Earlier this month, Dustin Lovelis released his new single, “Tara the Android.”

The old school drum fills and lilting waltz groove has the feel of a slow dance at a retro prom. Meanwhile, the lyrics, psychedelic guitar effects, and eerie vocal stacks pull away from that nostalgia and into a dark futuristic fantasy. 

Lovelis successfully straddles these two feels, sending listeners on a  journey that’s almost reminiscent of a short rock opera. The lyrics are relatable and delve into the struggle of balancing one’s perception of reality with reality itself:

“Tara was an android/ But she’ll always be real to me”

This hook puts complicated feelings of distrust into simple, singable terms. 

At the end of the song, one can’t help but wish there was more to the story. Maybe when Dustin Lovelis releases the rest of In Your Chamber next month, listeners can dive even further into the futuristic world.
