Making the perfect study plan
Exams are getting closer and now is the perfect time to create a solid study plan to get motivated and be productive. Here are some tips to help you making your study plan!
You donât need a fancy planner. You can just use Excel to create it as you like and it will be more than enough!
Make a list of all the topics you have to study and gather similar subjects in the same category. Then, classify them by priority order.
Estimate the amount of time youâll need to study each topic. Donât underestimate it : you have to take all the time you need to understand and memorize, otherwise youâll end up rushing things up and not being productive enough. I remember adding 1 hour more than I thought I would need so I could have plenty of time to go deeper in the subject without stressing myself out.
Know when youâre the most effective and do the hardest tasks in that moment. Keep the lighter subjects for the rest of the day. When I was doing my first med school year I would always study chemistry and physics in the mornings and the rest in the afternoon and evening !
Plan your breaks and meals. If you want to watch an episode from your favorite TV show, plan it. Your free time is important too! Make to create time for daily activities that fulfill you :)
Plan your delay! Set a day in your planner where you just catch up on everything youâre late on so you donât get super stressed if your study day didnât go as planned ! I always use my Sundays as « delay days » haha
If you have enough time, try to plan review sessions of the topics youâve already seen. When I was studying anatomy I would make review sessions one day a week so I could memorize in the best way possible.
Also, plan a day or half a day to test yourself. Do it early enough to re-adjust your study plan if you feel like you have to spend more time reviewing a certain topic!
And you, what are your âplanning habitsâ? Do you use a planner ?
Please reblog and like this post if you want more tips like this one!
A Harm Reduction Guide to Safer Drug Use
drugsand.me is an educational website that teaches about the existing harm reduction methods for drug users. We do not promote drug use, but we do encourage you to be safe if you are thinking of taking any kind of drug. This website was inspired by the thousands of deaths that occur in the UK due to the lack of correct drug education.
An example of the siteâs interactive feature, allowing users to investigate the risks when mixing different drugs:
All the information on the site is sourced from peer-reviewed academic publications, the advice they offer - on cocaine, MDMA, alcohol, cannabis, and now ketamine and LSD - is certainly a cut above the anecdotal information you may receive from peers.Â
Have a look around: Drugsand.meÂ
okay this is a good idea but like. you literally never have any reason to believe your dealer is giving you exactly what they say, with no additives and lacing, so like. this site is useless unless you actively test everything you purchase. like this is a good idea but it doesnt actually help as long as dealers are scumbags which they always will be
Hey Ashley, thatâs a great observation that Drugsand.me has tried to tackle by guiding users to legit drug test kits. You can purchase drug testing kits here:
https://www.reagent-tests.uk/shop/Â
Reagent testing is an excellent way to massively reduce the risks of using drugs. With the ability to instantly see if what you have bought is fake or even dangerous itâs much easier to make good decisions about safe drug use.
Using just a scraping of a pill or a few crumbs of powder and a drop of reagent you can instantly see if you have been sold PMA, MDPV or other more dangerous drugs instead of what you were expecting.
Hereâs the colour chart for their drug testing kits. They cover quite a few substances:
DEAR RESEARCHERS OF TUMBLR
You know whatâs awesome? Research. You know whatâs not awesome? Not being able to get access to research because itâs stuck behind a paywall and you donât belong to an institution/your institution doesnât subscribe to that particular journal.
FEAR NOT.
Here is a list of free, open access materials on a variety of subjects. Feel free to add if you like!
GO FORTH AND LEARN SHIT, MY FRIENDS.
Directory of Open Access Journals- A compendium of over 9000 journals from 133 countries, multilingual and multidisciplinary.
Directory of Open Access Books- Like the above, but for ebooks. Also multidisciplinary.
Ubiquity Press- Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more. Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.
Europeana-Â Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.
Digital Public Library of America- American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.
Internet Archive- In addition to books, they have music and videos, too. Free! And legal! They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.
College and Research Libraries- Library science and information studies. Because thatâs what I do.
Library of Congress Digital Collections- American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.
LSE Digital Library- London history, womenâs history.
Wiley Open Access- Science things! Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.
SpringerOpen-Â Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.
Elsevier Open Access- Elsevierâs kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this. Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.
Work Smarter, Not Harder: study tips psychology taught me
study in shorter intervals and take breaks (ie, 40 minutes studying and 20 minutes break)
during your break donât watch tv or surf the internet. get outside if you can and go for a walk. or at least listen to some instrumental music and walk around your hall. or meditate or do some art. anything that doesnât require super directed attention. this allows your attention to be replenished. itâs like a muscle and you gotta give it time to rest. tv doesnât allow for that.
relate the information to yourself and your life. creating visual images will improve your memory.
when studying, take notes by hand and put them in your own words. generating material yourself will encode the material better in your brain, and youâll remember it better
donât just reread, rehearse! quiz yourself on the materials. if you use a visual image âmemory palaceâ technique, walk yourself through it. youâre likely to remember information youâve tested yourself on better.
organizing information into groups that make sense create more connections in your brain and allow you to remember things better. the more meaningful connections you make, the better.
make sure the last thing you do before bed is study. no phone, no netflix. your brain will process what youâve just done while you sleep and this improve recall.
(feel free to add any!)

Looking at something truly gross
People, usually: Eww, what the fuck is that *looks away*
Med students: Eww, what fuck is that *looks closer*
little self care tips
- apply Vaseline to your eyes, lashes, brows, and lips before bed
- never brush curly hair while itâs dry
- on that note, applying products/oil to curly hair while dry is useless
- use a t shirt to dry hair to avoid frizz
- sleep without pants. trust me.
- avoid watery body lotions like Vaselineâs lotion. only dries you out
- avoid crystalline, jagged scrubs (sugar, coffee. St. Ives, etc.). Use round/gentle ones like oatmeal
- avoid coconut oil on face. if you apply it to your hair wash your face afterwards
- donât put lemon on your face. it might seem like itâs helping but it weakens its protective layer in the long run. if you do use it, dilute it and avoid sun for a while.
- no toothpaste on pimples either itâs a myth
- why do u have a bra on at home. take that shit off and live a little.
- apply deodorant before getting dressed so it doesnât rub off on your clothes defeating the purpose
- reapply sunscreen every 3-4 hours
- donât text the fuckboy he donât care about you
- wake up 30 minutes earlier to have a more relaxed morning and avoid rushing
- wash panties by themselves so you donât get the gross dirt and germs from your other clothes mixed in. dry them in the sun to kill bacteria if possible.
- hand wash all hijabs theyâll last longer
- donât use rose water with added fragrance. always check label
- eat at least one fruit or vegetable a day
- leave menial tasks for the end of the day. donât drain yourself before getting to the important stuff
- before saying something mean or a nasty joke, take 5 seconds to think about it.
- apologizing first doesnât make you weak
- being vulnerable doesnât make you weak
- exfoliate after using foundation or powder
- clean phone screen with rubbing alcohol/sanitizer
might add more later or y'all can reblog with your own tips
I dont agree with some but still, good tips!
Why Medical School Is Important
This week, I learned a lesson about why medical school is so important. For 4 years, we cram everything into our heads, a little about every specialty. In the end, we all just canât wait to specialize in our own fields and not have to remember the majority of other stuff we memorized. We can always just consult someone else if we need help right? Well⊠What if you didnât recognize the underlying problem in the first place?
This week on neurology, we had a 27 year old woman who was admitted overnight for severe headache. They ended up doing a brain MRI, which showed several small diffusion weighted defects in the posterior brain consistent with strokes. We were asked to see her in the morning for evaluation of âstrokesâ. I was asked to read her chart and go see her. I thought it was a little odd that a healthy 27 year old had strokes, but you never know. I start reading up and see that her systolic blood pressure has been above 160 all night. They were allowing some degree of permissive hypertension for her strokes. Her creatinine was 1.4. They also assumed this was because of her elevated blood pressures. Finally, there was protein in her urine. I keep reading and notice she is 4 days postpartum. I havenât even seen the patient yet and put the pieces together in my head. Elevated blood pressure, severe headache with visual scotomas, elevated creatinine, protein in the urine, postpartum⊠Holy shit, this person has preeclampsia with severe features and needs to be started on a magnesium drip immediately!
I want to go into Ob/Gyn, so naturally I was a little excited that I recognized this. I immediately went to my 70 year old attending and told him this. He looked surprised, and I could tell he probably hadnât thought about this disease in decades since usually they are admitted to ob/gyn and not neurology. He asked me to call the ob/gyn that was on. Within a few hours, she was seen and started on a magnesium drip for preeclampsia with severe features. My attending and I went to radiology and had them re-read the scan. She had PRES not strokes. This woman could have gone home on aspirin, an anti-hypertensive, and a statin with neurology follow-up and had a seizure a day later from full blown eclampsia.
In the end, I learned about how one person going down the rabbit hole of one diagnosis can lead to a series of several providers going down it as well. It was a shining moment for me as a medical student, not going to lie. But it also showed me the importance of being well read and not shutting out my mind to other specialties. We all need to know a little about everything and when to realize our limits and consult someone else. And a lot of the time, medical school is the only immersive experience we will get in many of these specialties. It matters more than just learning for the sake of the shelves.

self discipline tips
here are tips I discovered very recently:
something is better than nothing. 5 minutes of work are better than zero. Just because you missed something on your schedule doesnât mean you canât still work on it, even for 5 minutes. Grow and build on this.
second drafts / reviews can be done after.
Donât think you are going to do your very best work on the first try. Take the weight of perfectionism off your shoulders.
donât think about doing it. just do it as fast as you can.
build on your productivity, not your failures.
If you come from a past of procrastinating and now feel motivated to change and discipline yourself, do NOT try to do everything at once.
if you have a set of different goals to accomplish, begin with the most important one. Wait until the rotine of working for that one settles in (you feel productive and comfortable-ish), and then begin with the next. Repeat.
this way youâll be building your way up and not juggling everything at the same time, hoping everything works out.
be patient with yourself, youâll get there!
set smaller deadlines for your goals
have monthly and weekly-ish deadlines
e.g. if you are doing a project, due 22nd Feb, set personal deadlines, like have Introduction written by 2nd Feb, have Methods written by 10th Feb, have project complete by 18th Feb.
take them as seriously as you possibly can, donât miss out on yourself.
write realistic daily tasks and donât stop until you finish them. after them you can do whatever you want
on writing realistic daily tasks, the secret is knowing you can only do so much in one day, but trusting you can accomplish everything in the course of any period of time (a week, or 2 weeks or a month, etc.) because you will combine the work from all these different days.
itâs very tempting to write down all the tasks you need to accomplish in one day to just get over with it, but the real deal is you wonât accomplish half of them. Youâll feel very unproductive then, wich leads to demotivation.
spread daily tasks in the time necessary.
have a consistent sleep schedule.
if your mind isnât ready everything will fall apart.
have one rest day per week where you plan nothing, do whatever you want except studying. this can be harder than you expect!
(donât forget these are effective only if you actually put them into practice! good luck babes!!)
Hey! Iâve gathered a few resources for various subjects so Iâd taught Iâd share them in one masterpost! Iâll keep adding more resources as I gather more, so donât worry if a subject you study is left out and feel free to add any resources you may find!

Itâs not much but I hope this was of some help to you! 2017 has just begun and while our studies are important please please please donât forget to take good care of yourself!Â
ATTENTION STUDYBLRS
Donât worry about grades.
Donât worry about that one bad assignment or that badly-marked paper.
Donât worry about that presentation you had to do while stuttering with a shaky voice and clammy hands.
Donât worry about what your peers think or view you as. That is not important, and I promise you they do not see what you think of yourself as. That little mistake you made during your presentation that you keep thinking about? Others forget about it minutes later.
Donât feel guilty about having one day to yourself, for taking breaks. (Just donât make a habit out of it and let it extend for over one day at a time.)
Donât worry when you mistakenly prioritize. Step back, take a deep breath, and re-evaluate your priorities.
Donât worry and stress about what you want to do in life, and what you want to pursue. Stressing about that wonât get you anywhere, just to a place filled with more stress and perhaps even regrets. Continue exploring and prevailing.
Donât worry about failure. Life has a funny way of working things out.
Keep doing you â failures and grades do NOT define you.
