"That's kind of you to say" —I think, he ponders, but doesn't voice that part. He does level the stranger with a slightly incredulous look, more curious than anything else, as if he's assessing her. "Many souls are rather pessimistic with our odds, so it's appreciated."
Rook lets out the softest of chuckles after, confidence carried in his shoulders in a way one might expect from someone such as him. "Though kid might not fit as a moniker," excluding Varric, "I feel like I could have at least two decades on you— unless you age incredibly gracefully."

"Bellara," Rook spoke, voice aching with something he didn't realize was there as he bears witness to her pain and vulnerability. She had already fought against so much loss, they all have— so her fear is incredibly understandable. And yet, despite that, he finds himself in awe of it. She was much more open about her feelings than he ever could be, and he respected that so, so much.
But she wasn't alone— she didn't have to be, and Rook would ensure that.
He steels himself, brows knitting together just so, as his expression takes on an edge of determination. Wading to her side, he places a hand on her shoulder, offering her a small reassuring smile. "You'll never be alone, not if I can help it. I promise. The others and I— we're all here with you."
adaari hcs ( since i am considering making my rook an adaari, of a sort );
i do not believe rook would be a typical adaari, but this is solely due to his specialization in lightning magic. and taking some inspiration with how atla blends both fire and lightning, i think it would be something similar for him! i thought this might be a fun approach, so im working fast and loose with the limited lore we have surrounding adaari.
so, as rook's adaari traits settled in, his family took a militaristic approach, while also knowing he needed to learn how to control his fire ( thus the beginning of their outreach to qun teachings ). his fire came before his magic, but as soon as his magic developed, his fire became lightning, which was terrifying for him and his family.
so simply picture the same raw lightning that spews forth from lightning aspected dragons in the games; that is how it looks for rook! purple eyes, purple mouth, pouring forth light and raw energy. hair standing on end, crackling lightning in and around the mouth, etc. his lightning burns much hotter than his fire with the intensity of it. though his adaari trait manifests as lightning by instinct, he can make it fire, but prefers not to, as lightning magic has always been a part of him.
given the intensity that is his lightning, whenever he uses it, he has a tendency to char the shit out of his mouth both inside and at the corners, gaining lichtenberg figures; those lightning-esque trails / scars across his flesh ( though they eventually fade, since it's primarily residual magic ).
other than these traits, he doesn't really outwardly acknowledge he is, technically, adaari. even when taash reveals it for themselves, rook doesn't go "same!" or anything. he mostly just attributes his own adaari nature to his magic, rather than birth, especially since adaari wouldn't be a proper label. he'd rather use the 'lightning breather' equivalent. the closest translation i can think of would be asaarandi; the singular abbreviation for thunderstorm in qunlat.

what harm was there in being a bit honest about those things?
❛ hm. would probably retain some of the ‘benefit of the doubt’ i have given others , maybe spoken up sooner on some. ❜ dark shades move towards the other , the corner of her lips perking upward then. ❛ finish a story to start another , learn how to correct my mistakes for them to be. . . completed with better means for the end. but that is just me being vague , isnt it? ❜ she leans forward to set her cup down , soon to lean over the arm over her seat in a lazed position.

Upfront and forthcoming. Rook supposed he should've expected as much— Neve has always been pragmatic. Still, to glance beyond the curtain, to witness the inklings of internal struggle within the bulwark— he was rather mystified.
"We've all craved to alter the decisions made in the past," he comes to lean against the side of her desk, turning his body just-so to properly look at her, coffee in hand. "But..." For a brief moment, he trails, glancing away from Neve to look somewhat solemnly down into his cup, as if lost in thought.
I cannot afford regret, he wants to say— but that may open a door to far more vulnerability than he's accustomed to. "I think if I went back to change anything, I wouldn't be where I am now." Rook settles, returning his gaze to rest upon Neve, the smallest of content smiles curling in his lip.
It takes him a moment to realize what he might have just implied, and he immediately rips his gaze away once more with an awkward clearing of the throat. And yet he can't find it in him to dismiss the accidental implication, so he leaves it to silence, and to her interpretation.
"I do hope both our stories become ones we're proud of. There's a lot riding on us."

Neve's response rang curiously in Rook's head— he had yet to witness her give even a hint toward her insecurities— and here she was, cracking her own veneer. He wasn't even sure that she had meant to. Whatever the case, something felt special about this, like he had seen something he shouldn't have.
"That's a comfort to know," he begins, sipping idly at one of the cups of coffee he had brought for them to share ( he certainly didn't use 'trying Lucanis' recipe together' as an excuse ). Rook gave her a rather quizzical look, before continuing. "What would you change, then? To get your better story."

it is but his voice that pulls her from the gentle thumping , causing umber shades to open , the pull of sleep drifting away as head adjusts to look up towards his visage from the way she laid upon his chest. the slightest tilt given , grey sprinkled dark locks shifting with the movement over the bare of his skin , she observes yet remains silent for but the moment.
she wasn't always the best with her words when it came to these sorts of things , opting to rely on actualities and truths. it was simply ingrained into her. so , why did no words come from her lips? the mage knew she would not leave this spot upon his chest. but her mind did that thing it always does ; it riddled within her with some doubt and guilt. had she made it seem she may wander off in the deep of night? to scurry away from him? from this? that hadnt been her intention , even if at times it may seem she kept some aspects of their being at arms length , some words she couldnt bring herself to voice.
in her casual manner does a soft mmh come from the mage who lifts her head , simply to brings tiers down and kiss the spot upon his pec she had claimed for herself that night. she remained like that as words are spoken , dosed with drowsiness from earlier activities and all the burden of the world that felt to rest upon her ( and his ) shoulders. ❛ now where else would i go , Trouble? ❜ is muffled against flesh , another kiss given before she is back to laying on him with eyes closed , practically snuggling into his warmth as close as she could.

COMPANION VERSE;
he simply goes by mercar. ( if recruited by a shadow dragons rook, this is subject to change. he'd just use his first name kaaras in this situation )
in this verse, mercar's personality is rather altered, especially with the way he carries himself. he's not a leader in this case, and he's instead much more involved with information gathering and being a dealer of mysteries. think like ... oracle vibes.
since every companion fills a valuable slot, mercar would be useful as an information broker, similar to neve in a way. another option ( either in tandem or separate ) is his magic specialization that can be utilized for weather patterns and the balancing of energy ( kind of a mouthful, but this can translate in a handful of ways, such as assisting in hunting and tracking ).
his previous connection to varric could act as plausible cause to seek him out, especially in relation to the shadow dragons ( if recruited by a shadow dragons rook, this situation would be simplified to him being a shadow broker with the organization instead ). could also possibly be the hinted at 'informant' of neve's location.
his personal quarters would be in the 'music room' the moment it unlocks, i think. perhaps his recruitment criteria depends on the unlocking of it, given the whole mystery flair surrounding him / the shadow dragons and information broking.
since neve is shadow dragons adjacent, but not actually a shadow dragon, mercar would act as an actual representative of the organization.
mechanically as a companion he would be a mage, but would fill a more 'warrior'-esque slot due to his combat style, just magic flavor.
the gift that can be given to him is a stray cat, found in the cat cafe in minrathous.
no big ideas with his personal quest, but the overall theme would likely encompass solving a mystery. not like neve's, i should note. think more freaky psychological mystery stuff, almost akin to cosmic horror?
if left to his own devices ( and if those involved are left unromanced ), he does attempt to pursue neve. since i wish they had added poly romance to the game, i'll also add that if lucanis is also left unromanced, mercar would definitely try to pursue a throuple thing with them. the fate of either option ultimately decided upon by choices made by rook.
