I also think, like... it's very sweet that whenever Vetinari is, shall we say, not feeling 100%, he likes to just have a chat with whoever's keeping an eye on him at the time. Ah, V- oh NOT Vimes, okay, and you are? Wonderful! Do you like being in the Watch? Well done. Who's that over there doing the shouting? Very good! The thing about this is, it's indicative of his actual character, rather than the Tyrant Persona or the general vibe he lets people assume about himself when they're working off of limited information. When he's hurt, or ill, or under the influence- whatever state he's in at the time where he physically cannot keep the evil dictator thing going- he's just cheerfully weird and very polite, and interested in other people. Ultimately I think these little unguarded moments do a lot to explain why he's doing this job in the first place, and what he might be like if he didn't feel like he had to be doing it.

They are very similar in a lot of ways and I don't think it's just me reading too much into it- they're friends, right? They've got to be friends for a reason, and if Sybil is calling him Havelock as early as Men at Arms then they've obviously been friends since before Sam came along. And I don't think Sybil would be actual, proper friends, on first-name terms, with someone whose Aloof Scary Tyrant persona was real. She sees the best in people and I think 'politely whimsical nerd who Cares A Lot' Vetinari is probably what she's seeing.

hey do guys ever think about how if vimes didnt get yeeted to the past in night watch, he'd never have known or heard of mossy lawn (nor of his skills as a doctor) and in the present they might not have been able to save sybil.

My first Discworld book was the Wee Free Men. I loved it, and read it over and over again. But since that was the only one my local library had, for the longest time I thought it was a standalone. Imagine my delight when, years later, I discovered the rest of this fantastic series.

The City Watch books in particular struck a note with me, and they’ve quickly become some of my all time favorites. So of course I had to draw this to celebrate.

She hadn’t set out to be an ornithologist. But birds brought Paul alive. All the... slowness in the rest of his thinking became a flash of lightning in the presence of birds. Suddenly he knew their names, habits and habitats, could whistle their songs, and after Polly had saved up for a box of paints off a traveller at the inn, had painted a picture of a wren so real you could hear it.

Their mother had been alive then. The row had gone on for days. Pictures of living creatures were an Abomination in the Eyes of Nuggan. Polly had asked why there were pictures of the Duchess everywhere, and had been thrashed for it. The picture had been burned, the paints thrown away.

It was a terrible thing. Her mother had been a kind woman, or as kind as a devout woman could be who tried to keep up with the whims of Nuggan, and she’d died slowly amidst pictures of the Duchess and amongst the echoes of unanswered prayers, but that was the memory that crawled treacherously into Polly’s mind every time: the fury and the scolding, while the little bird seemed to flutter in the flames...
