i don’t mean to be rude but generally how do people who don’t study survive. because to me it is just absolutely everything. i guess that’s because i’ve never had more than 5 months of break from study since i was 6 but my point stands
people hear me say i’m in exam finals and they go “omg i wouldn’t want to be you”. okay that’s perfect bc i wouldn’t want to be you either. like i don’t enjoy exams but i prefer it over… stagnation. even in my career, law involves the constant learning of new things, constant new experience and information. there’s plenty other careers that are the same but like. in retail? you work as a manager in a clothing store? part of a massive global company where you have 0 input on decisions? 9-5, you have no time or energy to pursue something… more?
and it’s one thing to work a 9-5 like that but go home and learn a language or do an art or develop a skill, but i mean people who go home and like. watch tv.
genuinely, that is my worst nightmare. being dead-end. stagnant in life. so many seem perfectly happy with it and i just don’t understand. i feel i want to ask them “what do you do next?” but i know there’s no answer besides “keep going”. tldr i feel like im bragging when i say i have exam prep to do in front of people living like that
law school lecturers are like “yeah this lecture we will be covering what’s assessable on the final exam, so here’s some tips:
read the question
answer the question
that’s everything i can give you. hope this really helps :) good luck :) and remember not to stress about it. see you next trimester!”
'Use IRAC but also absolutely do not use IRAC'

one of the most boring lessons I’ve learned is that when a task feels overwhelming, you just have to start doing it. Even if you’re not sure how to do 90% of it, look for one small component that seems close and start there. Sometimes it’s reading one article on the topic, or searching one related term, or literally just googling how to do the task. Do anything other than thinking about it. The process of working on a thing inherently makes it less scary.

I’ve been sick lately, i got sick in the two weeks leading up to my exams. I was well on the way to being prepared for my exams, but sickness made concentrating and being conscious such a nightmare that i couldn’t study.
I ended up getting a medical certificate to show I’d been sick for a long period and successfully get deferred exams! thank god. bad news though is that now my exams for this semester won’t be done until 2-3 weeks into next semester.
Today is the first day I’m finally well enough to study again. definitely being kind on myself getting back into the rhythm, but managed my typical 3 hours! Keeping up 3 hours a day, I believe I’ll do well on these exams AND have plenty of time to prepare for next semester ♥️
Sticking to warm teas and making sure to get lots of sleep whenever I feel I need it.

[sic] in academic context is always so fucking hilarious to me bc its a shorthand, professional way of saying "no yeah he said exactly that. that's not me. he did that" especially where there's no typo, its just something so absurd that the author wants to remind you that this isnt them speaking, its this other insane guy.
Update: add Alchemised to the stack of books I finished <3
oops obviously added that to the wrong post lol. meant to be on my year review post
Guys I’m DNFing Jane Eyre around 1/4 the way through.
Does it get good or is the whole book just like this??? I literally loved the works of Anne and Emily Brontë so much but Jane Eyre is so… different. It feels like a modern romance and unfortunately I have 0 interest in romance.
I see some of the feminist themes, which I normally love, but it’s so few and far between and often has so little relation to the plot, I’d honestly rather just read through the goodreads quotes. I have like… two pages tabbed so far because nothing seems of any great significance.
Am I tripping and should I keep reading or??? is this just not the book for me? I don’t like romances: I prefer gothic classics generally speaking. I enjoy anything with feminist themes but? is it worth it?
I might leave a list of a few of my favourite classics in the comments if anyone wants more context on what i enjoy
✎ how to study like hermione granger ⌁ the hermione mindset
i know we're all happy to be on winter break, and happy we completed a semester of school!
however, i think it's all time for us to prepare for the next semester, one of my most popular series on my blog is my next semester prep series, and you all LOVED it.
i decided i want to make a new, rebranded version of that series, by slowly easing into it with some posts about academic icons LIKE HERMIONE GRANGER
this first post is about her mindset! the next post will be about how she ACTUALLY studies and habits she'd use.
i notice people like to reduce her to stress and perfectionism, and while that's true, reading ahead isn't anxiety at all, it's affection with her academics. and discipline does not = misery
hermione granger isn't obsessed with studying, she's devoted to understanding her academics. she's actually calm long before the chaos starts. hermione studies before things feel urgent, she reads because she WANTS to know, and she trusts knowledge more than luck.
the hermione mindset (this matters more than techniques)
studying isn't something you do to punish yourself for not knowing enough. it is NOT a consequence or a moral test or proof that you're "good" or "bad" at learning. just know that intelligence doesn't need to be performed or constantly displayed to be real. it grows through attention, and patience and repetition. preparation, then it becomes an act of care. IT LITERALLY IS THE WAY of making life gentler for your future self. when you actually study from curiosity, learning stops feeling like something you "HAVE' to do and starts feeling like another way to trust yourself. just like how hermione treated it.
✧ studying as devotion, not discipline
discipline alone is masculine-coded grind culture bs that leads to resentment. devotion? feminine, flowing, eternal. it sustains you through exams and life. hermione studies because knowledge matters to her, understanding feels meaningful and grounding, not because she's shaming herself into productivity. her effort comes from respect for her own mind, not from harsh self-criticism or fear or failure.
✒︎ studying is an act of loyalty to your curiosity
✒︎ learning because it matters to YOU. not because you're afraid of consequences
✒︎ studying as something you protect time for
✒︎ showing up even when no one is watching
✒︎ change "forcing focus" to "falling in love with the material
✒︎ instead of avoiding failure, try to honor your potential.
✒︎ time is not an enemy, use it as an offering, every hour at your desk is a gift to your future-you LITERALYY. like hermione sacrificing fun for mastery because it fulfills her soul AND led her to being the greatest witch of her time.
✒︎ treat studying as a relationship you nurture over time.
✒︎ discipline says " no netflix till done" but devotion says "this book is more enchanting than any show anyway"
try to make studying feel like some sort of sacred ceremony, literally. this is game-changer because it rewires your brain for joy, not dread
✒︎ create a knowledge altar on your desk. not only functional, DEVOTIONAL. like stack of books, add some candles, fresh flowers, a vision board for your academic-self. treat it like your own hogwarts library
✒︎ PASSION-MAPPING. omg i discovered this recently and i'm IN LOVE. map subjects to what you love. ex: history? devotion to stories of powerful women, for science? devotion to psychology
✧ caring openly is a strength
caring openly is one of hermione's strengths, even when it makes her stand out, she doesn't try to soften her enthusiasm any way, to fit in or hide her effort to seem effortless. she raises her hand, asks questions, and lets her interest be seen. try to reject irony culture, allow yourself to care without cushioning it with jokes or self-deprecation. pretending not to care is NOT maturity, it really is just self-abandonment. you don't need to apologize for effort.
✒︎ let your interest be visible without self-mockery
✒︎ please try to resist the urge to downplay how hard you try
✒︎ show up fully instead of halfway
✒︎ caring even when it's uncool or inconvenient
✧ preparation as self-trust
preparation, for hermione, is an expression of DEEP self-trust. she studies with the assumption that her future self will exist, will need support, and will deserve to feel capable rather than overwhelmed.
hermione does not rely on luck, or last-minute panic and cramming, or hope that things will somehow work out. she believes that problems can be understood and solved, especially if you meet them with knowledge instead of fear.
✒︎ study because you intend to show up prepared
✒︎ take it as caring for your future nervous system
✒︎ make a future self-pact. every sunday, write a letter to thursday you (or exam week you, presentation you etcc) listing what you've prepped and why you trust her to shine.
✒︎ get a small pouch/box with essentials, like extra pens, tea bags, printed out notes, summaries, study guides
✒︎ do layered preparation rituals like deep prep - read ahead months early, medium prep - weekly reviews, gentle prep - night before refresh
✒︎ visualize yourself walking through the challenge calm and glowing because you prepared. THIS IS SCIENCE-BACKED MANIFESTATION (do it for exam/test days, presentations, moments when you get your grade back etc)
✒︎ get a boundary prep "no" list. list all the things you decline. like extra plans, doom-scrolling, etc... to protect your study time
✧ intelligence is built, not proven
intelligence, in hermione's world is something you build slowly, it's not something you perform for approval. being wrong does not mean you're bad at studying, and needing to reread or ask questions is not some sort of weakness. it's literal evidence that you're engaging deeply and you're actually LEARNING.
✒︎ intelligence is a practice not a trait
✒︎ allow yourself to be a beginner repeatedly
✒︎ PLEASE separate self-worth from academic performance
✧ respecting your mind
respecting your mind literally means allowing learning to move at a human pace. it's giving your brain time to absorb information instead of demanding INSTANT clarity. hermione never rushes comprehension for the sake of speed she actually lets ideas linger; she revisits them and allows connections to form naturally.
✒︎ honor mental limits instead of overriding them
✒︎ give your brain room to breathe
✒︎ allow yourself to stop before burnout
✧ studying before urgency
studying before urgency is one of hermione's superpowers. she does NOT wait for panic, stress of deadlines, to force her into action, she starts superrr early, steadily and very intentionally. PREPARING is her specialty. she protects her nervous systems, lowers anxiety, and turns studying into a choice. when you study BEFORE urgency, the process feels so much more controlled instead of frantic.
✒︎ start assignments well before they're due
✒︎ review material a little each day instead of in a single marathon session
✒︎ plan study sessions around energy levels NOT deadlines
✒︎ create small, consistent routines to stay ahead
✒︎ try to check understanding early so confusion can be addressed gradually before the deadline
✒︎ prioritize calm preparation over last-minute panic and cramming
✒︎ revisit topics before they feel urgent
✒︎ spread work over time
✧ curiosity over perfectionism
curiosity over perfectionism is legit at the heart of how hermione approaches learning. she studies because she wants to understand, not because she's trying to prove herself or avoid failure. mistakes, confusion and questions are NOT threats. they're signals that her mind is engaging, exploring, and growing. studying feels wayyy less expansive and gentler when it's curiosity. and the process of learning just overall becomes its own reward than a performance to be judges
✒︎ let questions guide your study sessions instead of fear of mistakes
✒︎ reread or revisiting material out of interest
✒︎ focus on understanding over memorizing perfectly (SUPER IMPORTANT)
✒︎ ask questions without shrinking or apologizing
✒︎ celebrate small discoveries and insights, not JUST final results
✒︎ study for enrichment rather than validation
✧ private devotion matters
private devotion matters because some of the most powerful forms of learning happen away from recognition or applause. hermione studies in quiet corners, early mornings, and even late evenings. because she values understanding for its OWN sake. this type of study is intimate and self-directed; it's built on what i love the most in psychology -> intrinsic motivation, rather than external validation. studying becomes more of a personal ritual.
✒︎ study even when no one is watching!!
✒︎ learn for yourself, not just for grades or praise
✒︎ value your own standards instead of comparison
✒︎ create rituals that exist solely for YOU
✒︎ PLEASEEE focus on internal growth instead of external performance
✒︎ develop habits that don't rely on social reinforcement.
✧ structure as kindness
frame your routines and organization not as restrictions, frame it as a way to take care of yourself and your mind. hermione doesn't use structure to punish herself, she creates rhythms and habits that reduce stress, protect her focus, and make learning feel SAFE. consistent schedules, organized notes and very intentional study blocks are tools that allow her curiosity to flourish.
✒︎ set regular study times to reduce mental load
✒︎ organize materials so they're easy to find and revisit
✒︎ use planners, calendars and to-do lists to create mental space
✒︎ create predictable routines that your brain can rely on
✒︎ plan breaks intentionally to protect focus
✒︎ try to structure sessions to alternate between learning and reflections
✒︎ prepare notes, resources and tools in advance
✒︎ spacing repetition over time instead of cramming
✒︎ give yourself permission to follow a plan flexibly
the mindset comes first, because habits, notes, and rituals only work when they're built on intention and self-trust. the next part of this series will focus more on HOW hermione studies that bring her mindset (in this post) to life. love you all and wish you a very gentle semester prepping!

2025 Review
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Books
I really, truely, finally got back into reading this year, the way i loved reading when i was a preteen. I went from maybe reading one book a year, to spending hours a day reading - it’s now my primary hobby.
I’d finished reading THG:ballad of songbirds and snakes at the end of 2024 when someone at the bookstore recommended me The Picture of Dorian Grey. It took me a while, but I LOVED TPODG. Afterwards, I read Eggshell Skull. It wasn’t until July that I started demolishing books. Black Beauty in a week was impressive at the time, then Wuthering Heights in a week. Frankenstein in 4 days, all immediately following one another. Soon, a week without finishing a book became a “reading slump” to me. most of the books you see here were between july and december, so more like 6 months worth of reading than 12.
While I started with classics, I let myself have some fun with Twilight, enjoying something a bit easier to read. I’m still hoping I can finish Alchemised by new year, I’m getting through at least 50, often 100 pages a day. I think getting back into reading like this is my biggest achievement this year, as it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and something many people also want to do.
I don’t have a particular list of books I want to read in 2026, only that I want to finish what’s on my bookshelf before I buy anything new, with a few exceptions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Life
I left the country for the first time this year - or technically last year. I spent new years in Tokyo. I’m desperate to go back to HK/japan ever since. I’ve decided this time next year, I will be in HK, or potentially on a cruise ship.
I did poorly saving this year, though noticing that motivated me to make a change. Since November, I’ve been working more and spending less frivolously, relearning to deny myself some “sweet treats” (if they cost money. I always have some emergency treats at home). In 2026 I want to save up lots, especially if I want to travel again by the end of the year!
I (sort of) ate a lot healthier this year. Trying to manage my iron levels, and before I became pollo-pescatarian, I hadn’t eaten any deep-fried fast food or two minute noodles in months. I’m still trying to manage these things, although when i limited my options for protein so much, i find myself coming back to deep-fried fish or chicken more often - still rarely fast food though. I hope in 2026 I can discover lots of new recipes that are healthy, easy and without guilt for the industries involved in the ingredient list!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Study/Management
I took it slow studying this year, dropping the amount of classes I’m doing so i can focus more on the content. I don’t want to feel as though my electives are slipping away from me. Studying Animal law and Terrorism law changed so much about myself. I adopted pollo-pescatarianism after forcing myself to be exposed to the (legal) treatment of animals in slaughterhouses and farms, and Terrorism law taught me so so much valuable information about extremism, helping me understand what’s happening and what’s changing in the world around me. I’m so glad i decided to take it slow with these classes, because for once, this information will stick with me forever. I don’t care that it may not look good on my academic statement, and it may not look good that I take an extra year to finish law school, it’s worth it for myself. 2026, I want to keep savouring every class, and getting as much out of every week as possible!
I got into weekly planning/journaling this year, and I’m so glad. This will stick with me hopefully for the rest of my life, because it’s so incredibly useful. I struggled with a lot of health problems this year, and even just writing down what symptoms I experienced on what days, when i went to the doctor etc has helped so much. It also helped me keep track of my reading! I would have no idea which books were this year and which were last if not for writing it down!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally, some of my favourite photos I took in Infinity Nikki this year <3
Frankenstein (2025) is like if you got everything from the book and did it literally exactly the opposite. for one stark example (among many others):
BOOK: “No human being could have passed a happier childhood than myself. My parents were possessed by the very spirit of kindness and indulgence. We felt that they were not the tyrants to rule our lot according to their caprice, but the agents and creators of all the many delights which we enjoyed. When I mingled with other families I distinctly discerned how peculiarly fortunate my lot was, and gratitude assisted the development of filial love.”
MOVIE: my dad hits me and my mum and they fight all the time and he hates me and my dad killed my mum
HOWEVER!!! i can appreciate the movie as a separate and new thing. it’s good. it feels like it maintains a lot of the themes of the book but through a very different set of events, maybe trying to enhance the themes with visual media? idk.

accepting that you’re objectively weird & owning it is infinitely better than being constantly desperate to appear normal to people who don’t even matter to you
