RIP, David Bowie
Obviously, David Bowieâs death was a surprise, because he meant it to be. The choice suits him. Someone who was so enamored of costume and image and celebrity is almost surely using it as a suit of armor as much as a toy. He, probably more than most, saw celebrity itself as a medium, to be toyed with and manipulated and turned into an art. Itâs not just that it hid the man himself. It is more that it made the ârealâ David Bowie somewhat irrelevant. The artâand the artificeâis all. And so who cares what real world physical indignity took his life? The point of him was his music, his image, his art.Â
No big surprise, but the New York Times had a piece showing that Bowie songs skyrocketed on Spotify after the announcement of his death. The songs are roughly what youâd guess. âHeroesâ is the big one, followed by âLetâs Danceâ. I will say that Iâm a little perplexed by âLife On Mars?â, because I had no idea that was such a popular Bowie song. Thereâs a sprinkling of new songs in there, which makes sense, since he literally released an album as he headed to his death bed.Â
Iâm not going to quarrel with or hipster-shame these songs. Theyâre all great songs! But, since Bowie clearly wanted to be remembered by his work and how it touched people, I figured Iâd make a list of my own, of songs that are not the ones that are getting the most airplay on Spotify, that I come back to again and again. These are in no particular order, though of course, considering the occasion, starting with a sad, funereal song.Â

But really, what is a musicianâs voice if not distinctive? Isnât that⌠good? Entire pieces have been written about the voices of Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, so American and vital and wise in their manly scratchiness, like unshaved bristle and whiskey and dirt. Man voice make music good. Woman voice music bad: Too high. Too sharp. Too warbly. Sounds like birds, screams, mother. It speaks volumes that men always seem to love PJ Harvey, she of the deep timbre.
