“ My bad bro, traffic was awful. ” Z said, undressing his jacket and hanging it over his chair before taking his seat. “ Thanks for meeting me for lunch, though. I’m sure you had more pressing things to do besides entertain little ol’ me. How’s your week been? ” Having returned only three months prior, Zaire was still weaving himself back into his home town and its people. Getting to everyone he cared for but also welcoming new journeys and faces. Not his usual approach or mentality when it came to Jasper and the many troubles he’d left behind, but one his therapist along with closest friends assured would pave a clearer path for him moving forward. “ And the kids? ”

Zaire had assumed it’d be easier to approach things once he was back in town. That the proximity would give him the push he needed to make things right again. But the problem he was confronted with while his hand hung over the door - knock at the ready - wasn’t showing up, but rather figuring out what to do once there. What to say and how to say it. His previous attempts had never ended well. Before he knew it aggression took over and conversations turned to yelling and before long a verbal argument ensued. But things were different now, weren’t they? Shaking himself out of his head, Z knocked on the door a few times. He hadn’t given them much notice, but with Jaxon avoiding his calls the last few days, Z hadn’t had the chance to officially tell them he had moved back. It’d only been a few weeks, and with the chaos of Nessa’s arrival and him settling into this new and more financially steady job, it’d slipped his mind. A smile replaced his troubled features as the door before him opened. “ I hope I didn’t wake you. ”
Having just dropped off the child at her school to practice for an upcoming Christmas show, and needing any and every excuse to leave the premises and not be stuck there like the other parents or guardians, Z found himself waiting for two slices of pizza to devour. A win win, if he said so himself. She’d be entertained and would hopefully return drained of energy and he got a mouth full of cheese and garlic flavored crust. “ Thanks. ” he uttered to the person behind the counter and turned to find a seat immediately making eye contact with a ghost of his past. He paused for a hesitant moment, staring blankly at the other before strutting straight over and sitting across the male. Z didn’t speak, merely stared, unsure of why he’d even bothered approaching but having been too impulsive to retrieve now.

“ Are you sure this is what you want? ” he asked once more, not fully understanding why Autumn would find interest in entertaining a five year old for the night. By the time he normally hit his bed each evening, Z was exhausted beyond measure. Simply doing this out of pleasure seemed more like self punishment and torture. He couldn’t help but cringe at the excitement in both the girl’s expressions over the so-called pajama party. Luckily he hadn’t been invited, though he did plan to stay long enough to give her an out. “ It’s still early, ” But he couldn’t deny just how thankful he was for Autumn. Zaire took off the overnight backpack he had packed, placing it on the kitchen counter while the tiny human he’d been entrusted rushed to Autumn's side.

Z: I'd say I'm here to collect but gimme a sec, let me try it in a sequence you may like better
Z: [ . . . ]
Z: If Jesus could turn water to wine, then maybe I can turn you into mine
Z: [ . . . ]
Z: How'd I do?
Z: 10/10 surely
Z: Date worthy at the very least

‑ˋ⭒ setting : the bean scene , early afternoon on the weekend
while teaching kindergarten didn't require much grading , gus still needed to figure out how to keep a group of little kids entertained and engaged and learning all day long. thus , here he was spending his weekend in the corner of the cafe ; laptop open with enough tabs to crash the system if he wasn't careful. he only got up , seemingly returning to the real world , when he realized his cup of caffeine was depleted. however , on his way to order something else , he collided with someone. “ ah ! oh my god ! ” his volume a bit louder than expected , caught by surprise. “ sorry , i'm out of it. been staring at a screen all day … i don't even know what time it is , actually … ”
His automatic reaction was to tighten his chest and push forward as if to incite a fight. “ Now what’s your problem? ” He asked immediately following the impact before noticing the kindergarten teacher that he dropped the little girl off to every morning. Taking a step back, Zaire recouped himself and almost chuckled at the stress steaming off the other male. “ Don’t sweat it, ” he said, waving the apology away like an annoying fly, “ At least the cup was empty. ” He proceeded to straighten his shirt and jacket, then glanced at the watch adorning his wrist. “ It's a quarter to two. ” Z offered the time, smirking while he thought of what else the teacher was possibly drinking along with his coffee. “ Past five somewhere. ”
❝ afternoon , ❞ he greeted as he walked into the room , gaze landing on the person in question. he'd only been on shift for a couple of hours , and , as expected , there was a decent chunk of foot traffic. it wasn't anything felix wasn't already accustomed to , and he was quite certain it could've been a lot more chaotic. the patient in question didn't look too horrible , which he chose to take as a good sign. however , he'd need them to confirm that. people came to the er for all sorts of reasons , something that was not lost on him. ❝ how are you feeling ? ❞ felix questioned , his gaze never leaving the other.
“ It’s not me. ” he said, motioning to the five year old he had sat on the table. The last few years of his mother’s life were the only times he ever found himself within the walls of a hospital. Zaire couldn’t stand the smell it fostered, nor did he care to pay thousands of dollars for a doctor to tell him he was fine. Instead, he found other ways of handling his cuts and bruises after bar tights, ignored his concussions and hoped for the best. But he couldn’t do that anymore, not with a child to look after, so when the little girl woke up feverish he didn’t know what else to do. Gathering all of her paperwork - and almost leaving her behind before reminding himself where he was headed - Z brought her in to be checked. “ She was complaining of a headache and didn’t really eat much last night. ” he spoke, pushing off the corner chair in the room.
did I just see DANIEL EZRA walking down the street? no, that was ZAIRE BELL! HIM/HE are an THIRTY FIVE year old who identifies as a MALE. I hear that they spend their days as a DISC JOKEY (DJ) at 101.5 FM. last I heard, they’ve been in town for MOST OF HIS LIFE (recently returned) and were living in DOWNTOWN. some people would say that they’re CHARMING & TEMPERAMENTAL, but I wouldn’t judge a book by its cover!
TRIGGER WARNING: alcohol, drugs, physical/mental abuse, death mention
Zaire was born into a loving marriage once upon a time. Second to the Bell family - a well established family of the town - they had every chance they could possibly think of. But tragedy struck their little family one winter afternoon when Zaire and his brother played on a lake and the ground beneath them collapsed. His brother, being the eldest by three years, had managed to scoop Zaire out of the water before sinking under.
The death left his family in shambles. His father turned to the bottle, blaming all of the events from that moment forward on his last living son while his mother stood back and said nothing for the longest time. It wasn't until Zaire received a really bad beating that she put her foot down and attempted to take him with her.
But being the heir of his family's fortune gave a lot of benefit to his father and by the time their divorce papers were signed, full custody was awarded to him and along with that everything they possessed. It left his mother with no option but to go live with her relatives.
In his father's care, Zaire's whole world turned about. Nothing he did was ever right, his attempts and cries for help were seen as rebellious and he was quickly labeled a 'troubled kid'. Seeing no way beyond his cards, Zaire played the part well. He stopped caring about everything around him and allowed impulses to take control.
During his younger years he made a lot of mistakes and never really let himself suffer the consequences. He didn't sit long enough to let things get to him and would turn to the next chaotic path in order to ignore reality. From drugs to binging on alcohol, never ending clubs and parties, never getting his life together.
Out of his recklessness came two children and responsibilities he had no knowledge on. Avoidance became his normal. Evasion his only option. It took him moving out of town to strip some of his wrongs. He didn't have much to his name, but he worked endlessly to get by and offer what little he could to his kids.
Zaire would never claim to be father of the year, nor did he think he had a chance at fixing all the chaos he's caused in life, but after putting himself through community college and focusing on becoming one of the top DJ's around he hoped to shed even a little bit of the troubled kid he once was.
While he failed miserably at a lot in life there was something about music and connecting with people that he was so fluent in. He built an entire persona that allowed him to separate from his mess of a life and entertain the masses in a way that benefitted him greatly. Before he knew it, he was sought after to host clubs and parties, later on working towards having his own booth at a station with viewers tuning in and increasing daily.
Moving back to town was one of the many steps he'd take to gain his children's back, but before he was completely DFC dropped by his front door leaving him with a surprise he never saw coming. A five year old daughter of whom he knew nothing of was awarded to him by the state after her mother's arrest.
Zaire didn't have a single clue what being a present father was, the picture of his very own father tarnishing any thought that crossed his head. His elder children - who lived with their mother - had never known a father figure in him and now here he was in charge of sheltering and protecting another one. He didn't know how he'd do it, but there was very little options besides sending the child to foster care.
