my brain, stomping itâs feet: i wanna use one inconsequential negative experience to spiral into an echo-chamber of self hatred!!!
me, stirring my tea with my little plastic knife: no, we donât do that anymore
Seriously no time for jokes about people in Texas suffering today.
@germanova
Iâm truly very sorry that happened đ
But Texans arenât just âsnowed in.â There is a very specific thing happening with our state specific energy grid.
Basically, Texas has its own grid to avoid dealing with â you guessed it â the feds. But grid independence has been violated a few times ove
Millions of people have been without ANY ELECTRICITY OR HEAT for 40 hours in places that have been -5 to 20 degrees. Water pipes and main are breaking everywhere so that many people donât water either.
This didnât just âhappenâ
We are suffering under corrupt and inept leadership who MADE this happen.
The widespread power failures in Texas in the face of a winter cold snap shine a light on what some see as the derelict state of Americaâs e

Your condition might be chronic, but you will become better at managing it. It won't be this hard forever. The symptoms may not change much, but you'll learn to cope better and more effectively and you'll find ways around them.

I donât think able bodied people realize how lucky they are to live in a world surrounded by people they can relate to. They can talk to friends and family that have likely gone through similar things and actually get help. When I have a problem I donât even go to other people anymore because I know they will 1) misunderstand me and 2) I will have to spend a ton of time and energy explaining myself- only to have them give advice that is way off base.
Iâm getting real tired of the ableds in my immediate circle proclaiming that the lockdown measures are a form of debilitating inhuman torture and makes life not worth living.
And yeah, this sucks. All of this sucks and is vastly damaging to peopleâs physical and mental health. Weâre enduring a global trauma, the ramifications of which will likely be felt for decades.
But when it was just my daily life being housebound due to my disabilities, it was a-okay for you to abandon me to this life while using phrases like, âmust be niceâ and âsounds rough,â all said smilingly under the sneering veneer of implied laziness and choice.
So which is it? A fate worse than death youâd never willing choose, or a cake walk? Which is it? *flips table*
I see (and agree with) your âyouâre one bad month away from becoming homeless (so start redirecting your loyalty from billionaires to the working class)â and I raise you a âyouâre one accident, one insect sting, one sudden mysterious illness, one virus from becoming permanently disabled (so start redirecting your sympathy from the able-bodied class to the disabled)â.
Itâs nearly impossible for a person to reach old age and not be at least mildly disabled. Start caring about disability rights NOW.

in all seriousness it's very alienating knowing theres Something Wrong With You. like seeing your mental illness come through in your behaviour and thought processes and knowing it's irrational and unhealthy, knowing other people are reading you as weird or stupid, and not being able to do anything about it is such a lonely experience
these people get it
What really fucks me up about a 40 hour work week and Iâve tried to explain to people over and over is that like of you do the math you have maybe 3 hours every day to just like. Rest and be with your family. And thatâs kind of it
Like the average adult needs about 8 hours of sleep every night, so that cuts your 24 hours to 16 right off the bat.
Youâre working for 8 hours, so 8 left.
But you actually work 8 to 5 at most offices, not 9 to 5, and that lunch is basically just long enough to retrieve food and eat. 7.
It took you 20 minutes to shower this morning, 10 to get dressed, and 45 to make a bowl of oatmeal and eat it. Weâll say 15 to get your stuff together and out to your car. 5 and a half.
You get home and have to cook dinner, 30 minutes min for that, probably more like an hour, so somewhere between 5 and 4.5 hrs left. And then youâve got to eat it, 30 minutes if youâre being healthy about it.
So at best youâve MAYBE got 4/4.5 hours left every week day and thatâs assuming you ran exactly zero errands, didnât stop by the gym after work, didnât have to stay late, have a wicked fast transition time between tasks AND a commute of like 5 minutes by car. If you have to go to the store after a quick run at the gym, pick your kids up from soccer across town, and you factor in a 30 minute commute both ways, youâve got enough free time for like one episode of show Monday through Friday. And weekends have got to be for cleaning the house and going to visit your mom for a few hours.
When do you write, or paint, or read or sew or go on hikes? When do you go on spur of the moment adventures with your wife and try to perfect your grandmaâs soda bread? What happens when it rains on Saturday after being sunny all the rest of the week so you canât go to the zoo that day and you donât have enough money for the museum? Why are we all just content to postpone our whole lives, put off âhappyâ and âhealthyâ for a miniscule amount of extra value weâre producing for someone else?
And itâs also a thing that fascinates me about hustle culture like. When do y'all rest? When do sleep and food happen? How do you make 3 different jobs work without dying?
Idk idk like I said Iâm real fucked up about it. It amazes me that more office workers arenât great big socialists because we have this miserable job where weâre monitored constantly and just have to sit. Still. And maintain focus on ONE THING for EIGHT HOURS in a BORING GRAY ROOM with exactly two short breaks at designated times and I just?? How does that not suck for literally everyone else?? You said yourself, Angie, youâre useless after 3 pm so just?? Organize with me and negotiate for shorter days??? Like youâre literally already only producing 6 hours of value, you donât need to be sitting there for longer than that.
One of the traits of allism that is most difficult to live with, as a family member of a person with allism, is their âstereotyped behaviorâ: meaningless, repetitive rituals that they not only insist on completing themselves but try to force others to engage in, as well.
Their obsessive need not only to perform these ritualistic behaviors themselves but for everyone around them to perform them as well can be a huge burden on family members.
For example, people with allism often have extremely complex compulsions surrounding eating, with which they will attempt to force everyone at the table to comply. These may include such unusual and varied behaviors as only cutting one bite of food at once (vastly increasing the amount of time it takes to feed a meal to a person with allism), only using silverware in incredibly specific and often uncomfortable or time-consuming ways, resting a piece of fabric or paper on the lap at all times whether it performs a function or not, and arranging all items at the table in a particular configuration.
A particularly common food-related obsession is a superstitious belief that some sort of harm will occur if people touch the eating table (for instance, if someone becomes tired and rests their arms on it). This inexplicable superstition is so common that those in the allistic community have even made up childish rhymes about it, such as âMabel, Mabel, strong and able, keep your elbows off the tableâ.
When others do not conform to the complex and often highly inconvenient demands required by the obsessions of the person with allism, the person with allism can become extremely upset, resulting in a variety of negative behaviors. They often become aggressive, sometimes even dangerous.
While the stereotyped behaviors of people with allism can be very difficult and disturbing to manage, itâs important to understand that the meaningless behaviors donât feel meaningless to them. For whatever reason, they appear to find these rituals soothing, which is why they become so distressed when others do not follow them. Remember, people with allism are not capable of healthy self-soothing techniques, like stimming, and therefore may resort to problem behaviors to cope.
With understanding, compassion, and unending patience, we can find a way to live happy lives with our loved ones on the allistic spectrum.
