“And what would be the purpose of that?”

“So we could see the stars better.” 

Kuvira crossed her arms. “Do you have any idea how much work I have to do?” 

“It won’t take long, we got here early, and we’ll be able to focus better once we’ve gone.” He counted off each reason on a finger, clearly satisfied with his own rhetoric. 

“Speak for yourself. I am perfectly focused.” 

“If you say so, love,” he told her. 

They went back to work, but in a few minutes, Kuvira was looking out the window once again. When Baatar met her gaze, wearing an amused expression, she bent metal blinds shut. 

“So should I bring a car around?” 

Kuvira sighed; he always seemed to find a way to distract her. She set her documents down with slightly more force than was necessary. “We’re going for twenty minutes. Thirty tops.” 

If Baatar had been trying to hide his satisfied grin, he failed miserably. “Meet outside in fifteen minutes?” 

“That sounds reasonable.” 

Always punctual to a fault, Kuvira was out the door in twelve minutes—having replaced her uniform and pauldrons with a short sleeved dance outfit from Zaofu. Baatar was already waiting for her in the car. 

When she slid into the passenger seat, he took her hand and brought it to his lip.

“You look beautiful,” he said. 

Kuvira shook her head, and tried her hardest to hold back a grin. “Just drive.” 

As the jeep eased its way over the sand dunes, a companionable silence fell between them. Kuvira glanced up at the stars, gleaming and magnificent, as a cool breeze sent stray hairs flying from her bun. 

After he brought the car to a stop on a dune with a particularly good view of the horizon, Baatar tucked a few loose strands behind her ear. 

“I don’t know why you insisted on going on this drive,” she said. “You’re barely even looking at the stars.”
