Gamer? I Hardly Know 'Er!

Genuinely one of the most gut-wrenching stories I have seen recently (and I'm still recovering from Bojack Horseman). It is fucking brilliant.

I started the game feeling like it was slow as fuck. I was super annoyed. Then it grew on me. I got all cozy and ready for a slowburn romance.

How oblivious I was.

I think that's why the game was so brilliant. It did such a good job at pacing. First we establish a routine (going to do the trial). It's pretty mundane at first. I became fond of Lee around the middle of the trials. The author (creator?) could have easily went wrong writing Lee. He could have made him out to be unflawed and perfect to exaggerate the "perfect guy" archetype, but keeping him a bit awkward but endearing and compassionate was a great choice.

All of that just to hit you with the sucker punch that is The Shrine. I was soooooo fucking gagged. AND THEN IT GOES DEEPER? AND THEN THE GUY IN THE BASEMENT??? Bitchhhhh. Got me sooooooo fucked up.

I like how the author didn't do the cliche "here's who I REALLY am" trope (a la Danganronpa switch ups. No shade to Danganronpa!) You learn more about Lee, yes, but he doesn't stray from his character or have his personality drastically change. It makes your reaction to the reveal even more intense because of the internal conflict you as the viewer have about him (or at least I did.)

I ended up getting the ending where the move in together, haven't looked at the other ending yet.

I also like how realistic the game was, but also kinda sad. I could tell from the beginning that this game wasn't gonna have a happy ending and was kind of preemptively sad but the game had a stellar ending!

I also enjoy the interesting effect the monsters and the "egg" they hatch out of have. A sort of mind fuckery. It's interesting how it seems to dig up everyone's past regrets. I also think it may be a joint consciousness somehow? This theory really came to me because in the DLC when Mhairi almost dies and sees her father, she looks back and sees everyone else who died on the Beira.
