Figured I'd drop another burnfield timeloop AU scene that I recently re-read and was fond of~ another cute scene, but you can imagine that Claire's been through the wringer (I think this is loop 21) and she needs all the soft moments she can get :')
āHey. Whatās the first thing you wanna do when we get out?ā Steve chatters excitedly from next to her.
The question catches her off-guard. āLetās figure out the āgetting outā bit first,ā she says back, continuing to scavenge through her stored belongings. Thankfully he doesnāt notice the weight each word carries on her conscience.
āYouāre so boring,ā Steve drawls, leaning against the wall. He pushes his bangs aside with a hand still firmly gripping onto an SMG ā she really needs to remind him about gun safety.
āWell then, you start us off,ā she replies, turning to him. Their eyes lock onto each other briefly, before Steve looks away in surprise. āWhatās your plan once youāre out?ā
He seems unprepared for the question, brow knitting in deep thought. āI⦠I want to find a big patch of grass and lie down.ā
She canāt stop her snort in time. āBig dreams for a big guy.ā
Steveās cheeks burn scarlet. āShut up,ā he whines, āI didnāt have enough time to think of an answer.ā
She softens her gaze. āSorry. Thatās really sweet ā it just threw me off guard. I thought youād be thinking about crazier things, thatās all.ā
āIām not that deranged,ā he grumbles, tucking his chin even further.
She turns to him fully now. āTell me about that big patch of grass. Are you going to take a nap? Have a picnic?ā
He scoffs, though itās mostly in embarrassment. āI just⦠wanna get out of here. Be free. No more zombies, no more wardens telling me what to do, no nothing. I can figure out everything else after that.ā
He jumps in surprise when she sidles up next to him on the wall. āWell then, would you mind if I joined you? Once we got out?ā
āYouāre awfully invested for someone who just teased me about this.ā His face twitches in moody confusion. It transforms into something much warmer when she slips her fingers in between his.
āI know a place,ā she says, thinking back to the rolling hills of her childhood, āItās a big hill overlooking a lake. Thereās no one else for miles, and if you time it just right, you can see the sunset creep over the water with colors you canāt find anywhere else.ā
āThat sounds nice. Real nice.ā His voice is quiet now, with none of the bravado or petulance heard before.
āPromise that youāll come see it with me?ā she asks, realizing sheās nearly choked up too. Steve turns to her, a quick flicker of fear dancing in his eyes. The concept of āpromisesā was always touchy for him ā haunted by betrayed pledges from those he loved, guilty about ones that he himself couldnāt fulfill. She wouldnāt bring that word up for a shallow reason.
But damn it, theyāre going to see that sunset together.
He squeezes her hand tightly. āPromise.ā
