I will never forget my first summer with my Aunt when she encouraged me to try on some feminine undergarments. I felt so shy and a little embarrassed when she first looked me dressed like a girl. But I had the most wonderful feeling of lightheadedness and butterflies in my tummy, and when looked at me with the most loving and understanding smile and told me how beautiful and perfect I looked, I smiled back and ran into her arms for a big hug. I became her sweet niece for the entire summer that day.

It was supposed to be humiliating. The dress. The socks. The lipstick. Mom holding my hand. The saleswomen looked. Some whispered to each other. Was someone giggling? Because of me? One of them smiled and called me adorable. And somehow that made it worse. As all these women looked at me, I was wondering what they saw. Whatever it was, they seemed to like it.
