Day 49 — Victorian Pride Centre

The Victorian Pride Centre in St Kilda is a striking example of contemporary architecture. Designed by Brearley Architects & Urbanists (BAU) and Grant Amon Architects, the five-storey centre is Australia’s first purpose-built LGBTIQIA+ community hub.

The centre’s bold, curved facade stands out along Fitzroy Street, featuring an undulating design that reflects themes of openness and fluidity. The exterior is clad in white concrete and perforated metal panels, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.

A defining feature of the building is its series of large circular and arched openings, which frame views both inside and out. The atrium is a key focal point, with a soaring void that allows light to flood the interior spaces.

Open, flexible spaces accommodate community organisations, meeting rooms, and event spaces. The Pride Centre houses LGBTIQIA+ organisations, a library, gallery spaces, bar, gay bookstore (Hares & Hyenas), and event areas. Its design fosters social interaction and celebrates the diversity of Victoria’s queer community.
