After that fateful evening when Cate had shown up in Indira's office, not quite herself and all over the dean, things had changed between them.
Cate wasn't sure how to feel about that. Indira seemed to be keeping her distance and Cate could feel the sting of every last inch like a hot nail in her heart. She hated this but mostly she hated herself for letting herself get to that point.
She tried to come up with ways to fix this but she couldn't think of one single good one. Did she apologize? Did she pretend nothing happened? What should she do?
Andre and Luke invited her out to a party and she went with them, not really planning on enjoying the evening. She was miserable, and she drank down everything they handed her. Despite her supe nature, drinking the equivalent of a whole handle of vodka and several beers, did catch up to her.
She found herself stumbling away from the party, feet absentmindedly taking her somewhere familiar. She wasn't even aware of where she was until her head was banging against the door. She leaned against it and almost fell into Indira when she opened the door.
It was late on a Friday night. What was Indira still doing here?
"Cate?" Alarm was present in Indira's voice. She didn't like seeing Cate like this. "Are you alright?"
"No," Cate mumbled into Indira's shirt, clinging to the back of it so hard it almost tore. Tears sprung up to her eyes. "I'm so sorry. I'm sorry, so sorry..." she blabbered on without making much sense.
"Cate, what did you take this time?"
"Nothing, I'm just so sorry," she continued, tears streaming down her face. "I ruined everything between us. I fucked it up. I'm fucked up. For thinking, for trying-"
Indira held Cate back by her shoulders, trying to get a good look at her. Cate rubbed at her eyes, hiccuping and sniffling. Her blue eyes glimmered with pain and shame. "You didn't ruin anything, my darling girl."
Cate whimpered at this. How she longed to hear those words. Those lovely words. But she didn't believe them. "You've avoided me. You haven't touched me or hugged me since that moment. I'm worried you hate me."
"I could never hate you," Indira said so softly that Cate's inside melted. Her brown eyes were sincere and firm on Cate. She cupped her chin lightly with her hand. "Cate, look at me. Know that I mean what I say. I could never hate you."
"I made things awkward between us. I k-kissed you," Cate sniffled. And the worst part was she wanted to do it again, over and over. Indira's face grew conflicted before she sighed heavily. She pulled Cate forward by her chin and pressed her lips to Cate's own.
A rush of heat filled Cate, and before she could register what was happening, Indira had moved away. "There, now we're even Cate." She held Cate by her hand and Cate numbly stumbled into the kitchen after her, other hand going up to her mouth. "Let's get you some water and some medicine for that hangover you're going to have," Indira said, looking into the cabinet and refusing to let go of Cate's hand.
Indira had kissed her. She smiled softly to herself.
Maybe Cate hadn't ruined things after all.
