I just would like to start by saying this isn’t about me trying to justify why I ship something. Ships are subjective and something done for fun, trying to explain yourself why you ship something is like trying to explain yourself in why you like certain foods, certain shows or your hobbies, its optional and not something that should ever be pressured out of you. What you ship in fiction does in no way reflect your true self, morality or ideal relationship in real life.
Now with that out of the way.
There’s been plenty of answers of why some of us ship Charlistor in the Hazbin Hotel tag, ranging from their dynamics, shared sense of humor, to their height difference or just overall their designs look appealing together, which are all wonderful responses.
I personally did some thinking as to why I found the ship so appealing and I may have reached a slightly different conclusion. Mainly it all boils down to Charlie’s hope in her dream from the most unlikely place.
After the disaster that was the live news broadcast she tries to remain optimistic that things will be okay. But between becoming the laughingstock of her own people, her friends fighting each other, she knows her father doesn’t have a high opinion of her and her mom is too busy to answer her calls. There’s nobody giving her the reassurance that she needs that maybe things will turn out fine.
She fast reaching rock bottom and there’s nobody there to catch her even while surrounded by people she loves. Something we can all relate to.
So who does show up in her time of need? Probably the least likely person she was ever expecting.
Don’t get me wrong, I know Alastor is NOT there to help her. If anything he is there as a spectator to watch her rapid downfall. But despite this there’s a sort of symbiotic relationship that forms between the two in the short time they spend together.
By forming a contract with him, Charlie would most likely lower down her standing in their forming partnership and they would no longer be equals. He would be at a advantage over her. Literally making a deal with the devil, and we all know how well those usually turn out in narratives.
BUT she refuses to make a deal with him.
Despite her naive disposition Charlie is not a fool and refuses the deal. She instead gives Alastor the choice to help with her project and watch over it and by doing so remains a equal to him without any other ties. And thus a symbiotic relationship is formed. Charlie receives the help she needs to keep up her dream, and Alastor will no longer be bored.
He was definitely impressed by this move on her part, and maybe develops a bit of respect for her.
Charlie is finally seeing progress and her disposition quickly changes and she is back on track with her goal.
Again, coming from the most unlikely of places.
It is an interesting dynamic and I am excited to see where the creator may take it in the future.
