Petro acted first. His eyes slid away from Zatt’s face to the buzzing holoprojector in his hand. And Zatt knew, with that motion alone, that he would always, always, come second.

Zatt took another sip of ale to stall. A small part of him wanted to say the word and let her take off. See how far they could fly before the night was up. But then he thought of Petro, asleep down the hall with a tired smile on his face, and he found he couldn’t do it.
He picked at the sticky label on his ale bottle as he searched Ganodi’s gaze, hunting for the truth. She’d gotten better at hiding things from him these days, but Zatt had years of practice. He chose his words carefully. “I thought you were finally on board.”
“I am.” Ganodi raised a hand as if to stave off an argument. “I am. But the sun’s not up yet, and I won’t complain if you want to change your mind.”
