I find it so hard to read as an adult, and a big part of it is picking something to read. I miss being bored in a school period or being trapped in the library for an hour with nothing else but to grab any book that peaked my interest and get inevitably engulfed in it. (Also the designated reading time. That was the other big part.)

Honestly pokemon is the ideal universe not just because thereâs cute animals that are your life companions, but because they have walkable cities and adequate biking infrastructure
The cute creatures are cool but you know what I like the international High-speed rail, the car lite cities, the popularity of biking as transit and the Walkable human scaled design of the towns, pokemon's popularity is proof of the way urbanism improves quality of living. Ask any 10 year old if they would rather live in the US or the Johto Region from pokemon and you'll find out how well the cities of pokemon are designed

My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.
This sounds fake but the logic behind it is actually really interesting? She said obsession with a new fandom triggers quick dopamine release when we consume all this related content--it's easy and addictive.
What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.
So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.
Moral of the story is you should engage in the process of creation around your favorite things. You'll feel better for it.

I do wish that âoppositional sexismâ was a more commonly known term. It was coined as part of transmisogyny theory, and is defined as the belief that men and women, are distinct, non-overlapping categories that do not share any traits. If gender was a venn diagram, people who believe in oppositional sexism think that âmenâ and âwomenâ are separate circles that never touch.
The reason I think that itâs a useful term is that it helps a lot with articulating exactly why a lot of transphobic people will call a cis man a girl for wearing nail polish, then turn around and call a trans woman a man. Both of those are enforcement of man and woman as non-overlapping social categories. Itâs also a huge part of homophobia, with many homophobes considering gay people to no longer really belong to their gender because they arenât performing it to their satisfaction.
Itâs a large part of the reason behind arguments that men and women canât understand each other or be friends, and/or that either men or women are monoliths. If men and women have nothing in common at all, it would be difficult for them to understand each other, and if all men are alike or all women are alike, then it makes sense to treat them all the same. Enforcing this rift is particularly miserable for women and men in close relationships with each other, but is often continued on the basis that âIf Iâm not a real man/woman, they wonât love me anymore.â
One common âprogressiveâ form of oppositional sexism is an idea often put as the âdivine feminineâ, that women are special in a way that men will never understand. Itâs meant to uplift women, but does so in ways that reinforce the idea that men and women are fundamentally different in ways that can never be reconciled or transcended. Thereâs a reason this rhetoric is hugely popular among both tradwifes and radical feminists. It argues that there is something about women that men will never have or know, which is appealing when you are trying to define womanhood in a way that means no man is or ever has been a part of it.
Youâll notice that nonbinary people are sharply excluded from the definition. This doesnât mean it doesnât apply to them, it means that oppositional sexism doesnât believe nonbinary people of any kind exist. Itâs especially rough on multigender people who are both men and women, because the whole idea of it is that men and women are two circles that donât overlap. The idea of them overlapping in one person is fundamentally rejected.
I think itâs a very useful term for talking about a lot of the problems that a lot of queer people face when it comes to trying to carve out a place for ourselves in a society that views any deviation from rigid, binary categories as a failure to perform them correctly.
If I can add, oppositional sexism is a cornerstone of evangelicalism and honestly a whole bunch of other forms of Christianity. The idea women and men exist for different tasks is deeply religious but specifically in the US and I assume for the majority of tradwives evangelical/conservative christian dogma. So even when ppl who proport to be somewhere feminist start up divine feminine shit theyâre regurgitating the same talking points the religious right started doing.

take figures out of their boxes btw. sew patches on your favorite jacket. go to bed with your favorite plushes. wear the pants you usually save for special occasions. draw something cool on your wall. put a sticker on your laptop. dye your hair and pierce your lips. glass is meant to break, metal is meant to rust. items are meant to be used. that's how the world knows that somebody loved them.
When my aunt died of covid, we had to clean out a lot of stuff that she was saving. Foods she was going to try, she was a great chef, spices she'd never opened or only used sparingly, lotions and bath things she hadn't used. After she died I started making a point of using things up: the good vanilla that has to be imported, that we finally found more of, we'd used barely an ounce before she passed away. Even though we love it. I just got my family new bottles of it for Christmas because we used one up. We enjoyed that happiness. Sometimes I still get the impulse to wait for something special, or awful, to save nice things for celebration or comfort. The phrase that always echoes in my mind is "use the good vanilla". And I have been (burning the candles, squirting the body wash, dissolving the bath bombs, putting the saffron in things). And it's been great. Use the good vanilla.

The easiest way to find a train lesbian is by either going to a lesbian bar in Boston or taking the Northeast Regional between Boston and Providence. Do not approach train lesbians in a car, they will see this as a threat and are capable of biting, and kicking.
