*a child is sitting on a leftover bit of rubble, coughing violently*
@the-button-gang
Hey, are you all right?
He hurries over to check on the child.
*hisses and jerks backwards, nearly falling off the rubble*
Kaladin dives forward to catch him.
*jerks away, biting his hand*
He restrains the urge to pull away, since that could hurt the kid.
I'm sorry. I didn't intend to startle you.
*squirms out of his arms, glaring at him* What's the big idea?
I didn't want you to fall.
I woulda been *coughing* fine.

*Cricket hugs him*
@the-button-gang
*takes it awkwardly* I... Thank you, kid...
*muffled* You saved Joey.
I did what I could for him. I hope it was enough.
You got him out.

*muffled* You saved Joey.
*Dipshit stands near Wayne, shifting nervously*
@the-button-gang
... hey, kid. Please don't tell me the world's ending again today, I ain't even had breakfast yet. *winks*
*strolling down the street, hands in his pockets* You're lucky. So many fun clothes in Elendel. I had to steal Lessie 'n Wax's stuff when I was your age. And Wax's pants are real long.
*snorts* He’s rusting tall.
I used to hope I'd grow some more to catch up, but miracles don't happen.
... least not the ones you ask for.
What kinda disguises can you do?
*Joey is in the doorway the next morning, still looking haggard* I need to explain what happened while it’s still fresh.
@the-button-gang
Alright. *nods* Take a seat. I'll have some tea brought in.
*he prepares a notebook and picks up a pen*
*Mick follows him into the room and sits down. He and Joey have a rapid sign conversation, but seem to come to an agreement.
*Joey’s eyes are distant, but his voice is almost too steady, only occasionally wavering* It started when I decided to look through their employee records. Someone slid a note under the door, asking to meet beneath the statue of the Hero at midnight. As I left the room, William - the guy who’d been following me - was there, dropping some cryptic hints about how he wanted to see how my journey turned out. I wasn’t able to go that night because of the explosion, but I went the next chance I got.
*he takes a moment to collect his thoughts, seeming to get more distant* I met him that night. His name was Nick. He was terrified. Talking about how they were creating monsters. He said that they were making a play for a Shard. He was about to tell me something about Bennett, something they didn’t want anyone to know. *he takes a deep breath, his voice wavering* They shot him before he could say it.
*he writes diligently, brow furrowed in concern, but not daring to interrupt, saving the comfort for later*
I came into work again. William was there, offering me a cup of rum. Said that he wasn’t a player in this, that he just liked to watch, but that they’d pissed him off. He’d requested they not lay a finger on me and he considered shooting a man in front of me a violation of that. I’d wondered why they hadn’t shot me. He offered me the CEO position, saying I could find out more information than he could and they’d be too busy tryin’ to influence me to be suspicious.
*pauses, underlines something, nods*
I asked him what the chances were of me gettin’ away if I chose to leave now, and what the chances were of keepin’ the boys safe. He said that if I walked away now, there was a pretty good chance they’d let me go and not touch the boys. I asked how likely it was I’d get someone else killed if I stayed, he said that I could do some good but I’d have to be careful.
I decided to walk away. He said that he understood, but that he knew more about me than they did, and if they found out about my connections then things would go poorly for me. *bitterly* Either William was a liar, or they found out.
... will you tell them not to overwhelm him, if they can? He'll need... some time.
I will. They’re surprisingly good at that. *Joey’s brow furrows and he murmurs something in his sleep. Mick strokes his hair back, sighing*
*he reaches out to put a hand on Mick's shoulder* It's hard to see him like this. I know. But- I promise you that he can get better. Even if it won't seem that way sometimes.
I know. I seen him like this before, but not this bad. But Joey’s strong.

*Shoestring scratches his head* We’re s’pposed to be layin’ low for a while, but I’ll see what we can do.
Oh well, if it's unsafe for you, please don't! Safety is the number one priority of the disaster preparations office.
We’ll pass the word around soon’s we can.

*Joey suddenly feels something. For a brief moment, as the sensation hits him, he remembers his spike. Then it slips away from his mind, leaving him only with the sudden urge to step outside and find somewhere quiet.*
-@coinshot-insurance-agency
*he blinks, sitting up. Mick, sitting nearby and reading a book, frowns* Joey, you alright?
I- yeah. *he rubs his head* Just... gonna step outside for a bit. Need some air.
*Mick nods, concerned* Alright. Be careful.
*dry smile* I get kidnapped one time and I'm some kind of invalid? *his smile fades as Mick doesn't smile back* Alright. I'll be careful.
*Joey steps outside, finding a quiet place to sit*
*as he sits, Joey starts to slip away from himself. Drifting off into the depths of his mind. Then, he hears a voice stepping forward from the shadows*
Hello, Joey. Or maybe you have a different name. I never do quite know how you guys work. *the woman has a friendly and relaxed demeanor. She looks rather young, but she's armed with two long-barreled handguns at her hip and seems like she'd know how to use them.*
*he sits up, his eyes glinting* No. Not Joey. I… don’t know who I am. What’s happening?
*she smiles at him* Well, not Joey, this is where I give you a job! How does that sound?
*narrows eyes* What's in it for me?
*she leans against a railing* I heard you like intrigue! Sneaking around and the like. How would you like to be a spy? We can pay you as well.
How much?
You know how much you made in the mines in a year? We can offer you that much every week. Provided you continue to deliver, of course.
*smiling* Now we're talkin'.
*she grins at him* What do you say, then? You give us information on the Ghostbloods, what they're up to, where their safe houses are, maybe do some sabotage here and there, and we pay you. Well.
That I can do.
You... made me somehow, didn't you? I didn't exist before. Except maybe I did. Somewhere in the corners.
*she gives him a winning smile* Not me! That'd be Leanne!
I'm not really sure what she did, but she brought you out of Joey! Now you're you!
So I'm not Joey. I'm the... not-Joey. Anti-Joey. Yeoj. Yo-Yo. Yeah, that works. Yo-Yo.
*grins* Heya Yo-Yo, I'm Lily! *sticks out a hand* You and I are going to be working together for a while! I'm your contact!
*shakes her hand, giving her his most charming smile* Good to meet you, Lily. How's this going to work?
Whelp, you're meant to place dead drops for us roughly every week or so. You'll know where. But not on a regular time table. Stagger it. Don't be predictable.
If you need to meet with me, go out for some air and accidentally leave a lantern on. I'll find you.
Oh, and I'm supposed to tell you... *she blushes a little* my codename's Far Shot. Word to the wise, if they ask you to shoot something, fudge your skills a bit. People get real weird when you hit a rabbit at 150 yards with iron sights on a handgun. *she shrugs* Not sure why.
Tricky part might be getting away from the boys, they’re pretty damn worried. We might not have long before Mick decides to come looking.
*smile* Always keep somethin’ in reserve so you can surprise ‘em.
We could arrange distractions for you if you would like. Something subtle that would allow you to sneak away. Worms, maybe. Boys like worms, right? Or perhaps you could take up smoking. My dad used to always slip off so he could smoke.
Ah... might be a bit late for that for me, Yo-Yo...
They like worms, but wouldn’t choose worms over Joey. Smokin’… nah, might aggravate Cricket. I’ll think of somethin’.
*snorts* Well, now you know. I’m sure you got somethin’ else you can hit ‘em with.
Whelp, you can figure it out, Yo-Yo! I'm sure!
Hmm... *she shrugs* maybe... I'm a pretty open book, to be honest. What y'see is what you get, pretty much.
Everyone’s got a secret. Maybe you just ain’t found yours yet.
*she grins at him* Pretty darn good secret then, isn't it!?
I been in Joey’s head for about a day and I’m already findin’ shit he don’t know about. Say, what kinda drops am I doing?
Not sure if I want to go about finding mine the way you did, Yo-Yo. I think Joey's been having a rather rough time lately.
Just something inconspicuous. Note in a walnut or a rock that we pick up later. That sorta thing.
*nodding* Progress reports, updates, that sort of thing?
Mhm! What you did, what you found out, what you're worried about. Anything you think is relevant!
*grins* I’m gonna need a new cipher.
*she returns his grin* You have fun with that, Yo-Yo! *she nudges him* You should probably get Joey back inside before your boys get worried, though. I don't have any worms on me right now to distract them.
Will do. See you around, Far Shot. *he waves to her before heading off*
*as he nears the house Yo-Yo retreats, sending Joey to the front again. Joey just stands there, blinking, seemingly unaware of his surroundings*
*Mick frowns, coming outside* Joey? You alright?
*Joey startles* How… long was I standing there?
Dunno, mate. *his frown deepens, concern in his eyes* A while. Let’s get you inside.

*a teenage boy with long brown hair waves a broadsheet at you* Buy a sheet, miss?
@the-button-gang
*nods, not saying anything, while her brain looks for words*
How. Umm. Much.
*she's taking her purse out as words coalesce in her mind. She berates herself for trying to talk so fast before the plan had formed. Maybe she can get away with it if she says it again. She wasn't all that loud. Hopefully he didn't notice*
*louder, and smoothly*
Why yes, thank you for the offer. How much for a paper?
One clip!
*takes out a pair of clips and hands them over*
One for the paper and one for you.
Oh! Thanks, ma’am! *hands her the sheet*
*nods *
You are welcome.
*starts checking the paper for... the Incident *
Lot goin’ on in the city these days.
*(internally) look into eyes, 1,2, look back at paper so that it isn't weird, now response. Wait, Rusts, forgot to choose words*
*(externally) a small pause*
Yes, there is. Lot goin' on in the city these days.
*smile* You take care.
*smiles back*
Thank you. You too.
Name’s Dipshit. I’ll see you around.
*there's an involuntary and quickly stifled giggle at the name*
*partially trying to say "my name is" but also currently relying on the "basically repeat what others say strategy"*
Name's mine. Steris. Is. See ya. I'll.
*blinks*
My name is Steris. See you around, dipshit. Nice to meet you.
*grin* Nice to meet you, too.
*nods*
Nice to meet you too.
…say, you know any good bookstores?
*eyes go wide*
Yes of course!
*already going into her purse to take out notebook and pen and starting to write out a new list, including addresses, names of owners, principal books they carry, approximately how many books they carry, suppliers, etc.*

*nodding rapidly, trying to take it all in*
*In about forty minutes, while simultaneously nonstop talking, she has compiled a list of every bookstore, its pros and cons, and any other information you can possibly think of.*
*she tears out the dozen or so sheets of paper, takes out a stapler and staples them together*
Here you go.
Damn, that’s thorough.
…you should meet my friend sometime. I think he’d like you.
... sorry. I got excited. What did you need that for?
And are you sure your friend won't find me annoying?
My friend that I mentioned. He’s sick and I’m tryna cheer him up.
*grins* Nah. He puts up with me, after all.
*a hint of a smile passes over Steris over that last bit, and she's immediately self-conscious that she's half-smiling after being told someone is sick*
I'd love to meet him, Dipshit. Books cheer him up?
He loves reading anything he can get his hands on. He reads city records for fun.
Oh yes. City records are great.
I’ll have to introduce you when he’s doin’ better. Never met someone else who reads like he does.
Yes. Please do. Thank you.
I’ll see you around, then. And I’ll give that list to Joey. He’ll love it.
