My oh my, it certainly has been awhile tumblr. Almost two years, to be precise. It’s mostly been because I’ve jumped shipped over to dayre, which is a much more convenient way to chronicle the life and times of this boring teen on the cusp of adulthood it seems. Still, you’re nice for when I want to sit down and type nice, long paragraphs i.e. rambles, since dayre does this annoying thing where text posts are limited to 200 words per post, although there’s no limit how many posts you’re allowed a day.
You are by and large the platform I’ve used the longest to memorialise my days. Hopefully in a decade or two I’ll be able to look back upon you fondly instead of silently cringing like I do now.
So updates.
Well, 2015 was for the most part peaceful and pleasant. I worked part-time at a shop and got to spend time with friends and family alike, especially the latter, which brought me so much closer to them. Had you asked me if I were a family person two years ago, I’d have given an entirely different answer than I would now. I got to spend a day with my grandparents once a week; I learnt cycling and the fam and I would go to east coast nearly every week to do a few kilometres; I met with joc and ps almost every other week as well, bonding over cafe food, board games and right before I left, escape room adventures. In sort, I did nothing, but I also did everything. In not having a serious commitment like a full-time job or school, my schedule was free for me to do as I pleased and do as I pleased I did. Although I didn’t accomplish anything worthy of boast, I did get to reconnect with the people in my life who mattered to me and that was more than enough.
Did you also notice how I teased about my leaving somewhere in that last paragraph? Well crazy as it sounds, I’m in the UK now for uni. Four years ago, I’d been planning to apply to the states to study film. It’s weird the directions life takes us, but I’d like to believe there is some sense threading these decisions of my life together i.e. the big plan. I might not believe in jesus, but I do believe in fate and the universe and that things happen for a reason, but also no reason at all.
The UK has been good to me. My small, sleepy town is good for its quiet and peace, shattered only by my party-crazy colleagues, which are very many. London though, is expensive but very comforting. Not the least because I have a wonderful friend there who is basically family, but also because it reminds me so much of Singapore. I’d never realised how much of a city girl I was and still am, but one of those sayings “you are where you grew up” is so true. Speaking of sayings, it’s strange how your predecessors can proffer you all the advice in the world, but some things just don’t hit you until you’re put in the situation and you’re ready to accept them.
Anyway, it’s all been good fun. I stay home a lot. I study some. But mostly, I nua. The fam came over in December and we went to Paris and Brussels, which were such a treat, and then back here again. They left me shortly before Christmas and then I embarked on another journey, this time to Berlin, Dresden and Prague. Came back for the spring term and left to explore the West of the UK, discovering my favourite castle by far - Windsor Castle, seeing the Stonehenge, visiting a town trapped in time called Lacock (lay-cock), and a taking a whistle-stop tour of Bath. I’m due for Scotland at the end of the month which I am rather excited for, since this trip I got to plan well ahead of time.
Yet ironically, I began this post wanting to document my experience of going out to Q last night with some of my contemporaries. ‘Twas a wild night - I never had so much fun dancing, got to step out of my comfort zone and try new things and also met a bunch of really fun people. In short, I was lucky that a clubbing experience had been so good. Tell the me a couple years ago that and I’d have snickered at you.
