Basically,

Rift was created by Zandik as a result of early testing for the creation of his segments prior to studying puppets.

In a way, Rift is a Dottore segment, albeit a very impure one. Impure to the point he has his own identity and does not share his full cognition with Zandik.

Rift was created in the process of testing the potential of Abyssal energy as a catalyst for creating a segment. He was inspired by studying the work of Rhinedottir.

Zandik combined a rat fetus with abyssal energy, a beta version of the immortality elixir, as well as a microscopic part of his soul and his blood. (He gave it his autism 😔)

Rift did not emerge fully formed and had to be raised artificially. It took about 5 years for him to mature into an adult form. Zandik probably made him in his late 40s? Maybe 50s? Man idk trying to write a numerical timeline with this man is painful

Rift grew dramatically and very quickly, this is a consequence of the abyssal energy. From being about like about 15 inches at year 1 to 9 feet tall at 5.

After reaching maturity, the RIFT experiment was technically closed. While Rift wasn't a successful segment, he did provide Zandik with valuable research.

Rift was kept in the Lab despite of technically being an ended experiment. Because Rift had utility. Though it is only half of the truth, but you couldn't torture the other half out of Zandik.

Rift became the Lab Keeper. Basically, he is the security system + maid + lab assistant + sentient test dummy.

He very rarely ever leaves the laboratory, he lives there, that is the only world he knows. He stalks around at night making sure things are in place. He helps with some manual tasks that dont require much dexterity. And then later on after Zandik successfully created the segments, Rift became a practice dummy for some of the younger segments to test things or practice surgeries on. Something the older segments, and specifically OG Zandik himself have mixed feelings on.

Cognition

Cognitively, Rift is neither human nor rat. He is both, he is his own species. He is Rift. He appears simple and animalistic on the surface, due to his posture, gate, appearence and tendency to be quiet, however he is a fully sentient and intelligent being. He is not a genius, but he is clever and very observant. His physical mannerisms are largely animalistic because his body facilitates this. Despite his intelligence he does still have very prominent instincts.

Most people get confused by it and dont know how to manage interactions with Rift. They dont know if they should treat it like an animal or a person. They assume he 'shifts' between modes of human or animal, but that is false. He doesn't fit neatly into either category because he is his own category.

He might lay under a table and chew on a stethoscope, but to him thats more similar to a human fidgeting with a pen while thinking than a dog absentmindedly chewing something.

The best advice for dealing him is besically to always speak with him like a person, and not pay attention to what he is doing physically. He isn't a 'human trapped inside a monsters form', he is just Rift.

Physiology

Rift can speak and comprehends human language perfectly, however vocalising it is a bit of a struggle for him. His vocal cords arent perfectly suited for human speech. His voice is scratchy and slow, he prefers speaking concisely in short sentences if possible. Look up voicelines for the Keepers from Bendy and The Dark Revival for reference, they sound a bit more sinister than he does cuz obviously they are from a horror game, but its pretty close.

Rifts body is somewhat fragile and unstable due to its origins. He is lucky to be alive at all, the 6 subjects before him didnt survive over 2 days. He requires consistant dietary supplements and maintenance. His body is covered in stitches and surgical scars, some from exploratory surgeries, some from medical ones.

He is sustained by an older beta version of the immortality elixir. Its a version that was used to create Rift, and even if it isnt a viable substance for anyone else, it does work on him. He is immortal as far as he keeps taking it.

Without upkeep from Dottore, Rift will eventually basically fall apart.

Psychology

Rift is very much attached to Zandik and the lab. It is the only world he knows, it is the only world he belongs in. Where else would a hulking, messed up rat creature fit in if not the lab full of equally messed up things?

He doesnt like leaving the lab, it makes him uneasy and anxious. As consequence of what he is and who he's made by, socialising very difficult and often unpleasant.

Rift is a willing test dummy. Because to him its normal. Being dissected is just part of life. He finds purpose in it. This acceptance is further helped by the fact Dottore isn't sadistic. Its clinical, professional. Rift is given time and aid to recover from whatever test was made. Obviously, on Dottores part this is largely just practicality. If the subject isnt recovered from a previous test the data from the next one will be tainted. But Rift perceives it as kindness of sorts, because its the only reference for it he has.

Their relationship is not something anyone would call healthy. Rift is heavily dependent on Zandik, and is used by him consistently. But it is more complicated than just another abused test subject story.

Rifts attachment to Zandik isn't entirly voluntary, considering as I have stated many times before, Zandik is all Rift knows. Zandik knows everything there is to know about Rift, literally. Which is both invasive, but to a creature that doesnt fit anywhere, that does bring a messed up sort of comfort. The lab is a place Rift belongs, he's accepted and understood there, allowed to exist as what he is.

Rift and Zandik both offer eachother unconditional understanding. Rift will accept, endure, and understand whatever Zandik does. Zandik will understand and not police Rifts 'animalistic' behaviour.

I do believe that, with time, Zandik did also get attached to Rift. Because Rift offers him that unconditional understanding, because he literally raised it from infancy, because its just consistently around. There is no judgement he can receive from Rift.

He doesnt become some sentimental affectionate grandpa, obviously, this is Zandik. He doesn't stop the younger segments from dissecting Rift. But he does prescribe longer rests after tests. He constantly checks Rifts bandages. He will have a million 'practical reasons' as to why Rift shouldn't be moved or euthanized despite being a scrapped experiment. Because this is Zandik. And the only way he can express any sort of affection is strictly practical, or atleast rationalised as practical.

Not aggressive or possessive, but more in the sense he will be saddened hearing people talk shit about him. He wouldn't hesitate to protect Zandik from danger if needed. Rift would hiss at subboardinates that try to move something that belongs to Zandik.

He does pick favorites with the segments, his choice being 45 and 65. He does like 8 too, however spending time with him gets overwhelming because that is an absolute menace and curiosity hurricane of a child and Rift is a lab rat.

18 is his least favorite, he doesn't fully know how to react with bitter teen Zandik.

35 is the one that unsettles Rift the most due to his determination and selfishness, which hasn't been dulled by age.

Generally, Rift prefers 45 and 65 because those are closest to the Zandik he knows, since he didn't exist for the earlier ones, so neither he nor they have memories of eachother. Og Zandik is 100% the favorite, though. Easy to say, he was not doing well when OGs heart skill-issued.

Ending.

After Zandik died Rift was pretty much the devastating image of a dog waiting for its human to come back. He would sleep under Zandiks desk, still bring him tea daily for weeks, and constantly check his usual spots. He even braved the halls of Zapolaryny palace in his grief, making the trek to Feofans office. Because Feofan was associated with Zandik more than the segments. Feofan still smelled like Zandik. He saw Zandik trust Feofan, he was probably the only other person that Rift interacted with consistently and that accepted him.

After the sumeru mission, Rifts world was destroyed even further. After 35 erased all the other segments, Rift grew both uneasy, maybe even slightly resentful and yet strongly attached to 35. Because now 35 is the only thing left of Zandik.

Rift hated being alone in the lab. That was rarely a reality he experienced, because atleast 1 Dottore was always in the lab. Now, when 35 went out to the field? Rift was alone. When he was in pain, he'd go and nap on the operating table instinctively, because thats where the doctor would fix him.

And Rift would stay alone, for we all know what happens to Omega.

After Dottore fully dead, Rift was left alone in the lab. Yes, Feofan was still there, but feofan is grieving and isnt Zandik. Feofan won't fix Rifts broken bones. Feofan won't specially mix and combine medication tailored to Rits physiology. Feofan wont bring all the familiar comforts that Rift had, the comforts which would horrify anyone on the outside.

after Dottores death Rift becomes extremely defensive of the lab. He wouldn't let anyone inside. He's never been aggressive before, but now hes growling and hissing at anyone that tries to enter.

One grieving, devastated, angry at nothing yet everything creature that is becoming more animal than person as a consequence of processing such devistating emotions, stalking the large empty laboratory of its creator.

Of course, it probably wouldn't be an issue for a long time.

The Lab is a massive facility that is now of no use, full of expensive equipment and valuable research. It will be invaded. It will be clean out. It will be either given to Sandrone, or repurposed completely.

And Rift cant really do anything about it.

It might keep subboardinates away for a few weeks.

But eventually the Tsaritsa, or Pierro, or Pulccinella will have enough.

Rift is large and scary looking, but he isn't some magical barrier. He can be taken out of the equation with enough man power.

And the tragedy is that no one will see the grief. Because who would ever assume grief in the aggressive creature growling and snapping at people. It is just the messed up monster behaving like the messed up monster it is cuz it was made by a messed up monster of a scientist.

Maybe Feofan would step in, maybe not, I have not decided the ending of his story yet because it just makes me too sad if im honest :(

No sadness, no one dies, Zandik and Feofan live happily ever after with their messed-up dog-son.

Sooo Its been a while huh- I've been quite dead on here for months now, sorry bout that T-T things in life got a little too hectic for me for a bit there, but now I am free for the summer, so here I am!
