This is definitely a post i’ve seen somewhere but it feels SO isolating to be fully anti-AI in today’s climate. Everyone I know uses it for work, my parents use it, my older family members. They use it like google, like a spreadsheet, like a script editor.
“Look at this AI tool that can change the tone of my message from casual to formal!” I can use different vocabulary words to do this. Not worth it.
“I ran it through ChatGPT to remove the background.” Photoshop exists. It’s easily pirated, too; and a good skill to have.
“I used ChatGPT to help me make my itinerary.” What about local knowledge? What about travel blogs, friends, magazines, brochures? And now it’s collected knowledge where you’re going, what you’re doing, when you’ll be there.
And it’s not just ChatGPT. Gemini, Claude, Freepik, whatever. So many people that have spent their lives invested in academia are now telling me they use AI almost every day, that’s it’s great.
There is no good AI.
Every time I’m suggested or invited to use AI for a task, I hate that I feel awkward declining when I know I would move mountains to avoid using it. “Why bother with doing it yourself?” Because it’s meaningful. Because it’s creative. Because it’s earnest, and communicative, and worth what they’re paying you. Worth what you’re paying to be taught.
It feels like people are throwing away skills that we are privileged to even have, for a tool that isn’t as good as we think it is. Haven’t I read this book before, about complacence and surveillance and having to learn the basics again because you used to rely on something for everything?
