THE WORLD as if the entire point of the massing of achaeans at troy for one unified cause isn’t spectacular precisely because THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF A UNIFIED GREECE NATIONS DO NOT EXISTTTTTT YETTTTT. literally 101 on historical writing is making sure that you’re avoiding strict periodization because the people living in a “period” will not identify themselves that way. ever. five million cheeky nods to “the sea peoples” but we’re being cute and coy and calling them “the people from the sea.” the obsession with xenia but refusal to call it xenia yes let’s say “zeus’s law” a hundred times and reduce it to the literal expectation that any stranger could be a god in disguise. how was penelope just hanging out in the main hall of the palace with her husband’s dinner guests while they were playing with weapons with her HAIR COMPLETELY DOWN no veil no nothing just chilling casually. comical. stoppppp making movies that engage in historical viewpoints if you’re going to slather a modernized coat of paint over the top. “the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.” or fucking whatever.

hearing anything about the nolan odyssey is so funny. it's like "they cut the extremely important and infamous nobody scene" "the cyclops is a giant puppet that they put in an actual historical cave + gave circe animatronics for her pig transformation instead of cgi" "they dumped plastic skeletons in an environmentally protected location they were not supposed to be in" "they recreated ancient greek instruments in order to have an accurate score" "all of odysseus's agency is basically gone" "anne hathaway actually learned how to weave ancient looms" "the women in this movie are treated like shit" "they actually buried actors alive to get those underworld shots" "did you see what the fuck zendaya was fucking wearing holy shit you can't DO THAT, MA'AM" "what do you mean there was a legitimate epic the musical reference" "NOT A SINGLE FUCKING GREEK WAS CAST IN THIS MOVIE"
like did nolan have two guys standing at his side at all times whispering ideas in his ear and one told the truth and the other told lies and they didnt tell him which was which until they wrapped production cause
Why did she learn to weave? She doesn't do it once. Sure, she's SITTING next to a loom but she's never actually weaving.
Instead of the new dogshit Odyssey film you should watch Iphigenia (1977). It’s made by actual Greek people and focuses on a mother-daughter relationship to explore how women are sacrificed by powerful men in times of war. Also the main actress has the face of an angel 🙏 the whole movie is available on YT with English subtitles.
i thought the “this is the face that launched a thousand ships, although now it would maybe be five-hundred.” line was just an internet joke but apparently that's a line Menelaus actually says in Nolan's Odyssey??
Not only that the language itself sounds straight out of a marvel forcibly funny haha moment, but Menelaus? The Menelaus who all thoughout human history, from Homer, to Sappho, to Euripides, to Virgil, to Shakespeare, to Brooke, to Barth; from Classical vases to Medieval poetry to Reinessance art, has been known as the man whose sword fell from his hands at the sight of his wife after 10 years apart?
"What joy for me to hold my wife" Menelaus?
"He flung the sword away, and kissed her feet" Menelaus?
"I believe all. I understand nothing. I love you" Menelaus?
"I have no fault to find; my wife, he daughter of Zeus and Leda, is mine again, she whom her brothers on their snow-white steeds, whilst torches blazed, made my happy bride, but gods removed her from my home." Menelaus?
The Menelaus who was picked out of the suitors by Helen herself? The Menelaus who couldn't kill a begging Trojan so his brother had to do it for him? The Menelaus who rescued Odysseus and got out Patroclus' body? The Menelaus who volounteered to fight Paris one on one so everybody could go home? Who kept expressing his guilt about himself being the cause of war through every assembly he spoke at in the Iliad? Who after 10 years away at Troy, took his wife through a 7-year long journey at sea back home, where he reinstated her as the queen of Sparta? Who wept like a child in front of Telemachus recalling the war and his brother and all the friends he lost and the only consolation being his wife' gentle hand on his?
You want me to believe that man scarred Helen's face and called her only worth half the ships because of it?
I'm actually physically sick just thinking about it.
If THE modern translator of the OG Odyssey text wrote this about my film adaptation I’d kill myself

I think we should figure out what age we’re living in now so we can say how it’s collapsing to each other
