Screw R+L=J!
Okay, so, don't hate me yet. You see, I do see the sense in this theory. Truly, I do. The problem is, it's just not the way I want to see Jon. Jon should be Lord Commander of the Night's Watch for another two books, slowly rebuilding all castle ruins of the Watch and bringing the Night's Watch back to the glory it used to have, all those years ago (else, why hint at the Watch's glorious past so much?). Also, he is a Stark in blood, heritage and everything. His warg powers also make it unlikely that he's a Targaryen. Fun fact: The two greatest and most plausible theories, R+L=J and The Great Northern Conspiracy utterly and completely conflict with each other. Let's see how that one turns out!
Davos knelt. “If I have offended, take my head. I’ll die as I lived, your loyal man. But hear me first. Hear me for the sake of the onions I brought you, and the fingers you took.” Stannis slid Lightbringer from its scabbard. Its glow filled the chamber. “Say what you will, but say it quickly.” The muscles in the king’s neck stood out like cords. Davos fumbled inside his cloak and drew out the crinkled sheet of parchment. It seemed a thin and flimsy thing, yet it was all the shield he had. “A King’s Hand should be able to read and write. Maester Pylos has been teaching me.” He smoothed the letter flat upon his knee and began to read by the light of the magic sword.
What does Stannis offer you? Vengeance. Vengeance for my sons and yours, for your husbands and your fathers and your brothers. Vengeance for your murdered lord, your murdered king, your butchered princes. Vengeance!
Davos II, A Dance with Dragons
Let's just all take a moment to appreciate that Davos named one of his sons after King Stannis.

“Even dressed in silk and velvet, an ape remains an ape,” Ser Axell said. “A wiser prince would have known that you cannot send an ape to do a man’s work.” The queen’s men laughed, and several grinned at Davos. I am no ape, he’d thought. I am as much a lord as you, and a better man. (...) He might have lost his fines and his luck, but he was no ape in velvet. He was a King's Hand.

Why Eddard Sucks
I might get a lot of hate on this post. Just let me explain. Ned has a great sense of honor and duty. He values honor above duty, though, unlike our Onion Man who just goes back to walking in rags through taverns and smuggling himself into the city he needs to win over. Eddard's worst case of honorphilia was his stance on Jaime. Jaime saved tens of thousands of innocent lives, the entire realms, by murdering the Mad King. He was called that for a reason. Yet Ned (and unfortunately, many others with him) view Jaime as the ultimate form of dishonor and oathbreaking. Horrible. Really.
The man was smirking as he told the tale. Davos wanted to peel his lips off with a knife. “Ser, may I have your name?” “Ser Jared, of House Frey.” “Jared of House Frey, I name you liar.”

Davos won't die.
He won't die. Ever. Trust me on this. George R.R. Martin wouldn't create such a character to just die on a random quest. He'll continue being the ultimately true Hand of the ultimately true King, being badass and convincing the entire world to join Stannis.
And if he does ever die, it'll be while saving the entire world from a great evil, or while saving Stannis from Melisandre (Maester Cressen tried that.)
Why Stannis should win
Okay, this has probably been said many times before, but I feel the need to post it here.
The true reason Stannis Baratheon should sit the Iron Throne is because he puts the good of the realm above his own. Most people apparently can not see this, or blame him for the whole R'hllor thing.
He is the best ruler they could possibly wish in Westeros. Smart, determined and someone who wants nothing more than to rule a stable kingdom. Sure, he fights this war, but only to secure a peaceful rule. After that, he'll be the best freaking king ever.
Stannis and R'hllor
One of the biggest complaints about Stannis's awesomeness is that he worships a 'demon god'. That's based on guesswork (just like this post, as it's just a theory), because there are no Stannis POV chapters, so we'll never know his true intentions.
As much as Stannis believes in R'hllor's powers, I don't think he sees him as 'his god'. He merely makes use of the deity's powers in his quest to take the Iron Throne.
As said many times before, both in the books and by fan analysis, he will do whatever it takes to win the Iron Throne, including burning the sept on Dragonstone and keeping Melisandre with him at all times as his second most trusted advisor (DAVOS IS #1).
Casting of the HBO series
I just finished watching all currently released seasons and reading all currently released books. And seriously! The actors and casting of the series is SO EXTREMELY ACCURATE to the characters! I can barely name a single character that does not have an excellent displaying actor! Cersei, Tyrion, Davos, Sandor, Jaime, Arya, Robb, Jon, Theon, Stannis, Eddard, Renly, Catelyn, Varys, Daenerys, I have no idea, every single character has a perfect depiction! Just one single complaint: Petyr Baelish. Sorry HBO, you did it wrong. Want to see a true Littlefinger? Check out his page on AWOIAF, the fan-made depiction. Excellent.
