I love art. I’ve made it my profession as a teacher. Even after many years of being an artist, I still get excited about new creative experimentations and projects, new styles and concepts—even sometimes a new pencil or sketchbook. I’m reminded that you don’t have to be highly skilled to be an artist, and you don’t have to create a finished product that sells in a gallery to be one either. You can simply enjoy the process of creating. Not everything we create has to be sold or monetized. We are people, not products. It’s the process, not the price. The end product isn’t the paper or painting—it’s you, the person. Having a family has helped me realize this even more, and I wanted to share it with all of you this Christmas season. Having a son has made me reevaluate my time and realize my own mortality even more. Knowing that someday he will be here and I won’t is a sobering thought. I’m thankful I have a saving hope, which I demonstrate in this illustration by Jacob‘s ladder. Jacob’s ladder represents the prothetic pathway to heaven in the Old Testament, which is shown as Christ in the New Testament. Death can be seen in the lightning over the flying fish, and time is represented by the windmill. And of course, there’s the Blue Duck. ⠀ I wanted this digital illustration to have very limited line variation. As a young child in 80s, The Simpsons were not allowed in my house. By the time the 90s came along, my family watched it while eating dinner together. Due to the summer heat, my dog has been inside a lot more. Today she locked eyes with me and gave me a sincere look of appreciation for taking care of her. My son is one today! For his birthday my wife and I took him to the zoo to see the bears. We also got him a Jeep that I can control with a remote. We are so thankful to get to raise this awesome little boy.
