What a surreal and chaotic year it’s been! Pandemic fatigue has set in, and we’re all craving the joy the holiday season brings. We’ve gathered 5 simple ways to embrace the holiday season with family and friends amid these stressful times.  These ideas require little to no prep time and are fun for all ages. So sit back, enjoy your loved ones, and create some new memories!

1: Holiday Dress-Up

Get creative! Dressing up will help get everyone in the holiday spirit. You can buy, make, or scrounge through your closet for the following:

·Red, green, silver or gold-colored items

·Ugly Christmas sweaters

·Santa hat and/or beard

·Elf ears or reindeer antlers

·Unused garland, ornaments or tinsel

 2: Gingerbread House Contest

Set a time limit or make it all about the decorating! Remember who your party members are and what would be most fun for everyone involved. You’ll need: 

·Royal Icing

This is used for decorating, as well as the glue holding it all together.

·Gingerbread

Consider pre-made graham cracker houses, or pop-tarts if kids will be participating. Kits are available to buy and will allow each person a fair chance at winning.

·Candy

Colorful sprinkles, small candies, mini marshmallows, gumdrops, pretzels, candy canes, and gummy bears are some great options!

3: Holiday Scavenger Hunt – Home Edition

Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt?! Create a list of holiday items found around the house this time of year. Set a time limit, and the person with the most holiday items wins! Depending on the age groups participating, the items can be easier or more difficult to find. A few examples are as follows:

4: Holiday Tunes Trivia

We all hear Christmas music this time of year, but do we know the titles of these classics? Here’s a chance to stump your party members! Alumni Feature - Alexis Mayer

Why did you choose CVTC?

I chose CVTC because of its Early Childhood Education program. The program allows students to get out into classrooms and experience firsthand what a career in ECE would feel like right away. The class sizes are also smaller, so I was able to get one-on-one instruction with the educators as well.  

What has your career path been like?

After graduating from CVTC, I decided to continue my education at UW-Stout. I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in family life. I will be graduating from the program this August.

While furthering my education, I wanted to continue to use the skills and knowledge that I learned at CVTC. For about a year now, I’ve been the lead teacher at Little Sprouts Academy in the 2.5-3.5-year-old classroom. I’ve enjoyed being able to be hands-on in the classroom and implement more activities!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is being able to see the excitement on my kids’ faces when they learn or try something new! Children are so courageous, genuine, and compassionate. They teach me new things every day—I can’t imagine doing anything else. 

What were your favorite classes at CVTC?

I genuinely loved all my Early Childhood Education courses because my instructors were so knowledgeable and inspiring. If I had to pick a favorite course, I would say our practicums were my favorite. We would get to shadow and instruct in different centers or schools. We would work with a cooperating teacher and classroom, implementing activities and learning about a specific age group for a whole semester. 

What did you learn at CVTC that you have applied to your current job?

I learned about the importance of building positive relationships and communicating effectively with families. Additionally, I learned a lot about children with differing abilities—every child is unique in their own way, and being able to apply teaching strategies in many different ways has been helpful in my current role.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell myself that all the hard work and passion I have for this career ends up being very worth it. 

Any advice for current students?

The advice I would give to current students would be to cherish the relationships you’ve made with your classmates and instructors. The time you have with them isn’t as long as you think and the friendships you build will be lifelong. 

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would visit Norway. I’m Norwegian, so being able to visit the places where my ancestors grew up would be amazing!

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I was born in Wisconsin Rapids and lived there until I was in elementary school. After that, my family moved to Hudson, Wisconsin, and then we came to Eau Claire. There is a total of seven people in my family, and I am the oldest of my five siblings. I chose to come to CVTC because it is close to home.

What made you choose your program? Did anyone or anything in particular inspire you?

Originally, I was planning to go into the IT network specialist program. I took some high school classes related to IT but wasn’t sure if I liked it, and I was very indecisive. I began talking with my uncle, who is a radiologic technologist, and he gave me some insight about his job. Essentially, my uncle and mom inspired me to pursue the radiography program.

What are your plans after school?

I would love to be a radiologic technologist in the Eau Claire area someday. I would love to give back to my mom and dad in the future—they have always supported me. My mom is going back to school for nursing, and I am very proud of her.

How did you choose CVTC? Who helped you be successful?

I chose CVTC with the help of a family friend. She told me about the College, and I felt that it would be a good fit for me. It’s a bonus that it’s close to home too. My siblings look up to me and hold me accountable. They drive me to succeed in school.

What do you enjoy most about your current classes?

I find school interesting. I think it’s important to learn anything you can as long as you can. It’s fun to learn different concepts.

What do you enjoy doing outside of class?

My church is my second home. I attend the Hmong Christian church and was the youth president there. We do egg roll fundraisers often, which is very fun.

Share some cool facts with us!

-        I’ve made 25,000 egg rolls in one day with my church.

-        I like playing the drums and guitar for church.

-        I don’t watch a lot of TV shows, but I do watch different types of movies.

-        I have pet chickens and fish.

Why did you choose CVTC?

I chose to attend CVTC because I wanted to work in the medical field, and I knew that CVTC had a very reputable Respiratory Therapy program that produces successful, working graduates.

What has your career path been like?

During my time at CVTC as a respiratory therapy student, I attended clinicals at several different hospitals in the Chippewa Valley and the Twin Cities. A few months before graduation, I accepted a full-time position at M Health University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. Once I graduated, I passed my boards, obtained my license, and started working full-time as a registered respiratory therapist (RRT). I had the opportunity to become a member of the medical transport team (bonus—check out a feature written about Samantha in the fall Alumni Newsletter—page 4). My very first transport was via ambulance and involved attending the delivery of a 22-week gestation micro preemie, and it was a very rewarding experience—one that I will never forget. I later obtained additional credentials behind my name (RRT-NPS [Registered Respiratory Therapist – Neonatal & Pediatric Specialist]). I now work at Masonic as a casual employee and work full-time at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love this career. It is difficult to pinpoint what the most rewarding part of working as a respiratory therapist is, because there are many rewarding aspects of the job. I feel joy when I attend a delivery and help a newborn baby to take their first breath. It is also an honor to comfort and care for a patient as they take their very last breath. When my aunt passed away, the RT managing her ventilator helped my family to understand the process, and it was so comforting to us. A respiratory therapist gets to work with patients of all ages and becomes knowledgeable about many different pulmonary diseases. A member of my family has cystic fibrosis, and I am very passionate about helping people with CF; it’s incredibly rewarding to help a patient get well enough to get out of the hospital and return home.

What were some of your favorite classes at CVTC?

Some of my favorite classes at CVTC were Microbiology, Medical Terminology, and Respiratory Pharmacology. 

What have you learned at CVTC that you’ve applied to your current job?

I can honestly say that everything I learned in the Respiratory Therapy program applies to my career.

Name: Adrian Sabani

Hometown: Anchorage, Alaska

Major: Digital Marketing

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I graduated from Altoona High School in 2014 and started at CVTC that fall for accounting. Shortly after beginning classes, I was dismissed in 2015 because I wasn’t passionate about the program. In 2016, I came back and was undeclared; then, I switched to business management for one semester. Eventually, I found my way to digital marketing. I currently live in Eau Claire, and my family lives in Marshfield. I’m doing an internship at CVTC right now, but when I go home on the weekends, I’m a server at a local café.

What made you choose this program? Did anyone or anything inspire you?

I originally thought marketing was going to be my niche. However, when I met with my advisor, they thought digital marketing would be a better fit, as it was a new program at the time. I wanted to find something I enjoyed, and my advisor was right—it’s the perfect choice for me!

What do you want to be when you grow up? Plans after school?

When I was 13, I wanted to be a famous YouTuber and have a channel about video games. Now, I want to find a position locally and specialize in digital arts and videography. I don’t have a dream job, but I know I want to work somewhere I can maintain a good work-life balance.

How did you choose CVTC? What helps you be successful?

In high school, I didn’t take my grades seriously, but I knew I wanted to go to college. I chose CVTC because of their transfer agreements with other universities and its affordability. I’m successful when I prioritize and use good time management. Because I wasn’t successful at CVTC when I first started, I’ve learned that perseverance and tenacity help me grow and get better.

What do you enjoy about your classes?

I love that my classes highlight hands-on and practical skills. Shout out to Laurie Boettcher—she makes class fun and helps every student learn something new!

What do you enjoy doing outside of class?

When I’m not in class, I enjoy cooking—specifically stuffed shells, if I have the time. Otherwise, I like to lounge and play basketball.

 Here is how you can make the most of your spring break living in Wisconsin:

1. Lay out

You may have to put on some layers, but you can still catch some UV rays. Take advantage of any time in the sun you can get, and remember sunscreen!

2. Stick a pink umbrella in your drink

Ya know when you’re on a fancy, tropical vacation, and all of your drinks are served with an umbrella? Pretend you’re laying out on the beach, pour a cold glass of water, and stick a little umbrella in there. Voilà!

3. Wear a floral pattern

Get in that Hawaiian mood by putting on your floral shirt. Combine this with your pink umbrella drink, and you’ll be feeling more vacation-y than ever!

4. Grill out

Fry up some burgers, brats, hot dogs, or whatever floats your boat! Get in that spring break groove with the smell of freshly-charred meats.

5. Pretend your cold is just your allergies acting up

Winter is technically “over,” but your sickness might not agree with that. If you pretend your cold is just allergies, you’ll feel that spring break vibe more easily.

6. Break out your bathing suit, and go swimming (bathtub edition)

Spring break is supposed to be all about sunshine, warmth, vacations, and swimming. Break out those swimsuits, and take a dip…in your tub. Pretend you are on the beach getting your tan on. Play some of your favorite music to kick back and relax.

7. Watch your favorite show, or binge read your favorite book

We’re serious about this one. Take some time for yourself, and catch up on your favorite shows, books, or movies.

8. Take a nap

Another serious one here. After doing everything listed above, in addition to working, watching the kiddos, or spending time around your house, a nap can be the perfect remedy to ignite true relaxation.

Tips for a Rewarding Career Fair:

Dress for success

To give the best first impression, be sure to dress professionally. It’s recommended that you are interview ready or dress business casually. Though it’s cheesy, remember that your attitude is part of your attire, and confidence is key.

Practice a pitch

Part of a career fair is knowing how to sell yourself in a short period of time. You may only have 30 – 60 seconds to let a representative find out who you are, so it’s important to know your main points. Practicing before the event will allow you to know your strengths and weaknesses and what you can offer a future company.

Bring the goods

Though it’s not required, it shows preparedness to bring copies of your resume, pens, portfolios, and any business cards/contact information you may have. If a company is looking to hire, this may be the clincher in getting an interview.

Do your research

Before you arrive, look at the companies who are coming, and investigate their mission, products, staff, etc. If a particular business sticks out to you, be sure you have enough time to visit their booth. Only ask questions that can’t be answered with information found on their website. An example question might be this: “What is a typical day like in your position?”

Be on time

Even though the event lasts for a few hours, don’t come rushing in with 20 minutes left of the career fair. Some companies may be packing up at this point, and it implies that you are often rushed and untimely. If you have limited time, visit a handful of companies in which you have the most interest.

Network

It’s all about who you know. Now is the time to find things you have in common with company representatives and create connections. If you’re looking for an internship, this is a perfect place to find potential companies you may want to partner with.

My name is Gabriela Graves, and I am 24 years old. I grew up in the Chippewa Valley and began my post-secondary educational journey at UW-River Falls, where I was studying Animal Science. I later realized my true passion of caring for children and transferred to CVTC in 2014. After graduating from CVTC, I continued my education and received my Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from UW-River Falls in 2018.  I currently work as the Director of Little Sprouts Academy in Menomonie. My pride and joy is my three-year-old cat, Remington (Remy Jo for short).  

Why did you choose CVTC?  

I chose CVTC because after my first year of college, I decided to change career paths from Animal Science to Early Childhood Education. CVTC offered the program that I was interested in at a very affordable rate. Additionally, the smaller class sizes allowed me to form stronger connections with my peers and instructors.  

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?  

I would travel to Alaska to go on the orca cruise.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?  

The most rewarding part of my job is the relationships I have built with the children, families, and staff at Little Sprouts. The most challenging part of my job is having people who are outside of my field not understand how important the role that early childhood professionals play in the lives of young children. I can’t even tell you the number of times people have said to me “so, you just play with kids all day?” The first five years of a child’s life are the most important for brain development, so early childhood education is extremely important in shaping children to enjoy learning and become life-long learners.  

What were your favorite classes at CVTC?  

My absolute favorite class that I took while at CVTC was Marriage and Family Studies. I found that course extremely interesting, and I learned so much that I apply each day at work. Dr. Carmen Iannarelli taught the Marriage and Family Studies course, and she is a large proponent of what made the course so engaging. I always looked forward to her class and would recommend her to anyone taking courses at CVTC.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?

I would choose to be able to time travel, so I can relive some of my favorite memories.  

What advice would you give to current students?  

I would give current students the advice of being a sponge. Absorb everything you can during your time at CVTC. All the instructors at CVTC have an immense amount of knowledge in their fields, and if you put in the effort, you can truly learn a lot from them to feel confident entering your field after graduation.

What’s the next goal you’d like to achieve?  

A big goal I have for myself is to get my master’s degree. I have a lot of interest in early childhood leadership and advocacy, so I am hoping to pursue that in the next few years.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I grew up in Augusta and still live there with my family. I commute to CVTC for school and work. My family consists of my mom, dad, step-mom, and my two younger siblings, Noah and Sienna.

What made you choose this program? Did anyone or anything particular inspire you?

When I started at CVTC, I was a pre-program diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) student. While working toward my DMS degree, I began taking classes in the central service technician program. I found surgery interesting, so I thought it would be a good direction to take while on the waiting list. Recently, I have decided to pursue the nursing program here. I am working on taking some pre-program classes and take my HESI exam soon. I know I am where I should be (finally)!

What do you want to be when you grow up? Plans after school?

When I graduate, I want to be an RN (registered nurse) and work in labor and delivery. What I want to be most when I “grow up” is a mom! I am really excited to start my own family someday.

How did you choose CVTC? What helps/helped you be successful?

I chose CVTC after having a miserable three semesters at UW-Eau Claire. I finally realized I wasn’t where I wanted to be and transferred to CVTC. My mom was a huge factor in my decision to transfer and was very supportive.

What are you looking forward to most about starting classes/enjoy about current classes?

I am looking forward to my phlebotomy class this semester! My mom took phlebotomy as a medical assistant student here and absolutely loved it. I’m hoping that I enjoy the class as much as she did. I also love my steady, day-to-day schedule during the semester.

What do you enjoy doing outside of class?

Outside of class, my favorite thing to do is read. I have a very impressive collection of books, and I fly right through them. I recently read the “Crazy Rich Asians” book series and will definitely read them again. I did see the movie, and I was impressed by it, but the book is better. Books are always better! Other than reading, I like to spend time outside when it’s warm. I also spend time working as a SOAR (Student Outreach and Retention) student worker in Student Central. My favorite part of my job is helping out with orientation and registration events on campus.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I was born in Barron, Wisconsin and now live in New Auburn with my family. I am the middle child of seven kids, and we have all been homeschooled. My mom stays at home and teaches us while my dad works for a newspaper. I have two part-time jobs; I work at the Bloomer Advance doing page layout and at the Bloomer Bakery serving baked goods. Pro tip: the best pastries are cinnamon rolls and custard-filled long Johns.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Plans after school?

When I was younger, I wanted to do something with IT, law, and business entrepreneurship. However, now I would like to finish my generals here, which is why the liberal arts program is a good fit. Then, I want to transfer to UW-Eau Claire for business and finish up at the University of Minnesota for law. Eventually, I would like to work for a technology company; I haven’t decided if I’ll stay in the area or move to Denver or California.

How did you choose CVTC, and what helps you be successful?

I chose CVTC because the location offers a reasonable commute from my house, and I’ll be able to transfer my credits to a university. Compared to the other technical colleges in the area, CVTC has the best options for programs and courses.

I enjoy the feel of the classroom. All my instructors are nice, which helps me be successful in my classes.

It’s fall, y’all! To celebrate the Thanksgiving season, we are here with ideas to create the best friendsgiving on a budget! Check out some of the ideas below, and let us know your favorite Thanksgiving (or friendsgiving) traditions! 

1. Set your space & send invitations

First thing’s first: determine how much space you have in your home (or other location) to host friendsgiving. Inviting more people than you can fit will start off the celebration on the wrong foot. Once you’ve set your space and have your guest list, it’s time to send out invitations. Group texts, emails, or group messages are always good options. If you’re looking to [pumpkin] spice it up a bit, feel free to use online invitations!

2. Plan the meal

Once you know how many guests are coming, you can plan the meal! Being that this friendsgiving is budget-friendly, everyone could save money by splitting the cost and making it a potluck. Typically, the host will cook the turkey, but if you’d rather not make a turkey due to cost, time, or simply not knowing how to cook one (like us), there are other main course options: ham, chicken, rib roast, beef tenderloin, rotisserie chicken, lasagna, or even pizza.

After you’ve decided the main protein (pizza can have protein), everyone else can sign up for the side dishes. Typically these include: appetizers, potatoes, salads, stuffings, vegetables, cranberries, or desserts. Keep in mind any dietary restrictions that your guests may have. You could create a section on your invitations where your guests can specify if they have any food restrictions. Below are a few recipes for common dietary needs:

3. Make it an all-day thing

Who said friendsgiving can’t be for the whole day? If you want to extend the festivities, make it last for more than just one meal! Provide snacks for them throughout the afternoon: cheese, meat, crackers, chips and dip, deviled eggs, olives, and pickles.   

4. Get eating utensils and to-go containers

Once you have the delicious feast in front of you, you’ll want something to eat it with! To save time on clean up, you can buy disposable plates, cups/glasses, utensils, napkins, and garbage bags. Additionally, depending on how many leftovers you may have, you’ll need fridge and freezer space. Sending people home with leftover food is easy to do with large Ziploc bags. Be sure to recycle your plastic bags after use. You can find them cheap at Dollar Tree or Walmart. Otherwise, to help save the environment, use whatever you have at home and clean the dishes (hopefully your friends will be nice enough to help with clean up).   

5. Create your playlist

To get everyone in the friendsgiving mood, create a playlist with the best beats. Not enough time to search for Thanksgiving songs? No worries, audio streaming services like Pandora and Spotify already have playlists saved and ready to go!   

6. Provide games to play before dinner

If you need some time-fillers while the main dishes are cooking, feel free to play a game. Some group options are below:

Did you know that Americans spend billions of dollars on Halloween each year? Between costumes, decorations, and candy, that’s money that could have been spent elsewhere. By spending more wisely, this cost could be decreased. This year, we are sharing some quick tips on creating a Halloween costume without breaking the bank! 

1. Find your style

The first thing to do is determine the look you’re going for. Do you want a scary, funny or cute costume? Next, determine if you want to have a single, couple, or group costume. There are great ideas for families and best friends too! Finding an idea can be the toughest part, so there’s no shame in searching Pinterest for inspiration (we did). Looking through your closet can be helpful to know what you already have on-hand, such as scarves, hats, pants, shoes, accessories, and colors you normally wear. Knowing what you have upfront can steer you in the right direction if you have most of the items for the costume already, and it saves money! 

2. Set a budget

Once you’ve locked down a costume idea and raided through your closet, you’re ready to set a budget! At this point, you’ll know what parts of your costume you have and which items you still need. Creating a cheap costume on a budget is possible, and doing the hard work up front can regulate your spending. Check your local thrift shops and look for sales. 3. Prepare for the weather

The Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable. Prepare for the cold (maybe even a few snowflakes). Usually in October, the temperature is a little chilly. Determining your location is key to staying comfortable. Are you going to a party, trick-or-treating, participating in a costume contest, or handing out candy? Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I grew up and went to school in Bloomer, Wisconsin, a small town 30 minutes north of Eau Claire. During my last two years of high school, I drove from Eau Claire to Bloomer because my mom got a new job and we moved. However, I didn’t want to change schools, so I chose to commute. My brother definitely has the better end of the deal since he’s in middle school and can go to school in Eau Claire. 

When thinking about college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to go to school for, but I knew getting an education was important. The digital marketing program was something that has always interested me, so after discovering that it was an option nearby, it was an easy choice. 

What do you want to be when you grow up? Did anyone or anything in particular inspire you?

I’ve changed my mind so many times, but when I was younger I wanted to be an artist or veterinarian. My mom has always been my biggest supporter and has taught me a lot; she certainly inspired me to pursue my dreams in digital marketing. 

What made you choose this program? What are your plans after school?

Digital marketing is the perfect combination of my interests because it puts together creativity, art, social media, and helping others. Additionally, art classes were my favorite in high school, so being able to continue using those skills is the best! Since I just finished my first semester of the program, I’m not quite sure what I want to do after school yet. However, I hope my internship will help me determine my career path. 

How did you choose CVTC and what helps you be successful?

Choosing CVTC was an easy choice because it allows me to live at home, spend time with my family, and pursue a program I enjoy while saving money. Reminding myself to always be who I am helps me be successful. I didn’t work as hard as I should have in high school to get good grades, so I want to work harder now that I’m in college. Being successful comes down to taking the time to put in the work and challenge myself.

Name: Jessica (Jessa) Clifford

Hometown: Coon Rapids, MN

Major: Health Information Management & Technology

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I grew up in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, but now I live in Owen, Wisconsin with my fiancé, Cody, and our two-year-old son, Mikael. Cody and I met in high school through a mutual friend. He is a window fabricator, and I am a stay-at-home mom, which I love because there is a lot joy and fulfillment in spending the day with my son. We are currently saving for a down payment on our house and hope to buy a home in the Eau Claire area.

What made you choose this program? Did anyone or anything in particular inspire you?

I’ve always wanted to be in healthcare, but I knew nursing wasn’t for me because I hate seeing children in pain. My biggest inspiration for going to school is my son; he encourages me to be my best and chase my dreams. One of my strengths is that I have an analytical brain, but I am certainly nervous for chemistry and general anatomy and physiology because they will be tough classes.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Plans after school?

When I was younger, a family friend taught me to work on cars, and that’s what I’ve done for years. I would be in the shop from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. I still enjoy doing that, but I am excited for the day when I get a job using my healthcare skills. Ideally, after graduation, I would love to get a job at Mayo.

How did you choose CVTC? What helps you be successful?

I chose CVTC because of the location and the cost. In the summer, my in-laws watch Mikael, and during the school year, my babysitter lives in Eau Claire, so it’s the perfect place to be. College is expensive, but having the chance to go to CVTC is much more cost-effective. I also like how the atmosphere is more relaxed than a four-year university.

What are you looking forward to most about starting classes?

I’m really excited about having adult interaction. Most of my time is spent with my son right now, which I love, but it will be nice to have a normal conversation again. I’ve been out of high school for a while, so there are definitely some nerves, but I’m thrilled to start learning again.

I know how to drive a manual transmission car.

I’ve donated my hair three separate times in my life, for a total of four feet.

I love taking road trips to see my family in Minnesota.

Even though I’ve lived in Wisconsin for years, I still haven’t gotten used to the farm smell.

Name: Aubrey Schleppenbach

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I grew up in Stoughton, Wisconsin with my two older sisters and one older brother who still live there. Previously, I worked as a SOAR (Student Outreach and Retention) student in Student Central, as a lifeguard, and a CNA. My college journey began at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, then I decided to transfer to CVTC because of the lower cost of tuition and the hope that I could graduate sooner!

What made you choose this program? Did anyone or anything in particular inspire you?

I am excited for the opportunities that come from attending CVTC. The nursing program is a great major. It’s a fast-paced program, and getting right into the field after graduation is important to me.

After talking with friends who attend CVTC and doing further research on the website, I decided that CVTC was the right place for me!

What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you have plans after school?

My goal is to work as an ER (emergency room) nurse after I graduate from CVTC. I hope to further my education by obtaining my BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). Besides nursing, I would love to live on a farm and be a beekeeper on the side. I’m not quite sure where I’ll end up after graduation, but I will most likely move Out West to Montana for a bit.

What are you most looking forward to about starting core classes?

I am a hands-on learner and love to work with people, so I would say that I am very excited to start clincials once I begin the nursing program.

What do you enjoy doing outside of class?

I am an avid hiker, kayaker, and backpacker. I also enjoy cooking different types of food and traveling. I would love to travel to Thailand or Iceland because both places have a lot of adventuring opportunities.

Tell us some facts about yourself:

I was caught in a blizzard while backpacking in Montana and had to be airlifted off the mountain!

My favorite season is fall.

I was a competitive swimmer for over 10 years!

I have two dogs: Maggie May, a 13-year-old English Sheepdog, and a 9-week-old Goldendoodle named August.

I love Thai food.

If working behind the scenes to help people in healthcare is your passion, then you’ll want to keep reading! This month, we are highlighting a program that’s new to CVTC this fall: Health Navigator. To know more about what this program entails, check out our interview with Program Director, Julie Pepper, below.

Why was this program added at CVTC?

This program was added in response to requests from area healthcare facilities. They are seeing the need for more people in their organizations to help patients and their families navigate through the complexities of the healthcare system and find the resources they may need outside the hospital.

What course are you most looking forward to teaching in this program?

For our first semester, I am looking forward to teaching the Culture of Healthcare course; this will be a great introductory course for students. They will hopefully gain a better understanding of how healthcare organizations operate and see all the different professions involved with providing the best possible care to our patients.

What do you feel is the biggest skill students will learn in this program?

As a health navigator, students will need to know how all aspects of healthcare function. From insurance to nursing homes to home healthcare, patients will be looking for information and help to guide them through the process, so it’s important to know the ins and outs of healthcare.

What makes this program unique?

It provides an opportunity for people to work in healthcare without needing to have the clinical types of skills. Graduates from this program will be able to help patients find the resources they need to manage their health. They could be helping a patient understand their insurance coverage, completing the necessary steps to get a procedure or piece of equipment covered, or they may help patients find an adult daycare to help care for an aging partner or parent. Being a health navigator provides a unique opportunity to help patients in a way that has not been offered by healthcare facilities before.

What makes this program challenging?

The challenges are also what makes this program so interesting. There is a lot to learn about the whole healthcare system and the organizations associated with healthcare. When you have the knowledge, you can communicate with a broad range of people. Students could be working with the elderly, their families, pediatrics, and diverse patients with special needs. They need the information and it has to be presented in a way that everyone can understand.

How will this program impact the Chippewa Valley?

This program will allow healthcare systems to fill the gap in patient care. We have many wonderful healthcare providers, nurses, medical assistants, physical therapists, etc. who already have more than enough on their plates. A health navigator can provide additional care that patients need in dealing with a life changing situation.

What is your experience in the field?

I have worked in healthcare for more than 20 years and often provided the services of a health navigator without the specific title. As we look at the changing world of healthcare reimbursement, the focus is on providing a holistic approach to services, and a health navigator can certainly help with that.

Anything else you’d like to say?

It’s okay to admit it…we all get gassy at times, some of us more than others. This month, we are highlighting a brand new program that works with gas all day long: Gas Utility Construction & Service. This fall, we are bringing this program to CVTC! Wanna know why and what it’s all about? Check out our interview with Program Director, RC Jensen, below!

Why was this program added at CVTC?

There is a huge demand for qualified personnel in the gas industry. These are good paying, steady jobs. There are approximately 9 million people in the natural gas industry today, and in spite of the large number already in the industry, this past spring the industry was short 90,000 qualified workers.

What course are you most looking forward to teaching in this program?

All the field work. I love working outside. There is a lot of time spent out in the gas utility field working on equipment, installation of gas facilities, and fusing.

What do you feel is the biggest skill students will take away from this program?

The utility industry is a family. We work together to accomplish the tasks in a safe manner. Safety is the most important skill in our industry.

What makes this program unique?

We have local gas companies and international companies that are partnering with us to bring this program to CVTC. Most of the learning and eventual work in the industry will be outside. Included in this specialized training will be digging by hand; using various excavation equipment, including backhoe and compact excavator, utility plows, utility trenchers, pneumatic piercing tools, jackhammers, and fusing equipment; installing and maintaining metering equipment and pressurization equipment; and dealing with customers.

What makes this program challenging?

This is a highly regulated industry. There is a fair amount to learn, but we will go through it and apply it together. Our students will come out of the program knowing how to be safe in this industry. They will also learn how to keep the public safe when dealing with natural gas.

How will this program impact the Chippewa Valley?

There are companies in the Eau Claire area that are planning to hire over 20 people in this industry next year. Including the surrounding area extending over to Minnesota, there are plans to hire over 80 people.  

What is your experience in the field?

I recently retired from a 29 year career at Xcel Energy (formerly NSP) in Menomonie, Wisconsin. I spent most of my career at Xcel Energy working in the field on both the gas and electric sides of the company. I did gas and electric locating, gas and electric metering, gas compliance, and gas trouble (leak/odor calls).

Anything else you’d like to say?

My goal is to help every student who joins this program be a successful and safe gas industry employee. I will do what I can to help them succeed! I have made it 29 years accident free thus far, and this industry has been fantastic for me and my family. I hope to pass along that success to all who enter our classrooms and labs.
