I just completed a course and gained a small qualification after years of not being well enough to go into education. I’m really happy but it’s also devastating because the only reason I was able to do it was because remote learning became available during the pandemic. I was offered a place on last the course in 2019 but I had to turn it down because attending for hours at a time was mandatory and it just wasn’t possible with my health conditions, appointments etc. and like previous courses - I would have needed extra help and support that I would unlikely have gotten and probably would have had to drop out due to lack of accessibility. There were no suitable remote learning or job oppertunitys for me in the last seven years but suddenly accessible remote learning and working came into place so quickly and easily and I don’t care if this sounds childish but it’s not fair. When disabled people ask to work from home we were told it was impossible but when it affected the health general population things were put in place immediately. Disabled people saw the jobs and course places that they lost out on suddenly become accessible- after being told working and learning remotely just wasn’t possible but now we’ve seen the truth. It hurts to know I wouldn’t have been able to do this course that I excelled at because of lack of accessibility and I really hope remote learning and working is something that stays in place after covid because we deserve these opportunities. Us disabled people can be great at what we do if opportunities were made accessible to us.
