Power Through the Holiday Season with Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
by Teyuna Darris The holiday season is in full swing. Lights go up, desserts come out, and children and teens start counting down to winter break while adults plan dinners, decorations, and travel. Here in Ferguson—and around the world—families will celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the Winter Solstice, and other annual festivals of light and hope. These holidays help us connect, but they…

"My Praise Song for the Day"
by Teyuna Trynea Darris Once upon a time, not long ago, I was born on December 21st to my parents. My first name is Teyuna (not to be confused with the popular name “Tiana” and its variant spellings). My name is Colombian, derived from “La Ciudad Perdida de Teyuna,” and it means “Mother Earth.” My middle name is Trynea, a creative play by my parents on my elder sister’s name, Renée, which is…

Moreover, at the request of Ms. Lady J Huston, we acknowledge the passing of Mr. Gus Thornton on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024.) I'm trying to become a better teacher
Here's a new (and "old") article I wrote about my desire to become a better teacher and how I want to help others new teachers and substittue teachers to become proficient at what they do.
by Teyuna Darris, PhD Stock image from Pixabay NOTE TO THE READER: I started writing this article at the start of the 2022–2023 academic year, but I finished writing it on July 1st, 2024. Perhaps the difference in tone when you get to the 705th word of this article will suggest a difference in the time in which the two sections of this article was written. Anyway…enjoy! Then The 2022–2023…

"A Nation's Strength" by William Ralph Emerson
What makes a nation's pillars high And its foundations strong? What makes it mighty to defy The foes that round it throng?
It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand Go down in battle shock; Its shafts are laid on sinking sand, Not on abiding rock.
Is it the sword? Ask the red dust Of empires passed away; The blood has turned their stones to rust, Their glory to decay.
And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown Has seemed to nations sweet; But God has struck its luster down In ashes at his feet.
Not gold but only men can make A people great and strong; Men who for truth and honor's sake Stand fast and suffer long.
Brave men who work while others sleep, Who dare while others fly… They build a nation's pillars deep And lift them to the sky.

So...I missed the opportunity to post about all the great things my class was going to do to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth in #February. But, technically, it's not too late to post because I literally teach and celebrate it each day. Here's a snapshot of what was going in my class during Black History Month. Special thanks to all the donors and #DonorsChoose for making this possible. We were given over $2400 worth #books! And, my Scholars are very grateful and enthusiastic about this. And, each week they check out new books and discuss the ones they finished reading with each other. Here's to my #fourthgrade life. #tdarris is #msdarris (at Fort Washington, Maryland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CauVLCmrswp/?utm_medium=tumblr

"You split the sea So I could #walk right through it My #fears are drowned in perfect #love You rescued me So I could stand and say I am a child of #God" - #lyrics from "No Longer Slaves" by #bethelmusic Just a few of my #favoritesongs #tdarris is #msdarris #music (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/tdarris/p/CZBCFWhM2aj/?utm_medium=tumblr
How much grit do you think you’ve got? Can you quit a thing that you like a lot? You may talk of pluck; it’s an easy word, And where’er you go it is often heard; But can you tell to a jot or guess Just how much #courage you now possess? You may stand to trouble and keep your grin, But have you tackled #selfdiscipline? Have you ever issued commands to you To quit the things that you like to do, And then, when tempted and sorely swayed, Those rigid orders have you obeyed? Don’t boast of your grit till you’ve tried it out, Nor prate to men of your courage stout, For it’s easy enough to retain a grin In the face of a fight there’s a chance to #win, But the sort of grit that is good to own Is the stuff you need when you’re all alone. How much grit do you think you’ve got? Can you turn from joys that you like a lot? Have you ever tested yourself to know How far with yourself your will can go? If you want to know if you have grit, Just pick out a joy that you like, and quit. It’s bully sport and it’s open fight; It will keep you busy both day and night; For the toughest kind of a game you’ll find Is to make your body obey your mind. And you never will know what is meant by grit Unless there’s something you’ve tried to quit. This poem is in the #publicdomain https://www.instagram.com/p/CYQVkRVOr4H/?utm_medium=tumblr
This evening, while shopping, I saw this journal, and the message on its cover sparked many thoughts in my mind. These questions surrounding "Finding yourself" and "Who am I?", I assume, are questions that most people have pondered as they try to make sense of, and navigate, this world. A few years back, I was at a writers' conference during which my colleagues, and I, were asked "Who got a hold of you and told you not to be yourself?" That was one of those life-changing moments that I will never forget: Be who you are. #tdarris is #msdarris (at Ferguson, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNEYMjrMDAN/?igshid=orv6x7od1vzk
One of the things I decided to do during #SpringBreak was to re-read my favorite book, "The Phantom Tollbooth" by Norton Juster. This book #inspired me to follow my #dreams, and it helped me to appreciate the little things in my life and do my best with everything. I think you might agree that it can be easier said than done. The story opens, saying, 👉👉👉"There once was a boy named Milo who didn't know what to do with himself, not just sometimes, but always" (pg. 3). 👈👈👈 The story closes, saying, 👉👉👉"And, in the very room in which he sat, there were books that could take you anywhere, and things to invent, and make, and build, and break, and all the puzzle and excitement of everything he didn't know—music to play, songs to sing, and worlds to imagine and then someday make real. His thoughts darted eagerly about as everything looked new—and worth trying.👈👈👈 Now, here are the closing lines: 💥"Well, I would like to make another trip," he said, jumping to his feet; "but I really don't know when I'll have the time. There's just so much to do right here (pg. 154)." 💥 Sometimes, we have to finish the work in front of us before we go on to the next task. #HappyWednesday #tdarris is #msdarris (at Ferguson, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMzVYYlsXqb/?igshid=45fdbwfd91hy
This morning, in the Starbucks drive-thru, a customer behind me yelled at me, "Hey! Move up!" a few times. However, I was only able to move up about a foot, or so. When I arrived at the window, I had my money in hand to pay for my drink (hot chocolate😁🍫, never coffee), and, then to #payitforward as I normally do. Well, before I could pay the money, the clerk and the barista said, "Your hot chocolate is on us because you should not have been screamed at by the customer behind you when we all knew there wasn't enough space between the cars for you to move". ❤They are very kind.❤ Their kindness blindsided me from paying it forward, today. I wanted to at least pay for my drink, but they would not let me. Their kindness did something good to my heart🥰. Someone I love once taught me that 👉👉 to accept the gift honors the giver.👈👈 So, I accepted it because I wanted to show them honor. Thank you, ladies🥰! #HappyMonday #Starbucks (at Starbucks) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMuXOcisC9H/?igshid=1e9sbezo0595p
