sookie watched the moment his expression changed, the way his body recoiled before he even spoke, like instinct had already decided she was something dangerous. something to stay away from. her shoulders drew in reflexively, hands tightening in the sleeves of her coat as his words landed exactly where she’d known they would. defensive. guarded. how could they not be anything but? her gaze dropped for half a second before lifting back to him.
“ i know, ” sookie said quietly when he finished. the urge to explain rushed in immediately and she followed it just enough to keep herself honest. “ you’re right, you're right. i don’t. ” sookie shook her head once, small and deliberate. despite jasper being home and felix's supposed monopoly on the town, in hindsight, perhaps it would have been a good idea to give the father of her child she hasn't seen or spoken to in five years a heads up that she'd be in town. “ i’m not here to put you on the spot or anything, felix. ” the words came softer after that, less practiced. “ i came back because — ” she stopped herself, the name of her mother catching painfully in her throat, the funeral only days away. she swallowed, choosing the version of the truth she could say aloud. “ — because of family matters. ” does he know about her mother's funeral? would or does he care?
with a few hesitant steps, sookie moves out of the line and properly faces the man she left behind years ago. she feels stupid, unprepared. like she’d imagined this moment a hundred times and still managed to get it wrong. she hadn’t rehearsed what to do with her hands or where to stand, hadn’t prepared for the way his harsh gaze would pull everything loose inside her chest. “ ... i’m sorry you had to find out this way. it wasn't fair to you. i'm sorry, i am. ”
felix had been grossly unprepared for seeing her. he thought she'd fallen off the face of the earth , he'd even accepted that she had. when a person vanished without a trace , it usually meant they didn't want to be found. his dad had done it successfully decades ago , and his mother did the day he turned eighteen. he was used to people leaving , but he had no idea what to do when they came back. he'd only ever seen one other person come back , and that was gus. that was different , though. he didn't bother looking for her , he was too busy occupying himself with raising a child on his own with absolutely no preparation. he felt panicked and he wasn't certain what to do with himself. he couldn't recall the last time he'd been so uneasy.
he didn't want to talk to her , but he knew that he could only avoid reality for so long before it became something he was forced to face. truthfully , felix wasn't even certain if he wanted to hear her attempt to justify her disappearance and sudden return to jasper. he was suddenly quite glad he didn't have evelyn with him. ❝ family matters ? ❞ he didn't know much about her family , he hadn't had any contact with any of them over the last five years. he preferred keeping it that way , too. he had his own circle of people who had been there from the beginning and it was more than enough for him. sookie's return shook him up , threw a wrench into the entire life he'd built for himself and evelyn.
he shook his head as she began to apologize , clearing his throat. ❝ no , ❞ he said , his voice cracking slightly. ❝ no amount of apologies will ever make any of this okay. ❞ they might not have been a couple , but they were tied together for the rest of their lives through evelyn. when she disappeared , his heart ached for his daughter. ❝ you left. ❞ he scoffed , tongue sweeping across his lips in frustration. ❝ do you have any idea how much being abandoned hurts ? sorry isn't some sort of magical band - aid , sookie. ❞
the holiday lights downtown feel aggressive; too bright, too cheerful. white lights wrapped around branches, wreaths in shop windows, bells on doors that jingle every time someone comes or goes. the air smells like pine and sugar and cold. she hadn’t meant to linger. her hands are tucked into the sleeves of her coat, fingers curled tight around nothing, breath fogging in front of her as she waits outside the bakery she doesn’t need anything from. sookie keeps glancing up the street without meaning to.
that’s when she sees him.
felix henderson looks … solid. broader than she remembers, somehow. or maybe just heavier with purpose. there’s a steadiness to the way he moves now. her chest tightens instantly, reflexive, like her body remembers before her brain can catch up. sookie's gaze drops first, instinctively, already scanning the space around him. a stroller. a small hand. flash of pink or red or anything that might mean — nothing. her heart stutters anyway.
for half a second, sookie considers turning away. pretending she didn’t see him. letting this be another near - miss, another quiet mercy. but it’s too late ... he’s close enough now that it would be obvious. cowardly. so she stops.
really stops. plants her feet on the sidewalk like she’s bracing against wind, shoulders drawn in, posture careful. when she looks back up at him, her expression is composed but fragile around the edges; a practiced calm that doesn’t quite reach her eyes.
“ felix, ” she says, softly. not a greeting. just his name, like she’s testing whether it still belongs in her mouth. her eyes flick past him again before she can stop herself, scanning the street with quiet panic. the holiday noise swells around them. laughter, music spilling from a storefront, someone calling out about hot cider. “ i — ” she exhales, steadying. “ i didn’t know if you’d want to see me. i can go. i just … i didn’t expect — ” she trails off, swallowing hard, finally forcing her attention back to him. “ you look well, ” sookie adds, because it’s safe. because there are a thousand things she could say and none of them feel survivable. her hands tighten in her sleeves as the lights blink overhead, waiting for him to decide what happens next.
downtown jasper, mid - evening with felix henderson.
felix was the kind of guy who did plenty of shopping for his daughter throughout the year , but he still managed to find himself out last minute , too. evelyn was with mallory , which wasn't out of the ordinary for her. he wanted to provide his daughter with the best life imaginable and felt the need to go out and get more gifts for her because putting a smile on evelyn's face was a priority for him. he knew he might've spoiled her , but that didn't matter to him. in his eyes , she deserved it. he was wrapping up most of his shopping , he planned on making one last stop and calling it a night. he had the destination in mind and everything , was slowly making his way over there.
then , he heard it. a voice calling his name. one that sounded vaguely familiar , a voice he couldn't quite place until he looked in the direction of the sound. as soon as his eyes landed on her , everything in him stopped. his chest felt tight , invisible walls closing in around him. felix nearly lost his grip on his bags , eyes widening in surprise. he took a small step back , head shaking in confusion. an array of emotions flooded through him , a lump settling in his throat. words felt impossible to come by , he hadn't seen her in over five years , he was entirely convinced he'd never see sookie again. he'd never prepared himself for any sort of scenario in which she resurfaced.
the man blinked , a strangled noise escaping his throat. he felt ambushed , had the strong urge to promptly turn on his heels and walk off in the opposite direction but he didn't think that would accomplish much of anything. he would rather face things in that moment and make his own stance clear. he managed to swallow the lump that'd settled in his throat , lips parting slightly. ❝ what the hell are you doing here ? ❞ he managed to get out , his tone defensive and guarded. his hands felt clammy and he was aware of just how much his heart was racing within his chest. ❝ you ... you don't get to just show up here after over five years of silence. ❞

𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 : sunrise park !
he was still familiarizing himself with the town of jasper. there were many quaint little establishments , much different than what he was accustomed to back in sacramento. gabriel didn't necessarily mind it , but it was certainly an adjustment. the hustle and bustle of the city he'd spent decades in was gone , but the serenity of a smaller town that replaced it wasn't so horrible. he just ensured that he kept himself as busy and distracted as possible. once again , he tossed himself into his work and established a routine of sorts. he'd ended work early for the day , though , and had wrapped up his gym session as well. he wasn't quite ready to go home , so he found himself nursing a cup of coffee as he strolled through sunrise park , trying to take it all in. he had no intentions of moving again anytime soon , so he was trying to see what jasper had to offer on the off chance that he suddenly decided to become a more social person.
he recognized the face that came into view relatively quickly. pretty , kind smile. he'd seen her around town a few times while he was out running the essential errands and when he chose to visit prestige tea. he'd made small talk with her , even knew her by name. he didn't know much about her , but he did know that she was sweet. ❝ oh , hey , mallory , ❞ he greeted her warmly as he waved with his free hand. gabriel didn't typically go and approach people if he didn't deem it necessary , but he could make an exception. he always enjoyed his conversations with the woman , and he liked the idea of having some company for a little bit. ❝ didn't think i'd run into you here. how are you doing ? ❞ he asked , offering her a small smile.

did I just see 𝐊𝐄𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐓𝐇 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐈 walking down the street? no, that was GABRIEL "GABE" MIN! HE is a FIFTY year old who identifies as a CIS MAN. I hear that they spend their days as an ATTORNEY at BEACON LAW. last I heard, they’ve been in town for TWO MONTHS and were living in POPPY LANE. some people would say that they’re DISCIPLINED & WITHDRAWN , but I wouldn’t judge a book by its cover!

regarding › tidbits.
gabriel min was born december 22nd , 1975 in boston massachusetts and he spent ages 1 to 8 living in the state before his father was offered a better paying position in oregon where he lived until age 18 and was preparing to head off to college.
while he was in school he strived to be the best that he could be. gabriel pushed himself as far as a person could , joining extracurriculars and taking advanced courses to make his name carry as much weight as he could. it ended up paying off as he became valedictorian of his graduating class.
from an early age , he knew what he wanted to do. he was going to become a lawyer and he had been unwavering in that stance throughout all of his years.
got accepted to stanford university and jumped at the opportunity to attend. he excelled while there and wound up getting a position in an incredible law firm. he elected to move his parents to california once he'd gotten himself settled.
worked a few high profile cases in his career that he's quite proud of.
lost his fiance in a tragic accident twenty years ago and he's never bothered trying to find love since. he dived into his work instead and used it as a means of avoiding pain. he's been doing that for decades even if he knows its not a healthy coping mechanism.
his work and taking care of his family became his entire life. he never made time for much of anything else.
moved to jasper just a couple months ago following the death of both of his parents. there was too much tragedy attached to sacramento for him and he needed to get away from the weight of his grief.
he's a kind person he is just incredibly emotionally guarded because he's lost enough people in his life.
regarding › connections.
fellow attorneys ; just some other people who work at beacon law. professional but friendly relationships.
neighbors ; he is new to jasper / poppy lane so perhaps some friendly faces to get acquainted with ?
gym partner ; he's someone who is distracting himself from his own grief by doing as much as possible. he doesn't enjoy sitting alone with his thoughts so he practices avoidance as much as possible. ; taken by javier.
new friends ; pretty self explanatory. he's a newcomer so maybe someone trying to be friendly / show him around.
someone trying to get to know him / break through the walls ( f pref & 40+ ) ; look he needs someone to remind him how to be HUMAN cause he operates on auto pilot way too much and just represses too many emotions the man hasn't been emotionally involved with someone in over twenty years okay.
his sibling ; this connection will be submitted to the main soon enough ! i don't have too many ideas for it just that the sibling is between their late thirties and mid forties.
general acquaintances ; people he's familiarizing himself with , etc. he's still new-ish to jasper so he's getting to know people.
felix was practically part of the family , so mallory rarely blinked an eye at how casual he was in her home. she , too , was guilty of the same when she visited the henderson home. thus , it was second nature to find felix comfortably in her kitchen after she returned from checking on the kids. “ tea , ” she answered. “ my favorite black one , ” she motioned vaguely , knowing he would know what she was referring to without further explanation. she was a creature of habit , mostly , and felix probably had her routine memorized as well as she did by this point. “ oh , the same as last year , ” she responded , though there was a bit of hesitancy in her voice. the holidays were always a bit rough when navigating a lingering grief she seemingly didn't acknowledge. “ already bought a ham that i doubt olivia will eat , ” she shrugged , like it wasn't an obvious tradition in her household. “ so i expected to have leftovers if you and evelyn don't join , ” she chuckled softly. “ i don't mind handling dinner if you deal with everything after , ” she smirked , already imagining the sugar high they would inevitably allow as a sort of christmas present. “ but we may need to prepare for more than one movie , in case someone doesn't agree … ”
her home was practically his second home. it was easy to move around like he belonged there , and it was comforting to have someplace else he felt like he did belong. mallory was the one person he was closest to , someone he knew he could seek out life advice from. ❝ tea it is , ❞ felix stated , nodding. he grabbed her favorite and selected chamomile for himself before he set up the water to heat up for them. he'd spent enough time with her to know pretty much everything there was to know about another person. besides evelyn , she'd been the one constant and he made an active effort to pay attention to mallory. ❝ same as last year ? that's a safe way to play it. ❞ he wouldn't press , wouldn't attempt to venture into the territory of her grief even if he was curious. ❝ still not into the ham , huh ? i can't say i blame her. it's definitely not my go to , but i'm not gonna complain either way. ❞ he nodded , giving her a smile. ❝ yeah , definitely. oh ... do you think you can make mac and cheese , though ? evelyn's been on a kick. i've got dessert , games and movies covered. i can even get some of those hot chocolate bombs for the kids. ❞ felix laughed softly , but knew just how right she was. ❝ i'll make sure i have a whole christmas marathon prepared. ❞
“ the holidays are fun … at least , usually , ” gus mused with a gentle smile. he was aware how delicate feelings around the holidays could be ; memories could be happy or sad or even bittersweet. still , he chose to try and embrace the more fun and festive side of the season when he could. “ well , i can't wait to read it then , ” he chuckled softly. “ help me decide what to do and what to avoid , i guess. ” he was curious what gianna may include , anyhow. even more so , he wondered what was new since his absence and what might still be the same all these years later. a laugh escaped , one that was perhaps a bit louder than intended. “ stubborn ? that's an understatement. ” he looked around , almost a little bit embarrassed. gus adored his students , but there was no question that they were still quite the handful. “ i , uh … ” he nodded , rubbing the back of his neck as he looked back at the other. “ i'm glad to be back. just trying to get back into the swing of things , y'know ? ” his smile turned sheepish. “ like you said … been awhile … ”
❝ yeah , they usually are. ❞ at least they were for her. gianna wasn't naive enough to believe that everyone else shared the same sentiment , though. the holidays were difficult for some people and she always tried her best to be respectful of that. if someone didn't enjoy the holidays , she was always prepared to change the subject and ensure she avoided all mentions of them. ❝ i can tell you one thing i do recommend avoiding is waiting any longer to get your shopping done. things are only going to get more chaotic from here on out so get it done like this week if you can. trust me .... you wanna skip out on that madness. a lot of people forget how to act like decent human beings. ❞ she didn't have much experience with children , so she'd have to take gus at his word. ❝ something tells me they just get more stubborn with age , huh ? ❞ she smiled and nodded as he spoke. ❝ what made you decide to come back after all these years if you don't mind me asking ? ❞ if he didn't want to discuss it , she'd completely understand. she figured that she'd still ask if he did want to take the opportunity to talk about it , though.

gus nodded , trying to contain his smile best he could. “ no , no … you should be proud , ” he insisted. he knew parents were obviously biased of their own kids , but he didn't think he was exaggerating in the slightest with his praises about evelyn. “ she's great. promise. you're doing a great job. ” maybe he was a bit biased himself , given he knew felix before fatherhood. even if he hadn't predicted any of this , watching his former friend now , somehow it made perfect sense. there was clear love , and suddenly gus couldn't imagine anything else. “ oh , i highly doubt i'll get away from this year unscathed , “ he let out an amused laugh. ” if i'm not chasing that one … “ he pointed a look in the little girl's direction , but his exaggerated expression only contracted the idea that she was even close to a potential problem. ” i'm chasing someone else. i'm probably safe until spring , but … “ he shrugged before holding up both hands , fingers crossed. he doubted he would actually end up in the hospital ; but a twisted ankle and plenty of paper cuts were surely in the foreseeable future for the teacher. ” you're telling me … got a few kids who don't eat if the sandwich is cut wrong , “ he chuckled softly. safe to say , the extra ( picky eater approved ) snacks he kept stocked came in handy more often than he'd admit. ” good , “ he nodded as his choice of establishment was accepted. at the following question , he hummed in thought. ” well … does six pm give you enough time ? "
he never could've imagined that his life would be what it was five years ago. he wouldn't change it for the world , though. he smiled at gus's words , nodding in acknowledgement. the other wasn't wrong. he had every reason to be proud. he had built a pretty spectacular life for himself and he had a great kid. sometimes he doubted himself , but he suspected that was pretty typical for a parent who just wanted to give their kid everything. sometimes felix wondered if his own parents had regrets for the way they did things , but he never let himself think about them for too long. ❝ thanks , gus. that ... that means a lot. ❞ he chuckled at the male's statement , gaze shifting back to his daughter for a moment before fixating on the man again. ❝ then let's hope it isn't anything too serious , ❞ he stated instead. ❝ just the stereotypical injuries and whatnot , you know ? ❞ he thought it took a great deal of patience to be a teacher , so he had to commend gus on his career choice. it definitely wasn't one felix would handle well. he sincerely doubted he'd be seeing gus in the emergency room anytime soon , and he hoped he wasn't wrong about that. ❝ sandwich cutting is a very serious deal , ❞ he told him , laughing. ❝ first it was no crusts ... simple enough. but then ... once i got a butterfly shaped cookie cutter ... evelyn would only eat butterfly - shaped sandwiches for months. i still keep it on standby in case she ever decides that's what she prefers again. ❞ he nodded , giving gus another smile. ❝ six sounds perfect. ❞

𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 : mallory's home !
when it came to mallory , felix always felt at home. he mad himself comfortable in her home , moved around if freely and comfortably. there weren't many people he could do that with , but she was definitely one of them. things had always been effortless with her , and it was something felix was incredibly grateful for. there weren't many people in his life that he trusted so having mallory around meant the world to him. he helped himself to her cabinet , pulling out two mugs and setting them down on the counter. ❝ coffee or tea ? ❞ he questioned as he turned his head towards her. it might've been her kitchen , but he spent enough time in it to know his way around. the least he could do was offer to make her drink for her. ❝ oh , and what are your christmas plans with the kids ? i was planning on keeping it pretty lowkey with evelyn. do you think we should do a joint dinner type of thing ? we could end the night with christmas cookies and a movie if you're free. ❞

"sometimes gingerbread can be too gingery." gen agrees with a nod, fingers tapping lightly against the side of her drink's decorated paper cup. "peppermint's definitely classic. i do love a peppermint mocha." though sometimes those were too minty too. it really was a goldilocks situation with the flavored drinks. "well, you do meet people in person from the apps at some point. at least ideally. obviously not today, but." gen shrugs, waving it off. "i fear that i don't have the best taste in romantic partners, it seems."
❝ which is exactly why i'm sort of wishing i'd taken that thought into consideration before i ordered it. ❞ he would still finish it , though , because he'd already spent money on it and the beverage was tolerable enough. ❝ it's usually the one i go for when i decide to buy into the holiday beverage craze. ❞ he nodded as she spoke , considering her perspective. ❝ sure , that's the eventual goal. i still think apps are dangerous , though. it's easy to lie and fake a profile , right ? you're better off meeting someone off of the apps. ❞ he chuckled , tongue peeking out to sweep across his lips. ❝ yeah , i've made a few questionable choices in romantic partners in the past. it's ... a learning experience. ❞
