The new Odyssey movie by Nolan in how it’s handling it’s theatrical run and cinematography seems like one of the most damaging artistic choices someone could make for a movie

Wdym the true dimensions of the film and the top and bottom half of the movie is shaved off for anyone going to a normal theater and you have to go to a IMAX theater that’s usually more expensive to see how it was actually filmed and how it was meant to be seen

Firstly this is un-debatably classist choice and is yet another way watching movies at the cinemas becoming more and more inaccessible, but also it’s just feels like a really stupid creative decision

The film medium is so strongly visual, whereas in a book, tone and mood is acquired from the author’s writing style and syntax: films are heavily dependent on their visuals, the composition of each shot, what’s focused and what’s blurred, what props and set pieces appear on screen, what actors and objects are emphasized, etc etc all serve a purpose to visually convey themes and ideas about characters and the story and having the ratio of the screen change and cutting out parts of the movie just completely ruins that, it’s changed what viewers will focus on, what objects and props they will see, it’ll manipulate how they read certain characters in certain events that happen, and overall just makes a muddy , boring movie lacking scenes with visual subtext

It’s just so baffling bc I feel like half of the fun of watching a movie or a show is being immersed into shows through its visuals, so I don’t understand why they would sacrifice something like that for majority of the auidence

Something about how Eva Stratt saved Ryland Grace in the exact same moment she attempted to murder him. Something about how she knew with perfect clarity the sufferings that would wash over the world and them both if the Project didn't succeed. Something about how she looked at this sweet, good-hearted, goofy, pathetic fucking coward of a schoolteacher, waxing some poetic nonsense about how he didn't want to leave his students, and knew he could never live with himself if he had to watch those children, the same children he careened into a parking lot and demanded she hand over her astrophage for, starve to death under a darkening sky. Something about how she'd never be able to live with herself for torturing him like that. Something about Eva Stratt saving Ryland Grace from himself, so that he could save them all.
