Connecting With Your Spirit Guides ❁ཻུ۪۪ ━
‧₊˚. : · •. * • ˚ . · * ✶ : · • * ˚ ✵
In this discussion, we will explore various methods for establishing a connection with your spirit guides. It's important to note that this is not a definitive guide dictating what you should or shouldn't do, but rather a collection of different approaches that can help you discover what works best for you.
However, I will say this, and it's nothing bad. When establishing a connection with your spirit guides or receiving their signs, it's important to release the belief that it will be an extraordinary encounter where they manifest in front of you with physical forms, complete with wings or even a motorbike. By letting go of expectations regarding their appearance, status, and more, you can better open yourself up to recognizing the subtle signs that you might otherwise miss if you cling to such unrealistic expectations.
𖤣𖥧˚ Set Your Intention
Start by clarifying your intention to connect with your spirit guides. Clearly state your desire to establish a connection and seek their guidance and support.
𖤣𖥧˚ Ask For a Sign
If you're seeking guidance on a specific issue, ask your spirit guides for a clear sign to confirm their presence or provide direction. Be open to receiving the sign in unexpected ways, such as through conversations, songs, or encounters with specific animals or numbers.
𖤣𖥧˚ Pay Attention to Signs and Synchronicities
This goes back to the second part of this list. Throughout your day, be mindful of any signs, symbols, or synchronicities that catch your attention. Spirit guides often communicate through subtle messages in the form of numbers, animals, repeated patterns, or meaningful coincidences. My spirit guides would catch my attention by using feathers and placing them in unordinary spots.
𖤣𖥧˚ Practice Active Listening
Be patient and receptive during your connection attempts. Practice active listening by quieting your mind and being open to receiving messages or guidance from your guides. Pay attention to any thoughts, ideas, or insights that arise.
𖤣𖥧˚ Create a Sacred Space
Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can relax and focus without distractions. This can be a corner in your room, a meditation area, or anywhere you feel at ease.
𖤣𖥧˚ Call upon your guides
Silently or verbally call upon your spirit guides. You can address them by name if you already know it or simply ask for their presence and guidance. Be sincere and open-hearted in your communication.
𖤣𖥧˚ Dreamwork
Before sleep, set the intention to connect with your spirit guides in your dreams. Keep a dream journal beside your bed and record any dreams or messages you receive upon waking. Your guides may use dreams as a way to communicate with you.
𖤣𖥧˚ Keep a journal
Maintain a journal or notebook dedicated to your spiritual journey. Write down your experiences, any insights or messages you receive, and any signs or synchronicities you notice. This helps you track your progress and gain clarity over time.
𖤣𖥧˚ Nature connection
Spend time in nature, whether it's going for a walk in the woods, sitting by the ocean, or simply being in your backyard. Nature can provide a serene and harmonious environment to connect with your spirit guides and receive their guidance.
𖤣𖥧˚ Meditation
Meditation can quiet your mind and create a receptive space for communication with your spirit guides. Additionally, listening to music or following a guided meditation centred around connecting with your guides can be beneficial. In my personal opinion, the duration of your meditation session is not as important as the intention behind it. Whether it's a brief 30-minute session or a shorter period, the ultimate aim remains the same: establishing a connection with your guides.

Feeding Spells: DIY and Theory (long text)
[[Unlike my normal stuff that tries to be a lot more general, I'm going to speak primarily just about my spirit-working witchcraft paradigm; this post may not be applicable to you.]]
I believe that all magic takes energy to work. Often, when I assist people with troubleshooting spellwork, the only problem that person is having is that they are either not ever powering their spells, or they are failing to provide the spells with more energy when the batteries have run dry.
Typically, these people are aware that spells need power to go. They just don't have a grasp on how they can do it within their unique belief structure.
Common problems I see:
Imagination/desire is falsely equated to energy work. As in, "I visualize that the spell is filled with power." But no actual movement of energies takes place.
In the way I do energy work, visualization may be conceived of as a hollow vessel or empty skin which will shape and form power that is poured into it - but you've got to pour the power, or else the skin will rapidly wither away.
A charm or action is performed, but it fails to correctly evoke power.
E.g., the practitioner has read that "offerings don't need to be physical, singing, dancing, and devotional acts are powerful offerings," and has taken this to mean that doing their homework with the intent of recharging their spells is sufficient.
The practitioner has bought into the "whatever you want to do will work because your witchcraft is under your control" thing and is basically just having fun with the vibes.
E.g., in the charm, "Sun and Moon watch over you, by the Stars you're Cleansed," the practitioner may certainly be evoking power, but the power is not a revitalizing one; it is a cleansing or purifying one.
A practitioner defending their choices to use this charm may say that it makes their space feel lovely, or vibrate with power, and that - just like putting an object under the full moon to charge it - their enchanted objects are naturally just supposed to soak up this power.
Which they may well be doing - to become cleansed. Not necessarily to become saturated with the vital power required to function magically.
Below are things about charging which may assist you if you think you struggle with properly feeding your spellwork after it has been cast.
Feeding or charging?
Same thing. I find the imagery inspired by feeding to be closer to the magical reality of the operation: the spell must consume. It must take in energy, chew it up, swallow it, and digest it.
It will likely work more weakly when it is hungry, and - just like an electronic device shutting itself off at 2% to save your user data - when it becomes too starved for power, it will cease to function until you feed it again.
What to feed?
In all cases, unless you are a trained energy worker, avoid only imagining or believing that any magical object has regained a charge.
Generally, you will want to sacrifice a physical substance (food, specially prepared feeding substances).
What you do with remnants of an offering after it has been given is up to you.
Exactly what you feed your magic with does matter - but for general purposes, almost anything will do. Your own intuition and spirits will advise on the details if special circumstances arise.
Generally speaking, we might say that if a spell is constructed with certain powers, it is best to mimic those powers in charging. If you cast a candle spell, candles may be best to charge it; if your spell is one of special waters, then mixing in empowered water may be your best choice, and so forth.
When in doubt, share some of your meal, if you can spare it.
When to feed?
For spells that are expected to function on an ongoing basis, but currently aren't carrying a heavy load (e.g., a happy job spell while your job environment is already basically fine and there are no big issues to deal with), try feeding once a month. The full moon makes a good reminder.
For spells that are carrying a heavy load (e.g., a happy job spell but they just promoted the Worst Woman Ever to supervisor), feed weekly - or more often.
For spells that are on bed rest, in hibernation, or are active but rarely used, quarterly (on equinoxes or solstices) may more than suffice.
It's a good idea to try and develop a sense for whether or not an object is charged or not - this is not a terribly advanced psychic operation. A pendulum board with the numbers 1-10 to gauge a charge level is ideal to bridge the gap.
If a spell stops working, try feeding it. A lack of energy is not the only reason spells fail, but this is a good first step to troubleshooting.
Prepare a Feeding Charm
This charm, in and of itself, does not need to deliver metaphysical power. Rather, you are instructing the magical object to come and feed.
Conceptually, we may imagine that if the spell is a hound dog out chasing rabbits, we are whistling for it to come back to the cabin and eat. Without our instructions, it may not find the food, or may neglect to eat it at all.
This charm may be as simple as "come and eat," spoken with special focus over the object. Or, it may be a hand sign. If you like, you can visualize - perhaps a hungry mouth bursting into appearance atop the object.
A simple Feeding Charm ("come and eat") may be supplemented by whatever special instructions you have in that moment. E.g., "and once you're doing eating, go right away and keep performing your duties." Or, "...then hibernate, and reserve all this energy for yourself; rest and grow strong, and I'll get you next when I need you."
Intuition may advise that for special objects, unique preparation methods must be undertaken. You can't snap your fingers at every kind of magic, after all. But for the kind over which you are lord and master, I recommend keeping your Feeding Charm very easy to carry out.
Combine the Feeding Charm with any sacrifice of digestible energy
Over any object to be fed, perform your Feeding Charm.
Then, provide energy directly to the object. This may take many forms depending on the object:
Incense and candles may be burned nearby; ideally, hold object in heat or smoke
Food may be placed in front of
Special oils or waters may be daubed on
Energy work may be performed to pour in power
Prayers may be performed, requesting that some entity or force directly donate their power to the object
If the offering must be "activated" in any sense (lighting a candle, etc), do so.
In circumstances where a spell still has some energy and is just due for a meal, let the energy "settle" for perhaps fifteen to thirty minutes, or even an hour or so.
Then, perform a closing or sealing charm to end the feeding. Proceed to direct your spell back to its task. ("Now that you've eaten, go back to do your work.")
After this point, dispose of any offering remnants in any method which you prefer.
In the case that a spell has run completely dry and is now a withered husk, more work is required
In fact, it may be easier to just cast a whole new spell, but in case you don't want to:
Experiment with a variety of offerings and energy sources; not just different kinds of food, but food combined with prayers, etc.
Instead of telling your magic to eat and get back to work, use your Feeding Charm to instruct the object to consume as much energy as it needs to grow strong and return to its former strength.
If possible, carry the object with you and allow it to feed off of your personal energy, like a leech.
You may need to place the object in a special container, such as a cauldron or coffin, to represent an embryonic or gestational state of rebirth. While the object is interred within, feed and care for as usual.
There is a maximum amount of metaphysical energy that spells can absorb at once. Like an underweight puppy, one feeding might not do; you may have to carefully feed the charm over multiple days before it begins to wake up again.
Your life may be made easier if you can get a spirit to watch over this process for you.
If strange, hungry creatures appear in your dreams, feed them.
Recharging a spell with no physical vessel
Generally, if you expect to use a spell over and over again in the long term, you should tie it to a physical vessel. This makes maintenance (such as feeding) easier.
However, you may still be able to feed a spell with no physical vessel.
Provide the spell with a clear quartz crystal, or other specially prepared temporary vessel, and call the spell down into it in order for it to feed.
When the feeding is done, seal the feeding dismiss the spell as you normally would.
If the spell can't be "called down" away from its post, take a candle and carve into it the name or mark of your spell, work over the candle until it is metaphysically relevant, and burn it with the instructions that its power goes to your spell.
You may be saying that your spell does not have a name or mark with which to identify it (and no, I do not mean the name of the recipe; I mean the name of the individual spell). If that is the case, in the future, refrain from casting spells with no vessels and no names and sending them out into the world, only to later on realize you need to call it back and mess with it.
If this is, however, the case for you currently, consider the following stopgap solutions:
Use your spell notes as an information taglock ("this power goes to the Red Pepper Spellbreaker cast on [date] for [purpose]")
Create a custom sigil specifically identifying the spell cast prior
Re-create the original spell and consecrate the reconstruction as being the body of the original, then recast it to empower the original
Just pretty much focus on the fact that the energy is going to reach the spell that you cast that one time (it will probably work)
Make your life easier by preparing metaphysically enriched offerings ahead of time
By preparing batch substances with which to feed your magic, you will save frustration and be more easily able to feed your magic when you're too tired to do energy work or full charms.
The lunar oil below is a basic example of how to enchant a feeding substance.
There are many recipes for preparing general-purpose feeding substances. Powders are a common one. Although I've shared an oil below, my favorite formula is based in water - it makes for easier cleanup.
General purpose charging oil for the Lunar Witch
Obtain a small container of palatable oil - perhaps olive oil. Transfer it into a new container if you like.
Emphasis on the small - you will use drops at a time, so even a couple of ounces can last a year.
On the container (using a masking tape foundation and permanent marker, if necessary), draw the planetary seal of the Moon (the one that looks like four bananas), and if you are able to manage it, the lunar planetary square.
On the full moon, and if you must a waxing moon, but never on the waning or dark moons, take this container of oil as near as possible to the moonlight.
Prepare to speak over the oil a hymn. Before or during the recitation, perform a charm or action which indicates the oil should capture, contain, and/or be infused with the energy you will call down.
Consider speaking the hymn to be an act of creating a road or highway to lunar power, through which lunar power spills down.
Perform your Feeding Charm.
Speak over the oil the Orphic hymn to Selene (this, or any preferred translation).
Perform a sealing or completion charm ("So Mote It Be," etc).
The oil is now charged in a basic way. Repeat the hymn every full moon and it can be used as a serviceable feeding oil.
Now that the oil has been prepared in a basic way, the real work may begin.
Put the container of oil in a special and magical place. Petition and request that you may receive special signs for what other ingredients to add to the oil.
Be specific that you seek to make a feeding oil for the purposes of revitalizing any magical object. (You never know what the spirits will try to have you craft if you're not specific).
Attempt your best efforts of omen-reading, dreamwork, and other methods of receiving spirit messages. You may find that you need to pray and petition daily, or engage in other strenuous spirit work. Be prepared to deal with sorcerous, lunar, and other emissaries during this time.
With luck and extended effort (spanning, most likely, weeks or months or longer - this is not a weekend operation), you will receive confirmation of some special ingredient, object, technique, or other thing, to include in this recipe to make it uniquely your own.

It can be used as an offering to deities, spirits, ancestors, etc.(e.g. for Sif I sweeten the coffee with oat milk + honey but for Hel I leave the coffee black for an offering)
Consider the way you stir! Counterclockwise banishes and repels negativity, clockwise invites + brings energy to you.
Stain pages for you journal, spell work, or book of shadows! You can also use a strong brewed coffee and a paint brush to paint sigils onto the pages! .

Spirit Conjuring: A Crash Course
You can read this article on our website here.
Lethe here! Before we begin, I strongly recommend you take a look at these two posts written by Acheron, which delve more deeply into discernment and how to gauge if you are really ready to conjure.
Please note that this guide is designed for spirit workers who already are capable of warding and sensing spirits. If you don’t know how to ward your space, or how to tell if it’s the wind howling or a spirit trying to get your attention, you should not be conjuring.
Before you even get started with any conjuring - have a purpose. In the beginning, it is very helpful to have a clear game-plan of what you want to do. Do you want to learn a new skill? Ask questions to a member of a species you’re very interested about? Consider this and write it down.
Take notes. Write as thorough a document as you are able to - spare no detail on the type of thing you are hoping to accomplish with your conjure. The more you write, the easier the rest of your conjure will be.
Additionally, research some banishing methods (I have included a few helpful links at the end of this post!), and prepare an offering. Please note that the offering you provide should be of equal value to the thing you are asking for. For example, if you are conjuring an entity because you want them to empower a spell, the offering you provide should be of higher value than if you are calling a spirit just to ask about their day.
MATERIALS:
Offering
Banishment spell and ingredients (if you need them)
Wards
Divination method (you can use telepathy if this is your strong suit, but having a divination method is incredibly helpful to confirm your answers and should be used as another method to verify answers during your vetting sessions)
Cleansing spell and ingredients (if you need them)
A quiet place, free of interruptions
Your written document
STEP ONE:
Make sure you have all of your materials ready. If you are going to need to banish something, you don’t want to have to pause your ritual and run to the kitchen for salt. Make sure your divination tools and your space have both been cleansed, and that you will have at least an hour of uninterrupted time.
STEP TWO:
Please, for god’s sake - make sure your space is well-warded.
Example of a bad wards: “Only light spirits with good intentions can come in.”
Why is it a bad ward? A spirit can be light aligned, or have good intentions, and still cause you harm. Consider a light-aligned angel who sees you as “unclean”, enters your wards, and attacks you to cleanse you. According to your wards, this would be acceptable. After all, he is light aligned AND he means well.
Examples of good wards: Wards that prevent spirits from using glamours while inside them, wards that prevent malicious or dangerous parasitic entities from entering, etc. Please make sure that when creating these wards, you are clear about your definitions of ambiguous terms, such as “dangerous” or “harmful”.
STEP THREE:
With your offering in hand, state your intent (this is where having the detailed document really comes in handy!). While being fancy and poetic can really get you in the Conjuring Mood, it’s best to aim for being clear. Saying something along the lines of “I am sending out a calling for ______, I offer ________ in exchange for _______” can be a good place to start.
STEP FOUR:
Wait for the spirit to show up. Once they are with you, confirm that they are not malicious. Make sure that they agree to the terms you specify. Some points you might want to consider including are:
They will only remain in your space for the duration of the conjure, and they will leave your space and have their permission to access it revoked once the conjure is completed
They agree to the transaction you proposed.
They will not lie, either explicitly or by omission, and they will present the information they provide in a way that does not misrepresent facts, lead to misinterpretations, etc.
The conjuring session is initiated once they agree to the terms you have set out, and it is finished when you say the following “____”.
This is a good example of what your interaction might look like.
If they agree to the terms, then proceed with the conjure. If they do not agree with them, ask them to leave and try again. If they refuse to leave, proceed to banish, cleanse, and put new wards in place.
STEP FIVE:
Begin the interaction with the spirit. While I encourage you to be polite and respectful, avoid language that might place you in a position of “debt” with the strange spirit (no “sorry”, “thank you”, etc.).
Listen to them, but also be on the lookout for anything that feels “off”. If you get a bad feeling- trust your gut. If you catch them in a lie, if their story doesn’t add up, if they are trying to convince you to sell your soul for riches - ask them to leave. If they do not respect your wishes, then banish them.
Some things you should look out for when interacting with a spirit are:
Claims about them being “totally your guide”, or “have been protecting you since you were a child, because your future is so special.”
“I am your long lost ____, and in your past life we were soulbound, I swear.”
“Only with my help will you be able to unlock your truest potential.”
While they might be sincere, it is important to keep a healthy level of cynicism in your interactions with a spirit. After all, they are a stranger, and while you might have met your soulmate during a random call into the astral, it is also very likely you just met an asshole. Just… make sure to keep that in mind.
STEP SIX:
Once you are done with the conjure, ask the spirit to leave. If things have been going well, you can schedule another meeting with them. Make sure they leave after you ask them to. If they don’t, then BANISH them. This may seem like an extreme measure, but they should respect your wishes. If they don’t, it’s unlikely they will for other things, too. Either way, once the spirit is gone from your space, make sure to dispose of your offering, cleanse your space, and thoroughly check your wards to see if they need any work.
STEP SEVEN:
Enjoy.

Is it a deity reaching out to you, or is it just animals following their natural cycles for the current time of year? Is it a deity reaching out, or is it social media algorithm curating your feed based on your recent interactions and searches? Is it a deity reaching out, or are you the one interested in the deity?
The algorithms! Someone had to say it. Is it a message from a deity, or from Meta/Google/Microsoft/whoever?
I’ve definitely seen people interpret the actions of the social media algorithms as some kind of synchronicity or “message from the universe” or something much worse and more frightening. I can kind of understand it because we’re just not used to interacting with algorithms that do that. They weren’t a thing for most people growing up, and it takes time to get used to.
I’m a transhumanist for the most part, but these corporate algorithms? I don’t like them. I don’t have to support every asinine, dangerous, or psychologically unhealthy use of technology just because I’m generally pro-tech. I don’t like how AI is currently developing and being used. Especially social media algorithms. But they’re here, and won’t be going away.

Oyster shells, in my witchcraft? It’s more likely than you think.
So, I’ve read a couple places that oyster shells are used for for banishment, good fortune, lunar magic, etc, and while I don’t disagree with those associations, I do find them lacking for a lot of reasons.
(I’ve also seen people associate oysters with the roman goddess Venus, but everyone seems to think she should be associated with a different shell so whatever)
So for starters, there’s more than one type of oyster. Actually, there are a bunch of species whose common name has “oyster” in it, and pretty much all they have in common is that they’re bivalve molluscs, which is still super broad.
There’s two main types: true oysters (family Ostreidae) and pearl oysters (family Pteriidae). These two families aren’t closely related, and their members are very different both biologically and magically. There’s also a bunch of misc species (humans are garbage at consistent naming tbh), but that’s for another time.
True oysters include the edible ones, such as eastern oysters and pacific oysters. Pearl oysters, as their name implies, are known for producing valuable pearls (although most molluscs that have shells can make pearls, they’re usually not as nice)
(Pearl oyster on left, true oyster on right. images from wikimedia commons x x)
The main reason I think those associations are lacking, then, is because they all derive from the creation of the pearl. Banishment comes from the reason pearls are formed: to coat an irritant, such as a sand granule, so that it doesn’t bother the oyster. Good fortune comes from the pearl, too, because it’s really lucky to open an oyster and find a pearl inside. And since pearls are associated with the moon, oysters are associated with lunar magic.
So when witches talk about the magical uses for oysters, what they’re usually talking about are pearl oysters. But if you go to the beach, at least where I live, a lot of the shells you find are going to be true oysters. Since I’m on the east American coast, I mostly find eastern oysters. Depending on where I go I might find oyster beds or even reefs of live ones, or see them on jetties and piers. They’re everywhere.

My uses for the eastern oysters are different from what reference materials are going to tell me. In particular, I use them for purification and protection, but I would use them for curses, too.
Beyond intuition, my reasoning for these correspondences come from my experiences with oysters and their place in the environment:
Purification: they filter water and clean out pollutants, algae, and sediment, so they’re especially good for purification that just kinda filters shit out as you go
(1½ hrs difference. images from saltmarshguide.org x)
Protection: oyster beds protect and house lots of other creatures. plus have you ever seen an oyster bed? touched one? so sharp. i have scars on my feet from stepping on shells hidden in the mud. their protection is more aggressive, like “stay back or i’ll stab you” because they will stab you.
Curses: this actually comes from the other two. since they filter water, oysters can be full of pollutants and can make people sick if harvested from bad areas. plus they’re so stabby. i would mostly use them to retaliate against an invader. like any kind of “you’re unwelcome, and you’re gonna regret coming here, to my house, and walking all over me” type of thing
I want to point out, though, that shells from the beach and shells from near the beds are way different! The ones that wash up on the beach are really rounded out, which I find makes them gentler (I have one in my car on a string with a moon snail shell and a tiger’s eye) and better for less agressive protection magic.
(soft vs stabby)
So! Try to figure out what kind of shells you have! Don’t rely on the lists other people give you, they’re often incomplete! Actually think about the type of protection, the type of attraction, etc because the protection offered by one crystal, herb, or shell is gonna be different from another! Look at the other correspondences too! Connect the dots! Use your intuition and experiences! I went off on a tangent here, but the point is to be your own resource, and also that I fucking love oysters.

Spell Jar to Muffle Annoying Sounds
In a jar, add:
star anise, that you not be deafened to magical sounds
tarragon, that you not be deafened to signs or warnings of crime
sage, that you not be deafened to important information
In a coffee filter, add:
cotton balls, to muffle
candlewax, to plug your ears
white salt, to cleanse
baking soda, to “deodorize”
a drop of snow water, for the silencing white noise of snowfall
Tie the filter shut with a thread, preferably in a color that brings you peace.
Add the filter to the jar. Top it with a sprinkle of black salt for general binding and protection.
Seal the jar with a black candle for binding, or another color candle for peace. Alternatively, tie a ribbon or thread around it.
Annoying non-essential sounds caught in the filter will be muffled. Magical/pleasant or otherwise important sounds will be unaffected.
Place the jar close to the source of the most annoying sounds.

Sigil and/or Bind Rune Exchange Game!
Here's how it works:
Anyone who self identifies as a witch/warlock/wizard/mage/etc. and makes their own sigils and/or bind runes can participate in this exchange!
Please do not use Sigil Engine or similar apps/websites to make your sigils for this! We want you to create your own sigils for your new friend!
You can make new sigils or share old ones you've made in the past that you are comfortable showing others for them to use.
Fill out the provided form linked below before May 9th.
You will be provided with a way to contact whoever you are matched with after May 12th (your match will also have your contact) and it's then up to you to reach out to each other and discuss your trade. To keep everyone safe we are only using tumblr messaging for contacting each other! Please do not provide any other contact information for your own safety!
Please keep your sigils and/or bind runes appropriate! This is meant to be a fun friendly PG experience for witches to make connections within their community. If you are met with hostility or inappropriate behavior please report and block that individual and reach out to @witcheshowl if you'd still like to participate in the exchange with someone else.
You can only submit this form once so please think over your answers carefully!
If you'd like to participate in the Sigil Exchange Game with other witches then you've found the right place! If you haven't gotten a match
Please reblog this if you can! The more people that see this and participate, the more connections everyone can make within our little community!
