TGC Collective

We are very sad to announce that TGC Collective is coming to an end this year.

 After eight years working together to showcase women comic artists in Scotland, it's time to move on to new projects and new collaborations.

We'd like to thank everyone who's ever contributed to the collective with their art, stories and friendship. We'd also like to thank all the people who supported us along the way: buying our books, coming to our events and helping to spread the word.

Gill Hatcher said:

“After a lot of thinking I've decided to end TGC before the end of the year.

I first had the idea for an women’s comic anthology in 2009. I didn't know any female cartoonists so I pulled together some family and friends. I couldn't think of a good name so I called it 'Team Girl Comic'. I thought it would be a fun, one-off project. I never imagined it would become an established part of the Scottish comics scene, with dozens of contributors working together to collectively share their stories.

When TGC was at its best I was putting in hours of work every week. And when it was at its very best I also had lots of extra support from close friends. I'm especially grateful to Claire Yvette for all her hard work and enthusiasm when the comic was really taking off. Of course, TGC wouldn't exist without all the women who contributed their artwork and their stories, so I want to thank everyone in the collective for sharing their time and their talent with us.

For a while now, I've been finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the group, from promoting and selling the books to simply answering emails and Facebook messages. When I started TGC my life was quite different, and I simply can't keep up anymore. And I'm totally ok with that! It feels good to be moving on.

Despite these recent difficulties, TGC has been nothing but a positive force in my life. When things were really tough it gave me something to focus on. Whilst I might never have made any money from TGC, I gained a huge amount of experience and skills. Most importantly, I made so many great friendships and had so much fun.

Together, we've helped change the comics landscape in Scotland. We've produced an impressive body of work, and always supported each other along the way.

If you've been a fan of TGC, please continue to follow and support all its contributors, and look out for future collaborations.”

An excerpt from ‘First Prize’, one of Penny Sharp’s stories in That Girl Comic. 

It’s been a busy couple of weeks! Thanks to everyone who came along to our launch party last Wednesday, it was an amazing turnout and our venue Spoon Cafe couldn’t have been more helpful. And thanks to our seven comic performers: MJ, Ren, Penny, Innes, Adam, Gill and Eilidh (with Sooty). Cartoonists aren’t always comfortable being in the spotlight but it’s a really rewarding experience that really shows off the impact of comic art. 

A few days later it was time for Glasgow Comic Con once again. It’s great to catch up with regular readers every year, and meet new ones too. If you visited us you may have noticed we’re no longer selling Team Girl Comic zines (issues 1-9) but you can still order some of them online if you’re looking to complete your collection. The stall was getting a bit cluttered so we’re focusing on our later work now. 

Today we posted out the majority of our 100 Kickstarter rewards. We’re now incredibly popular down the local post office! 

Each one included a thank you postcard with Ren Wednesday’s gorgeous cover art, and a written message from one of our contributors. Each one is unique!

We’re having a launch party! And we’re teaming up with TGC contributor MJ Wallace who has successfully crowd-funded her latest autobio comic ‘Bi the Way’. 

Wednesday 28 June, Spoon Cafe Glasgow, 7-9pm

Throughout the evening we’ll have drawing fun and games as well as special comic performances by MJ, TGC Collective and friends.
