San Gimignano is a beautifully preserved medieval hill town in Tuscany, Italy. It is famous for its skyline of medieval towers, earning it the nickname โMedieval Manhattan.โ
The town grew wealthy during the Middle Ages thanks to its location on the pilgrimage route known as the Via Francigena. Rich families competed to build tall towers as symbols of their power and prestige. At its peak, the town had more than 70 towers; 14 still survive today.
San Gimignano suffered decline after plague outbreaks in the 14th century, but this helped preserve its medieval appearance because little new construction followed.
Today, the historic center of San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors come to admire its stone streets, towers, churches, and panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. It is considered one of the finest medieval towns in Europe. (๐ธ francescabologni)
