THE CHAOS OF STANDING STILL BY JESSICA BRODY!! (This review is from June of 2020, but I reread this book and I wanted to post about it because I love it so much) This book was absolutely, wonderfully written. It made me laugh, it made me want to cry, it made me want to never stop reading. It was... beautiful. While some moments were very emotional and tense, you never felt like it was too much. The main character, Ryn, is stuck at the Denver International Airport on New Years Eve. More than anything, she wants to get home before tomorrow. She NEEDS to get home before tomorrow. But she is in the middle of the biggest blizzard in 100 years. When she accidentally switches phones with a boy in a muppets shirt, she gets the chance to make the most of a horrible situation. As I’ve already stated, I absolutely loved this book. It made me feel all of the emotions. Every single one one of them. As you may be able to tell, I absolutely loved this book! It was funny, romantic, lighthearted, and a thoroughly enjoyable read! I’ve been super excited to be able to share this book with you. The characters were wonderful, and I loved the amount of focus put on all of Liz’s relationships, between her friendship, her relationship with her family, and with Mack. It made each individual character more complex, and also made Liz feel more and more realistic. I feel like this is especially true about her relationships with Jordan and Gaby. I desperately need everyone on earth to read this right now. RULE OF WOLVES BY LEIGH BARDUGO!!! Wow. Just wow. This book slowly, but methodically killed me and I loved every minute of it. I got to see like all of my favorite characters from the Grishaverse and the ending was so wonderful I can’t even put it into words. SAM ANS ILSA’S LAST HURRAH BY RACHEL COHN AND DAVID LEVITHAN!!! I started reading this my freshman year of high school. Around the middle of the book, I stopped reading and decided that I would wait to read the book till my senior year. Then I promptly forgot all about the book until about a week before graduation. I knew I had to keep this promise to freshman me. So, after 4 years, I finally read Sam and Ilsa’s Last Hurrah. Sam and Ilsa are twins that’s seem like they couldn’t be more different. Their grandmother lets them throw amazing dinner parties as a break from the humdrum. They always invite an interesting group, but for their final dinner party the guests seem extra unusual. These 6 party guests help Sam and Ilsa realize new things about their future and each other. I really enjoyed this book and all it’s crazy characters. I did have a couple of minor issues with the book, like the fact that this Liberace themed party only seemed to mildly be themed, but all in all I thought it was lots of fun, and also somewhat relatable. THE COSSACKS BY LEO TOLSTOY!!! Olenin, a wealthy orphan, is tired of his life in Moscow, so he joins the army and is sent to the Caucasus. During his time there, he falls in love with nature, the Cossacks and their culture, and a girl in the village. But she is betrothed to another man. This is a classic love triangle, but is also clearly about connection with the earth. I love Tolstoy, but many of his works are huge and daunting. This one was much more manageable, at 161 pages. It was really fun to read, but I also feel like it’s important to know a little bit about the Cossacks. This version included some historical context in the introduction that Tolstoy did not include. VICTORIES GREATER THAN DEATH BY CHARLIE JANE ANDERS!!! Tina knows she will leave earth. She is the clone of an intergalactic hero and will leave earth and have the memories of her clone restored. But when that finally happens, things don’t quite go to plan. This book has an amazing premise and a ton of amazing queer rep, but there are SO MANY CHARACTERS. It was confusing to say the least. The book also seemed to have really slow pace that did pick up in the end. Lots of the other aspects of the book were amazing, and the characters that I could keep track of were really great. The villain was terrifying. How do you live with a murderer? Well, you make yourself useful, and you bide your time until you can escape. After her mother’s death, Bree begins attending the UNC Chapel Hill Early College and stumbles across a secret society that may be able to answer some lingering questions she has about her mother’s death.
