They did NOT need to make this scene this fucking funny
no op i enjoy ur post but i think the thing that let me down the most for vote2 in the anime (other than the expressions being better in the manga in 698 imo) as opposed to the manga is that during this scene sasuke is fucking SCREAMING in the manga
i remember when this chapter came out someone said they were looking forward to hearing sasukes screams as he tries to do what he deep down doesnt want to do and kill naruto and theres no doubt in my mind both sasukes voice actors wouldve sold it and while i get they were trying to have a poignant silence, the lack of verbal speech DOES make the whole scene feel kind of silly like op said.
idk i think its so crazy and epic and insane that sasuke in this moment is so fucking upset and agonized that his usual veil of detachment is completely gone to the point that he feels like he has to scream to convey how he feels and he cant even try to cover it up hes like super vulnerable here in the manga and then they remove that in the anime and its kind of disappointing :(

Thank you for post. It always felt suspicious to me. Why did Sasuke keep on asking Naruto why he cared about him. I feel the lines between family and romance are blurred like can be seen in this monologue. What is your take on it? It comes off different to western viewers as it does to Japanese viewers.

I believe you are referring to this post, you are welcome.
I don't think the Japanese version of the monologue reads much differently from the English version.
Japanese literature has a lot of differentiating tropes associated with Familial and Romantic love but you will also find that the latter is made analogous to the former one on multiple occasions. Perhaps one of the best examples is The Makioka Sisters where the romantic relationships are contrasted with the close bonds between the sisters, sometimes blurring the line between sibling loyalty and the expectations of romantic partnerships.
Historically, familial love is deeply tied to Confucian ideals of filial piety and loyalty. It is shown through duty ; there is an emphasis on sense of obligations and honor of the family. In contrast, romantic love is associated with individual emotions, passion, and heightened emotional intensity. Romantic love also often clashes with one's duty and obligations
Sasuke's pursuit of revenge is driven by his sense of justice and love for his clan, it is his duty. Sasuke's love for Naruto is described as something he finds comfort in, dwells on, and indulges in; it becomes a distraction to his duty. Despite being compared to family, the love Sasuke has for Naruto doesn't have the elements that would be associated with familial love, quite the contrary.
Even in non-blood-related fraternal relationships, there is an emphasis on loyalty, fealty, and duty toward each other. In contrast, Naruto and Sasuke's actions towards each other are shown to be emotionally driven and out of instinct.
And I do not need to restate how emotionally intense and passionate, their relationship is.
like that awkward moment where u can pinpoint exactly where the series was beyond saving and it was waterfall of truth when naruto rejected and repressed his own anger
Yo literally what the fuck are you talking about he did not
-reject
or
-repress
his anger. He accepted it as a part of himself and I thought that was extremely apparent with the merge of the hug. He /attempted/ to reject and repress his hate through fighting and that obviously didn’t work. The conclusion of this scene was literally meeting his hurt with love and understanding. this scene showed tremendous emotional intelligence to me. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Naruto saw how his hatred had helped him stay alive and become strong but that now it was causing more harm than good. This is an essential understanding and a part of everyone’s development into adulthood.
this a lot of hostility for what is just essentially restating what the story tells you to accept at face value
naruto’s “hate” (justified mistrust of ppl who discriminated against him) was not harming anyone, and he was not taking his anger out on innocent people. he was uncomfortable that someone who had previously hated him for existing was now hero worshipping him and asking for his autograph because he became an asset to the village. his “dark” self, which was just his trauma personified, pointed out to him that his worth was being determined by his contributions. his response was, word for word, that he would become the man they believe he is. aka make it his aim to live up to their expectations/reconfiguration of him as their savior. aka continually allow his contributions to determine his worth. real, effective self love means letting go of destructive anger but still demanding some basic accountability and setting boundaries…like, you do not have to give autographs and passively enable idolization you’re uncomfortable with.
just because something is portrayed as a positive development doesn’t mean everyone is going to interpret it as such. some people thought this scene was inspiring, others see it differently. it’s not that baffling.
He does get nightmares sometimes but nothing a snuggle can't fix!

The most unrealistic part of Naruto is that no one ever teases sasunaru for the academy kiss. As someone who survived middle school I can confidently say that’s bullying material that will last to high school
if you take Naruto as a story focusing on Naruto and Sasuke's relationship and take everything else as a little background to their love story and consider that it all ended on chapter 698
then honestly it's rather brilliant
