Fiction effects reality, it sure as hell effected me. The fiction I was exposed to led me into kink spaces before I was even a teenager (I have always been a passive spectator, I did not interact. I knew not to for my own safety. Not everyone understands that though). It led me into believing things that were incredibly harmful were normal, and I enjoyed it. I was exposed to YBC when I was either 10 or 11 and I didn't see anything wrong with it. It made me believe that those things were okay.
I no longer believe such things, I have realised now that they are vile, however being exposed to things while in a vulnerable state (either due to age, mental disability, or mental illness), can lead to the normalization of harmful topics. Normalization of sexual harassment, pro-contact paras, etc.
I got into spaces I shouldn't have too early and I am still recovering from the impact.
Fiction does effect reality and it is ignorant to think otherwise. I am coming from personal experience.
Examples outside of my own experience:
The normalization of pedophilia in media, especially in East Asia, has led to some terribly pedophilic beauty standards and the normalization of men behaving creepily towards younger looking people, especially women.
Books like Haunting Adeline (which I have read most of the way through) normalize rape by framing it in a "sexy" manner. This has been so normalized by dark fantasy and dark romance spaces, especially through BookTok. This has led to teenagers reading adult book. This has led to a desensitization that has leaked out into the real world. These people see rape as the victim's fault, they see people dressing confidently and believe that they are ASKING to be assaulted, they see men getting sexually harassed and don't bat an eye because of the normalization.
I understand using fiction to cope with trauma, or if you have a paraphilia and fiction as a way to cope, hence why these things are on AO3 and I have nothing against these things being on AO3 because if you find them then it's for one of two reasons. 1, you ignored the tags, or 2, you were specifically looking for it. These things should be limited in public media, and should be kept in safe-guarded spaces where younger people and otherwise impressionable people cannot find it, as it can genuinely harm them.
Fiction effects reality, but when used in more private or limited spaces as a coping mechanism the circumstances change. That is my final stance.

It's like when neurotypical people steal the words 'overstimulated' and 'vocal stim.' Those aren't terms that are made for you, because you literally don't experience those things if you don't have those disorders. Endogenic systems do not experience DID/OSDD and therefore should not be fucking allowed to use MEDICAL terms made for ACTUAL systems that are CLINICALLY recognised to have a TRAUMA/DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER.
If you don't have DID/OSDD, you can't have alters. You can't have fictives, you can't have factives, you can't have prosecutors, you can't have protectors, you can't have littles/syskids, you can't have memory holders and you absolutely fucking CANNOT under NO circumstance have persecutors. You just want an excuse for your pathetic behaviour.

I think both anti and pro endos should start calling out the issues in their own communities more. Very often there are legitimate problems in both communities that ate dismissed because a majority of people who are calling out said issues come from the other side. But making both of our communities safer will be much easier when it’s a joint effort.
