⋆。𖦹°‧★ Being Ashley Barrett’s personal assistant may have bought you killer networking opportunities in Vought but it's also made you the fixation of the most dangerous man in the nation. Homelander receives you with stars in his eyes but you would never know it. You live in a constant state of minimal terror with the supe strutting around your workplace.
⋆。𖦹°‧★ He's developed a pavlovian response to the scent of your perfume and pauses during meetings to inhale its remnants after you've left the room. He's left with a near orgasmic expression on his face every time. Once, while you were taking meeting minutes, Homelander stared at you blankly. You were certain he was contemplating snapping your neck but he was just mesmerized by the pulse of aroma fluttering at the base of your throat.
⋆。𖦹°‧★ You've never held a real conversation with him but he's stricken by the idea of you. He uses his super hearing to eavesdrop on your private conversations and gets irrationally jealous of anybody you mention with affection.
⋆。𖦹°‧★ Homelander finds your fear of him both intoxicating and frustrating. He wants you to love him but he only inspires terror when he steps into your personal space.
⋆。𖦹°‧★ He interprets your avoidance as a game. He doesn't realize you're simply trying to survive corporate day-to-day. He's only focused on his own agony and figuring out how to possess you without breaking you in the process.
⋆。𖦹°‧★ Homelander finds himself on the roof most evenings to watch your car leave the parking garage. He tracks the sound of your heartbeat until you're miles away and he hates that he needs you. He also hates that you fear him. Most of all, he hates that he's never felt more alive than when he's scaring the hell out of you.

just finished it, going to sleep, but
butcher's finger pulling away from the trigger just before he was shot was such a gut punching, beautiful, tragic, bittersweet end to his arc and it is exactly what I wanted.
these past two seasons have been mid, but underneath it all they maintained a lock on what butcher and hughie's story was, and how it was going to end, and most importantly what it all fucking means.
that glimmer of a chance to choose a different path, too late, when you're already destined to bleed out in your canary's arms, it hurts and it's terrible and it's 100% true to life
it's how so many people never break out of the generational trauma that leads them down the same path their fathers walked, until someone is killing them or arresting them or running from them because someone chose not to burn for them anymore
it had to be hughie, too.
time to sleep and dream of a world where people like butcher can get the help they needed.
Okay, well. That was a finale, yep.
some initial thoughts:
I didn't particularly like the direction with Cipher/Godolkin in the final episode. I think Hamish gave us a certain perception of the character as genre savvy, and they stepped slightly out of the established characterization in order to push him into making poor choices.
I still think you can square the circle of his fall from grace without forcing him to be stupid. But rather than spend the time to establish the ways his thinking would have led him to his downfall, they instead had him completely write off everything Sage was trying to say.
The direction with Sage still interests me. As a trans man who's suffered a lot of stupidity at the hands of obliviously confident cis men, I deeply understand how she got to this point.
There's a bone deep desperation for human connection that you feel when you struggle to connect with people on an intellectual level. For all his flaws, Godolkin was close to matching her—or at least, close enough for her to connect with him.
The writing has taken a downturn. On both shows. I don't know if it's permanent, but I do think the impending finale of The Boys and deeper interest in expanding the IP of the series has led to an unfortunate shift. I'm curious to see if any of the writers or executive story editors changed after season 3.
I guess we'll see how it goes.
PS: DOUG IS ALIVE UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE 🔪🔪🔪
We know Thomas Godolkin was a Nazi. I don't know what it is yet, but I feel like there was something to how Doug was forced to eat those protein shakes for 15+ years, and how he'd bike to work, and how he's generally a way better aesthetic fit for eugenicist physical ideals than Godolkin himself.
Godolkin is blonde, but he's a beanpole, and we know he's hated himself for being useless before.
Thankfully the show might explore Doug's headspace, and maybe we might get a little insight from that angle. I'm painfully curious how nearly two decades looking back at Doug in the mirror has affected Godolkin's sense of self.

Dean Cipher/Doug Brightbill (Hamish Linklater) in every episode of Gen V S2 Episode 7: The Head and The Heart
I already know they're not going to waste screen time on Doug—but I really wish they would, because in about 20 seconds flat, I was already deeply invested in him as a person.
That's what Hamish Linklater brings to the screen. Doug was weeping that he didn't want to die when Cipher was finally out of his head, and I immediately wanted to see what 15 plus years of that kind of control does to a person.
I don't want to assume that Ethan is going to be completely outclassed by Hamish, but just from the initial few minutes at the end of the last episode, I have some doubts.
It would also be good to see some human involvement in gen v beyond their complete oppression at the hands of supes. Doug knew that there was no Cipher. He could know more; he could even know Sage's plans altogether.
Lastly: Did anyone catch that it wasn't Cipher giving up control of Doug, but Polarity's shockwave that did it? Subtle difference, but potentially important.
Eric Kripke confirmed that Doug will appear in in Episode 8:
I also caught a clip where Hamish was asked directly about Doug’s trauma by an interviewer. So it sounds like the finale will dive in, at least a little, to exactly what you're hoping to see – especially in terms of how "the body keeps the score," as Hamish put it.
I AM SO HAPPY TO BE WRONG YOU HAVE NO IDEA

it was a good run cipher nation...
(I'm just not convinced the new guy can pull off his disaffected, cynical resentment without hamming it up or lacking a sense of humor. but we'll see.)
i miss dean cipher in doug form already 💔
